In Savannah, the fallout from Obama’s choice of Barrow rather than Thomas
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In today’s Savannah Morning News, political columnist and reporter Larry Peterson has already picked up on some hard feelings generated by Barack Obama’s endorsement of U.S. Rep. John Barrow over his Democratic primary challenger, Regina Thomas.
Peterson notes that Barrow, a conservative Democrat, differs with the presumptive presidential nominee on heavy topics such as the war in Iraq and President Bush’s tax cuts.
But Peterson also mentions one of the vagaries of campaigning in the Democratic primary: Barrow, who is white and eager to do well among African-American voters, endorsed Obama early — in late February, just as the crucial contest for superdelegates began.
Thomas, who is black and presumably needed to cultivate an image as a crossover candidate who can attract white voters, didn’t endorse Obama until he’d very nearly locked up the nomination.
Wrote Peterson:
Mary Osborne, who was Obama’s Chatham County coordinator in Georgia’s Feb. 5 Democratic presidential primary, said she is disappointed.
Osborne, a Savannah alderman, said Obama might not be familiar with Barrow’s voting record.
Kevin Clark, another local Obama supporter and a leader in the gay rights community, said he was “sorely, sorely disappointed.”
Clark said Barrow failed to stand behind the pro-gay-rights positions he took in his 2004 Democratic primary campaign.
Osborne and others suggested the endorsement was a reward for Barrow’s support of Obama for president .
“I’m sure there’s a matter of trade-offs,” Osborne said. “That’s how things are done in politics.”

In politics LOYALTY is rewarded, just ask the Clintons. Many Black politicians did not show Obama love when he needed them the most and now that he is winning many want his attention. Why didn’t they stand by him when it counted? There is such of thing as “too little too late.”

Obama and his change…change…change…message will prove that he is not for change and that he is just another Washington politican and you’ll see him shift himself to be more and more in the center. he is reminding me of the early Clintons, his campaign is almost a carbon copy of the first term Clintons. McCain will do the same thing, he’ll be much more cneter than to the right. It’s politics and both men need a job so don’t be surprsied at anything you see at this point in the game.

Hey ed and crystal, if you ever get out of the house, you will notice that gas prices are over $4, houses are foreclosing at an alarming rate, jobs are going over seas, unemployment is rising and we are at war with over 4000 dead soldiers…so you want things to stay the same?? idiots!!

Gas is at 4 bucks because the liberals and environmentalist will not let us get our own oil. Not to mention the fact the the democratic party has stood in the way of new refineries and nuke plants for decades. This fuel crisis is rooted in the left. No amount of lying by liberal operatives will change that. The country is wising up to it as we speak. The demand for domestic drilling has never been greater. The rest of you post in the standard liberal crap that you guys have been putting out since 2004. Oh did you know that in 2006 Pelosi said that the democrat lead congress would fix the fuel price problem. Well done Nacny, well done.

Crystal you are obviously a republican, I am neither a republican nor democrat. I vote for the candidate who makes the best argument. I voted for Perdue as governor, Roy Barners didn’t present a good case. In 2000, I voted for Gore. In ‘04 presidential race, didn’t vote at all both were jokes.
so are you please with the republican leadership? bush has the lowest rating of any president.
are you better off today than you were 4 years ago?
if you are vote for mccain

Yep, amazing how the mantra for change went out the door even before the convention. Public funding, preconditions on preconditions, Jerusalem divided, etc. all in a growing list of things Obama has clearly not matched his rhetoric on. It’s amazing how all he’s done since clinching the nomination is hit McCain over and over and over as well. He’s managed to get his hands dirty and flop on various positions…so indicative of what he truly is. He is by far no agent of change. Coming from the home of the greatest embodiment of corrupt politics, young Barry is about as far from change in DC as one can get.

Yes I am better off, I work and do not depend on the government for my happiness. I was raised poor, by a single mom in family of entitlement democrats. Bush may have a low rating, but the President is not responsible for my ability to create wealth or good vibes. I have the power over my life and liberty, not the government. The government has never made me a dime. Obama will not impact my life one way or another. Neither will McCain. McCain is less liberal than Obama and for me that is a good thing. This blind hope you democrats and whatever you are, travis, is misplaced. Take it from me I am a recovering Democrat.

