‘Two-for-one’ says Jones, as he pairs himself — again — with Obama
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Despite what Joe Lowery may say, DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones hasn’t given up on selling himself and Barack Obama as a pair in Tuesday’s Democratic run-off for the U.S. Senate race.
In what looks like to be Jones’ final mailer to voters, there’s no funny stuff with photos. But Jones does put himself in a line of African-American senators that include Edward Brooke, Carol Moseley Braun and — of course — Obama.
“Let’s make it a 2-for-1!” shouts the latest Jones mailer, with a check by his name and the fellow from Chicago.
Click here for a larger version of the Jones flyer.
Jones’ rival, Atlanta attorney Jim Martin, is attempting to put out the contrary message — that Jones’ presence on the ballot would harm Obama in November.
But the Insider has caught hold of none of Martin’s literature. If you have anything, send it in.

I LOVE THE MAILER IT IS BRILLIANT AND I APPLLAUD HIM FOR MAKING EVERYONE AWARE THAT THERE HAS ONLY BEEN THREE! UNITED STATES SENATORS THAT HAVE BEEN AFRICAN AMERICAN. THAT SHOULD BE THE STORY, NOT THAT OBAMA IS ON THERE. IF MR JONES IS NOT ELECTED AFRICAN AMERICANS WILL HAVE NO REPRESENTATIN IN THE SENATE AT ALL. IT IS ALREADY CRAZY THAT WE ONLY HAVE ONE AFRICAN AMERICAN IN SENATOR OBAMA. HE IS THE MOST QUALIFIED AND WILL DEFINATELY BEAT THAT REPUBLICAN IN NOVEMBER.

VJALLTHEWAY’s post, above, is a perfect example of liberal/Democrat racism. Only blacks can represent blacks? Dr King said we should be judged by the color of our skin, but by the content of their character. I hope everyone stops to think about the institutional racism on the left. Black democrats need to wake up. I know I’m still black, but I am now a proud Republican. What has the Democrat party done for blacks? What have their programs done for us.

Comparing himself to Brooke (a republican) and Braun (a one-term scandal laced former senator) is quite possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. The other problem is that Vernon positions himself as the “black” candidate in this piece rather than a senator for all of Georgia. The piece in laughably flawed.

Just curious, do you actually vote? How can you pick a candidate on the basis of this mailer? You have obviously missed out on a couple facts: VJ voted for Bush twice AND donated serious money to the Republican party. Guess that wasn’t on the mailer. Keep reading here, you’ll learn a lot.

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH WANTED TO SEE SOMEONE THAT LOOKS LIKE YOU REPRESENT YOU. I BET IF THE SENATE WERE ALL BLACK YOU WOULD NOT BE SAYING THAT. WE WILL NEVER APOLOGIZE FOR WANTED OUR CHILDREN TO BE ABLE TO SEE US IN PROMINENT POSITIONS. YOU CAN CALL IT RACIST ALL YOU WANT. I WANT THE MOST QUALIFIED PERSON WHICH IS VERNON JONES AND THE FACT THAT HE IS AFRICAN AMERICAN IS ICING ON THE CAKE. WE MUST HAVE DIVERSITY IN AMERICA. WE CAN NO LONGER BE THREATENED WITH THE WORD RACISM TO DETER US FROM WANTING DIVERSITY.

Hey, Vernon has been saying “Let’s Make it a 2 for 1” for years. He usually says it at a bar or club to two ladies, but at least it’s not a new saying to him.

a picture is worth a thousand words but a thousand words cannot excuse nor justify the lack of racial/cultural diversity in one of the most powerful branches of american government.Maybe these pictures are subliminal reiminders of thaat shameful portion of american history that some people want to forget but not acknowledge so we can truly move forward

Being black is not a significant enough criteria to be elected to office. Vernon Jones is Saxby Chambliss with a tan. Race is just one of his many tricks for obtaining and holding onto power and it’s not going to work this time. His attempts to link himself to Obama are laughable. Jim Martin is the man we need.
And VJALLTHEWAY … how about punching the ‘CapsLock’ button, friend-o? We’re tired of your idiotic screaming …

TWO FOR ONE — I DON’T THINK SO. VJ is making another grab for Sen. Obama’s coattails after Obama let him know in no uncertain terms the first time that he was not welcome. I do not recall that Sen. Obama ever voted Republican, VJ did. I don’t think Obama needs this Republican wanna be and I don’t the State of Georgia needs him or wants him either. VJ - Go away.

