Obama visit confirmed
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will be in Atlanta on July 7 raising money, his campaign confirmed Saturday.
It will be Obama’s first visit to the state since securing the nomination earlier this month. It is the first visit to the state by either Obama or John McCain since March, when McCain visited shortly after wrapping up the GOP nomination.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution obtained a copy of the invitation to the long-rumored Obama event. A trip here by Obama has been the topic of much speculation for several weeks but the campaign had until Saturday not been willing to confirm details.
According to the invitation, the event will begins at 6 p.m. at 103 West, on West Paces Ferry Road in Atlanta. Tickets ain’t cheap: $2,300 per person for the general reception and $10,000 for a VIP reception and photo line.
You can see the invitation after the jump.
Co-chairs for the event, according to the invitation, are: Pinney Allen and Buddy Miller, Donna and Michael Coles, Barb and Kirk Dornbush, Norrene and Eugene Duffy, Daniel Halpern, Steve Leeds, Karol Mason, Marianne Spraggins and Chris Womack, and co-hosts are Cathy Hampton, Michelle and Kenneth Taylor and Rodney Strong.
The event itself is a joint fund raiser for Obama’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee. The first $2,300 of any contribution will go to Obama’s primary campaign account, which must fund his campaign until the convention in late August. The next $2,300 from the same individual will go to his general election account and up to an additional $28,500 will go to the DNC.

They should set up a “dunk” booth (circus style). I would pay $2300 to throw a softball to see him dunked. Vote for Barr!! All I hear is how Obama is going to change things, but he won’t tell us how. Listen to Barr’s speech….at least he has a plan.

Todd, if the price sounds steep to you, look at it this way. You just haven’t been hearing much talk about Dem fund raising and the big buck fund raisers in Ga have been Repugnican for a lot of years. Dems raising this kind of money in Ga is healthy sign of good things to come. What did you call Repugnicans who handed the same kind of money to W and his henchman, Repugnican elitist conservatives?
Truth is, running for President is expensive.
Randy, just cause you can see him in Carrollton free, does not mean you ought to do that. To elect a Dem money needs to be collected at every whistle stop whether or not its black tie or blue jean. Put your money where your interests lie, in change for the country and Carrollton.

For you local yokels who know nothing about politics (see GA political leadership), such a fundraiser is the norm. The cost is only an issue because its Senator Obama. He doesn’t get special pricing for fuel, campaign literature, TV time etc. The only difference is that he has energized people like me who never contributed to a campaign. My wife and I will be giving our $2300. I wish I had the $10K.

Oh good grief - you can’t run a campaign on $50 a head. A Porsche can cost upwards of $80,000 doesn’t mean you have to get it. You can learn what you need to know about Obama’s political platform by reading on the internet.

It’s a fundraiser!!! You are paying $2,300 to raise funds, not to just see Obama. If you do not want to donate the total amount allowed under law, don’t go to the event. Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians all have fundraisers to raise funds! DUH!!!!!

Grow up please, to the bumpkins who obviously don’t understand how politics work. This is why I seldom read the AJC. ALL presidential candidates hold these big, fancy, fund raiser dinners/events. This is how they fund their campaigns for travel costs and advertising across the country. They also fund the DNC so that they can pay for the convention in August. If you paid attention, you would know that the RNC is flush with money for their convention. The dems are playing catch-up! If you will remember, Obama held one of his first really large rallies last year at GA Tech. He attracted over 20,000 people who paid $0 to see him speak. Unfortunately, in this stage of the game, only those with very deep pockets will be able to attend this event. But I sincerely hope he attracts lots of bigwigs so that he can collect so much money that he will blow McCain out of the water! GO OBAMA ‘08!!!

Betty Boop thinks that Obama is turning into what he said he wasn’t. I have rethought the idea that this kind of fundraising is healthy. After some more thought, I feel that this sort of event sends the wrong message. What is the difference between Obama and McCain with this sort of event. We have spent years berating the Republicans for this kind of largess.

There are folks in Atlanta that will gladly pay this to support the Democratic party and Obamas candidacy. If you are one of those that dont have it, its ok…….just because its the democratic party doesnt mean it should be a discount function. Stop hating on the fact that this is the first candidate in a long time that people really want to hear what he has to say. Im sure Bush charged a lot more so his supporters could listen to him STRATEGERIZE……and you elected him twice for this level of brilliance

Please get over your “poverty” mentality. This is the norm for a campaign fundraiser. Trust me, McCain is having the same type of fundraiser. If you can’t afford to go, shut up and wait for the TV news stations to show you a glimpse of it on the 11 o’clock news. If you had any smarts about yourself, you would know that Obama has asked us average Americans for donations of $5, $10,$25. Some people can more than afford the $10,000.

