Last week, just before the Fourth of July, former Georgia senator Sam Nunn appeared with former secretary of state Colin Powell at the Aspen Ideas Festival in Colorado.
In a videotaped forum, the pair talked of many things — Iraq, Iran, and China.
Nunn was asked about the possibility that he might be asked to serve as a Democratic running mate with Barack Obama. Powell was asked whether he’d endorse Obama — or Republican presidential candidate John McCain.
But one detailed exchange, largely overlooked, concerned the issue of gays in the military.
Both Powell and Nunn were pivotal figures in the 1993 adoption of the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
Last month, Nunn said the policy, which requires homosexuals to keep their sexual preferences under wraps, was ripe for review. In Aspen, Nunn predicted the policy’s ultimate end.
Nunn said:
“If you’re going to have open service by gays and lesbians — and I think we will eventually have that, the question’s timing. But if you’re going to have that, you have to have a very carefully calibrated set of rules.
“I think it’s appropriate to review it now. We certainly are having a lot of people who are getting out because of it. But on the other hand, there are an awful lot of people that may be affected the other way.
Powell would not go so far as Nunn, but admitted that “the country has changed enormously in 15 years.”

While it might eventually happen, it’s not a good idea. It will only make recruitment harder and retention more difficult. While you might pick up a few openly gay people willing to serve, you would lose unit cohesion particularly in the enlisted ranks in forward serving units.

The only problem with the gay people in our unit was fear that they’d be hunted down by homophobic nuts higher up the chain of command, and we’d lose some good soldiers. All of us sharing tents, rooms, and showers had no problem, but then maybe we just knew how to act like grownups.

Do some research, trash. There are, and have been many, MANY honorable gay men and women serving in the US Military for many years, and yes- as someone pointed out, there are many other countries who allow gay men and women to serve openly without detriment.

It’s about time. They should treat this just like racial integration. Anybody in the chain of command dicking around (no pun intended) with gay troops would be dealt with severely. The Army could make this work.
Most soldiers my age and younger don’t give a s** about sexual orientation. Heck, I wish I could’ve had a gay squad mate that had a crush on me—I bet he’d have REALLY covered my six (once again, no pun intended ;) )
But that’s another issue—gays who choose to openly serve will have to have a good sense of humor and tough skin. The Army helps EVERYBODY learn that though.
Nunn is a good man. And Powell is still one of my heroes—I can forgive his involvement in this administration.

Oh yeah, for Jeff—the morality imposed on officers is a CONSTITUTIONAL morality imposed by equal protection guaranteed under law, not a religious morality. I’m sure that if the current policy was challenged, even this right leaning SCOTUS (which has been unbelievably wise) would have to strike it down.
The best officers I know have the United States of America and the U.S. Army for their religion, and their scriptures are the Constitution—and of course the 7-8 ;)

Jeff You are fooling yourself if you think that gay and straight people are not already showering together in the military and at the gym. For the most part they don’t care. They are secure enough in there own sexuality.

Gays should be allowed to serve in the Military. Hey VETERAN WAKE UP. I’m a former veteran and I served during Vietnam war right along with fellow gays and everyone one new who was gay and who wasn’t and nobody gave a s**, we ate together, we took shower together, slep in the same tent, and a lot of them died protecting our stright troops so I say to the VETERAN and everyone else who hate gays wake up this is not the past and start living in the present. Even today people serving in the Military know who is gay and who isn’t and they don’t give a s**. During this hard time that we are going thru we need everyone that the Military can get to help protect our country. Gays are being treated like blacks were treated many years ago when blacks were treated like s** because it was alright for blacks to serve in the military die for their country but were told to stay on your side of the room. Come on people this is the present not the past. Everybody that is an American, and pay taxes should be allowed to fight for our kids future and the honor of being an American. I feel sorry for all the dumb a* people who hate Gays. Read the paper it is not gay people raping female in the military or killing them. Oh buy the way to the guy who is afraid that a gay person may be checking you out in the shower as if you never looked around at someone “get real” every guy sometime in his life time either in Grade school, High school, College or even at the gym, has looked at other guys it is only natural and it doesn’t mean anything. Today sexual orientation in the Military really doesn’t mean a whole lot to many soldier because they all signed up to do a job and that job is to protect our Country. Like the person said earlier GAYs have been serving in the Military for many years and they will serve in the Military for many years to come. Time to move into the future and let anyone that wants to serve in the Military serve and not be ashamed of who you are and what you stand for. Be GAY and be proud.