If you support most of Barack Obama’s stands on the issues there is no way you could honestly agree with Vernon on the issues. Vernon Jones has more in common with George W. Bush than Obama. I guess that’s why he proudly voted for Bush twice. Jim Martin may be a white guy, but he has far more in common with Barack Obama than Vernon Jones. Barack Obama hates Vernon Jones. He made fun of Vernon for voting for Bush twice and he condemned the last mailer he sent that showed them together. If Vernon slimes his way on the ballot Obama will not go near him on the campaign trail and that will really hurt the Democratic Party in Georgia. People we have a real chance at winning this thing in Georgia. It might not be highly probably, but we have a punchers chance. If you vote for Vernon Jones just know you’re voting against Barack Obama.

rev. lowery supported republican guy milner for governor. hosea williams supported ronald reagan over jimmy carter. vernon jones has personally fed many hungry people at the feed the hungry event for many years. where was jim martin? i noted that in lowery’s endorsement he could not think of any civil rights involvement by martin.was the preacher paid again? its not the party but who is best qualified. all jim martin can say is vernon jones voted for bush 8 years ago. so did a lot of democrats thats how he got elected. are we to vote against competence and a proven record of govt experience and go with the likeable incompetent guy who opposes the death penalty and lavished lots of tax money on brian nichols? thats how we got messed up in this country …we were influenced to vote for bush because he was likeable. by the way i hear sen. chuck hagel who is a republican and voted for bush is on obama’s short list for vp…so obama does welcome those who voted for bush 4 years ago.. thats better than the guys like jim who voted against obama this year. i like an independent voter like jones who voted for clinton, bush, and obama

My vote for Mr. Jones is based on fact not matter of opinion or race. The fact is Mr. Jones has the qualifications to take to Washington the heart and issues of Georgians. Many people have judged this man based on personal views and not his record. I am a long time resident of Dekalb County and can walk out of my front door and SEE the positive changes he has made in Dekalb County. A lot of times we get so caught up in personalities and likeability and not in who can get the job done. Most people against Mr. Jones only know that he voted for Bush. No, I didn’t agree with his vote but I can’t argue against his record. Neither myself nor the AJC or any other news media has been able to do that. By him putting his face on a flyer with other respectable African Americans is no different than me putting pictures of people whom I admire on my myspace page. It is funny to me how we can pay so much attention to minor details and miss the real issues which are people are out of work, gas is high as hell, and its getting harder everyday for the average person to put food on the table. The fact is there haven’t been layoffs in the Dekalb County Gov’t, Mr. Jones isn’t begging for money for the county, and Dekalb is a great place to live, in fact one of the fastest growing counties in the state.

dman,
Vernon Jones will under perform Barack Obama by 15%. The fact is a lot of Democrats won’t vote for Jones under any circumstances. I would rather have Saxby in office than have a slime bag like Vernon Jones as the highest ranking Democrat in Georgia. Vernon Jones is nothing more than a political opportunist who has given money to the GOP, voted for Bush twice and he endorsed Congressman Lynn Westmoreland in the 2006 Republican primary. Westmoreland went on to sponsor legislation to repeal the voting rights act and he praised Blackwater during a congressional hearing.
Vernon Jones claims that as a conservative Democrat he can bring back a lot of conservatives back into the Democratic fold. Give me a break. Saxby will have a feild day with Vernon Jones. There is no way that Vernon Jones would be able to win over rural social conservatives in the way Sam Nunn did. VJ claims he’ll be like Sam Nunn, but that’s insulting to Sam Nunn.
VJ has the sleaze of Bill Clinton with none of the charm and all of the zig-zagnis of Zell Miller. VJ can’t win the voters he claims he can and will cause large swaths of Democrats to either vote for the libertarian, leave the ballot blank or vote for Saxby
Jim Martin is really the only legitimate choice in this race.