If OB really wanted to make a smooth move, he should have his fund raising event on Sweet Auburn. Still could have charged the same amount—-but it would sent a hell of a different message than the message being sent by holding his event at 103 West in Buckhead.
I am white and I would feel more comfortable on Sweet Auburn than I would in fashionable Buckhead.

Great idea for raising funds which are so badly needed. I agree it would have been a smooth move to hold the event on Sweet Auburn Ave. I agree that “Buckhead” is not the safest place although the perception is that it is more safe.
Hope that the Democrats will catch up in raising funds. Thank goodness for the grass roots movement for Obama that allowed record-breaking funds to be raised during the Primary. Although, I cannot attend at this point, I will contribute my $1,000 to help the Democrats regain the Whitehouse and set our country back on the path to freedom and prosperity!
These are historic times and I am glad to be part of the action. I plan on going to Washington in ‘09 when Obama takes the Oath of Office. Yes We Can Make Change We Can Believe In!
My prayers are for our country as we seek to live up to our creed that all men are created equal. Our image as Americans has increased with the prospect of Obama becoming our next President.

Obama campaign is doing the same thing every other presidential canidate has done. He is raising funds for the campaign..just like any other person! So whats the big issue?
Like someone else said you are not paying to see him but paying to help FUNDRAISING! If you feel that is unreasonable thats fine and well but don’t knick his campaign…actually Obama has given some of his money to Clinton…but him raising funds is a bad thing? Ha…that is funny.
Its so sad that we have ignorant people in this world who are not able to be open minded about all situations…including electing an African-American as President…is he not “qualified” for the position like everyone else running?
The ignorant comments ( i.e. fried chicken and watermelon) are not needed.

According to other news sources Obama has raised over 100 million to date, compared to 41 million by McCain. Obama has also already spent more than double what McCain has raised. IMHO this does not show a wise use of funds by Obama. I expect a major tax increase if he plans to spend our tax dollars this way.
A side note, Obama recently made a quiet trip to Walter Reed to visit wounded veterans. He commented that they and their families have received substandard care under the Bush administration. Oddly enough, this is more under the control of Congress than the President. If this is such a problem, why haven’t the Democrats in Congress started working to fix things.

I probably will not vote for Obama unless something comes out of the woodworks on McCain, or between now and election time, Obama totally blows McCain away with truly creative and new ideas.
With that said, I think if the election were held today, Obama would win. That thought use to scare me because in the primary race, he came across as a wild-eyed radical to me. However, the more you get to know about the guy, he isn’t any different than the rest of the politicians in Washington. This fundraising event is a perfect example. Also forgoing the public campaign funds was another sign of just another pol. Look how he straddled the SCOTUS decision on firearm ownership. As we get closer to the election, he will be just like every other politician—-in big monies pocket. Bought and paid for.
But as I said, that makes me feel more comfortable with him as president because nothing will really change. When it comes to government and politicians—change is bad.

If Bob Barr was serious, he would have entered into the race much earlier. If he is that slow, then why would you vote for him in an election. Look at your personal financial situation under the Republican Party.

Why is this an issue? Everyone that has ever run for the office of the President of the United States has fund raisers. Let’s move on people!

Hey Mr. Dave, since you wouldn’t pay .10 cents to see Obama, you must be tickled pink to see trillions spent on the messes we’re in now.

All the whites who are open minded and have left the past of the 60’s and 70’s, etc., must really cringe when they see so many bigots still live among us in these United States, particularly in the South where the reputation for bigotry lives on - and to know that some of these bigots are neighbors and have children that socialize with their kids, must really be troublesome. Aren’t we glad the number is decreasing, slowly, but surely.

As always, for society to move forward we must wait for the hidebound conservatives to die off. Then the liberal position will become the “obvious truth,” and those who opposed it will be looked back on as… well, backward.
Just like with slavery, women’s right to vote, civil rights, and every other advance our society has made. The conservatives die out; the next generation doesn’t see what all the fuss was about. And America moves a little bit forward.

As always, for society to move forward, we must wait for the hidebound liberals to abort themselves into the history books. Then the conservative position will become the “obvious truth.” and those who opposed will have been aborted or too old to have kids.
The hippies are getting old, and today Obama’s speech sounded flatly conservative. I cannot imagine the heart break the liberals and their pals in the MSM must have felt when they heard Obama sounding just like a conservative. I guess that even Obama realizes that liberalism is unsaleable.

It is Bush’s fault that Democratic controlled congress keeps going along with funding his war and spying all the time on everybody. It is Bush’s fault that day after day no cases are being brought by ordinary citizens about spying. I hate Bush!!!!

soon Mccain $84m will not be as long as the reported $200m war chest that Obama will have and soon McCain will have to cede states like GA and it will take only one state like Georiga combined with the same states that Kerry won to hand Obama the election.