I am in the military and believe that it is first morally wrong to be gay, read your Bible. I would not want to share a tent, shower, fox hole, or anything else with a person that believes that being gay is the way of life. It is bad enough I defend this country for bigots, child molesters, criminals, atheists, and many others, just so you would have the freedom to “Do As You Please”. Leave the sanctity of the way the military has been forever and let me do my job without the worry of who I am sharing my tent with. I am not against rights, but the rights you have, were given to you from the blood of the American Military Solder, Airman, Seamen, and Marine. You may have something to prove, well prove it somewhere else. It’s bad enough when you don’t know who your enemy is and then you have to fight them. In the Military Now you have got to be kidding! If you find it offensive to be fighting for this country when it includes child molesters, criminals, athiest, you need to get out of the military! Either you fight for this country or you don’t!! I hate to tell you this but you are right now serving with gays, child molesters, and criminals! You shower with them, you sleep in the same tent and you eat with them. Grow up! My son, you has served two times in Iraq spoke it best - “I served with a lesbian and much rather have her watching my back than alot of other soldiers because she did her job well.” Something tells me in the military now is one of those my son wouldn’t trust to watch his back. The only thing “sacred” about the military is their adherence to the Constitution, which guarantees equal treatment for all citizens. If you have a problem serving alongside a gay soldier, it’s just that—YOUR problem, not anybody else’s.

Mr. Veteran, how is allowing gay people the right to serve giving them special treatment? If those within that population enjoy the benefits of living in this nation, they should be allowed to fight for it. Why should one population be exempt for serving their country? Are you in favor of felons be allowed to serve and fight? I guess that’s okay because all felons are straight. Right? Huh? Excuse me! You need to learn the difference between condoning homosexuality and being fair to homosexuals. By the way, do you have a Bible? If so, do you read it? I never saw anyone prancing around on the confidence course. It was usualy female soldiers that wanted to stand at parade pretty. Interesting theory though.
Oh, you can’t have HIV or AIDS and serve in the military. I don’t know about you, but it was mandatory for us to have regular up to date check ups and AID’s tests. But thats just a part of remaining deployable and healthy. Besides, I remember most of the straight people sharing the Syph, clap, and hepititsgonitchyapes with each other.
If you think you are not already sharing a tent, humvee, or eating in the defac with a gay person, you are mistaken.

As far as serving with gays, child molesters, and criminals, I have seen them in my 20 plus years of service and they have either been kicked out of the service or in jail for being a criminal. I have been to war and am very proud of what I did and I never had anyone to second guess if I had their back. I have celebrated, cried, lost, and made some of then my best friends and know this, if I ever need anything I could call them and they would run to help a brotherhood that has stood the test of time.

I am an Iraqi war vet, and I would not have or ever wanted to serve with some homo. What about the rights of we straight folks that serve or have served? Seventy-three percent of US military members would accept openly gay and lesbian service members being in their units, according to a new poll released by Zogby International and the Michael D. Palm Center. Over one in five respondents to the survey said they know for certain that someone in their unit is gay or lesbian.
Another poll by Gallup says that 79% of the American public now support the right for gays to openly serve in the military. 49% of Republicans also favor overturning the current Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy and are in favor of gays serving openly.

Niney-three percent of US military would not accept Chickenhawk service members being in their units, according to a new poll released by Zogby International. Over one in five respondents to the survey said they know for certain that if someone in their unit is as cowardly as JohnnyReb they would beat the cr@p out of them. They said the cowards would bring down moral and they would end up dead because a chickenhawk might mistake them for the enemy while in a hysterical panic.

That he didn’t require an insurance card before healing, yell “get a job!” before dispensing a loaf of bread, or mandate a campaign donation in exchange for forgiveness (looking the other way?)