Get Real,
It’s funny you mentioned the names of Bill Clinton and Zell Miller and not even address there proven accomplishments for not just the country but the state as well. Jim Martin has a one liner “Jones voted for Bush.” That is so old now. He has know chance in hell against Saxby. At least we know Vernon will put up a real fight against Saxby and WIN. Jim has to get a backbone first.

I just hope that instead of focusing on rumors and rhetoric everyone will take the time to take a look at the issues in an unbiased manner and choose the best candidate because honestly when you look at both parties they have done their fair share to damage the ultimate race, THE HUMAN RACE. Let’s all get out the vote on Aug. 5th

“Racism will never be used as a tool to keep us from seeking diversity ever again”
Funny, I feel the same way.
Racism will never prevent me from saying a candidate is a slime bucket again.
I don’t care if he is Black. That won’t stop me from saying that Vernon Jones is a jerk and I won’t vote for him.
And I am an Obama supporter. Because despite the FISA capitulation bill, he is a much better supporter of MY rights and MY interests than John “Anything for a buck” McCain.
Oh and VSquad, did you know that nothing on the internet is anonymous? Even if you gave a false email, they can still find out who you are, where you live and what you had for breakfast?
I’m just saying.

Once again everybody want to avoid the fact that Vernon Jones has brought change to Dekalb count he and his administration have brought more libraries, sidewalks a new senior center, performing arts center, parks, job opprotunity, bike trails, wider roads…and it seems that all you guys can say to conbact his impecable record is he voted for bush twice and he was acused of rape but never charged. Nevermind the fact that he is more qualified then jim martin, and that jim has been in government for 20 years and nobody even knows who he is or what he has done.

Libraries but not enough money to pay to staff them.
And voting for Bush in 2004 is….
A failure in judgment.
And as for his stellar performing record, it took TEN DAYS to get my water turned on.
Mr. Jones can’t run a county much less a country.

Amosely, do you have children? Do you support your children? Does your employer provide you with family health insurance coverage so you can take them to the doctor when they’re sick? Lots of blue-collar and self-employed working Georgians don’t have employer-sponsored family health insurance. Many of these people DO, however, have the option of signing up for Peach Care: affordable children’s health insurance for working families.
Thank Jim Martin for that! Thank the Republicans that VJ supports for making sure it’s not big enough to cover ALL the people of Georgia who need it.
Hope you don’t let YOUR little kid scream all night with a ruptured ear drum because you’re too lazy or selfish to spend ten hours hanging out in an emergency room for something that could have been treated days ago at a doctor’s office!

Hey amosley, DeKalb County has actually lost jobs since Vernon took office, by a few thousand. And the 311 system is a complete failure. He wasn’t falsely accused of rape: The accuser withdrew the charges after being hassled by Vernon’s lawyer and former police chief Lou Graham.
Anyone who lives in DeKalb knows what a miserable, divisive CEO Vernon Jones has been. Four police chiefs in five years, along with constant meddling in the police dept. Bond issue after bond issue. Two federal racism lawsuits. The list goes on and on. If you live in DeKalb, you know how much of a failure Jones is as an elected official and as a person.

I Have lived in Dekalb County(lithonia) for 12 years and I can say that I hve seen the changes in my area of South Dekalb compared to North Dekalb who already had sidewalks, libraries, pothole free streets, a state of the art senior center, two adequate shopping malls, and marta assebility. The CEO when i moved here was some one by the name of Levitan who did nothing for My COMMUNITY!and to be quite honest with you if u think dekalb is bad with vernon if ellis wins it will get worse, but you dont realize what u have untill its gone. Once Vernon wins this election again on tuesday after being the leading canidate by 6 percentage point on July 15th, I hope all of you who are quick to talk bad about him use the same intensity to apologize to him and support him in november!!!!!!!

Neither one of them look like the senators or presidents we have had in the past. They do have that in common. (I admit I stole the sentiment from Obama “The Chonsen One” himself.)