Even if the oil companies started drilling on the outer continental shelf today it would have minimum effect on current gas prices. How many of you actually believe the greedy oil companies would cut you any slack if they had more supply? It would take ten years to get any oil on the continental shelf and the environmental risks would be enormous. There is also conflicting opinions about how much oil is out there and on how much impact drilling would have on our prices. The funny thing about Bush and the GOP is that they’re quick to believe “select” scientists when it comes to oil and other fossil fuels deposits, but they often discount the overwhelming consensus in the scientific community about global warming and they want to teach our kids that the world is 6,000 years old and that early man and dinosaurs co-existed. Bush and the GOP trolls like Saxby are just carrying water for the oil companies and they could care less about consumers. We don’t have a supply problem. We have a consumption problem. With stricter fuel standards and better use of public transportation and carpools we can make progress while we transition away from oil. With China and India using more oil in the coming years that will negate any extra oil we drill unless consumption is reduced. We have to move away from oil. As long as oil is the main source of energy in the world international terrorists and other “unfriendly” groups and countries will have a cash cow. By moving away from oil we are “truly” fighting terrorism and creating a cleaner Earth for future generations. We can create new jobs in this country and export this new technology abroad. If we can put a man on the moon with the technology we had in the 1960’s we can move this country away from oil in the 21st century. If you like Al Qaeda, breathing unclear air and wasting time and money sitting in traffic keep doing the things the you always have. We have to change our behavior and move toward alternative forms of energy(not corn based ethanol)and transportaion.

crystal i have a few issues with your thesis…1st of all, how can you be better of now that you were 4 years ago? Gas prices have doubled in four years!! In the past the avg. american spent, roughly, $1400/yr on fuel. now they are spending upwards of $3000/yr!! Corned based products are up 15% over the past year, groceries, etc. due to trucking companies passing the cost to customers. So you are paying more for fuel, groceries, services, etc., than you were 4 years ago and you are doing better?
I digress, all of the candidates have filth on their hands, even Obama, but something has got to change in this country. I see McCain continuing the status quo, he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, his wife a baroness of the beer industry.
Obama’s struggle is more consistent with my struggle, as well as yours…he to was raised by a single parent, in poor conditions, and through education, has reached new heights. So, I assume that Obama will keep this in mind as he pushes legislattion.
Oh, and about your assertion that we “landed on the moon…” there are a lot of scientists out there saying that that didn’t happen and that it was a shame. why have we not been back to the moon in 40 years? Surely, they did not find all that they needed to know about the moon back then. With today’s tech, surely there would be some value to us going back there

I am still looking for your facts, idiot. All i read was liberal talking points. (Noun, verb, Bush Bash. It is so easy) But there is nothing that will fix gas prices right now. Nothing. We are stuck in this mess. If we had opened ANWAR in the 1990’s we would have the energy now. Clinton stopped that. Sure it would not bring the price down in a major way. But it would make a difference. If we had been getting the oil shale that would have help too. If we would have started drilling in those fertile fields on the ICS, that would help. All of those things together would have made a big change. Since you guys want to curb consumption does that mean that you will stop b!tching about energy prices. I hope so. Other wise it just looks like double talk.
Furthermore, we can walk and chew gum at the same time. We can get our resources here at home while perfecting alternatives. (by the way not one oil platformed leaked during Katrina) Right now there is no substitute for oil. I like my life style and have no intention of retuning to the stone age like so many democrats, environmentalist, and no-growthers want me to. This is the greatest country in the world and we can have it all. We can use oil until the alternatives are cheaper, better, safer, and perfected. These high energy prices are exactly what the left has wanted. Like it liberals?

I work hard. I have started my own business, like I said I do not count on others for my health and well being. You have been brained washed in to believing that the government is the answer. I am better off because of my hard work. You know what? I feel good about it to.
As for Obama, the liberal answers have not worked. The government run welfare state decimated the black family, that is a fact. It removed the need for the black male father figure. I know. I am the product of a single black welfare mother. More money to the government is not the answer. Individual responsibility is the key. It works every time it is tried. Just because Obama was raised in a similar fashion does not mean that I will blindly follow his liberal parade. That is just stupid. I have my own mind.
What is this moon business? Are you nuts or something?

So, you are voting for McCain, right? Facts on what? The fact the Bush lied about WMD? The fact the Haliburton, a company owned by Cheney, without biding? The fact that several of the Supreme Court Justices should have recused themselves from deciding on the fate of the ‘00 election because they had very close ties to the president? What facts do you want Crystal be specific about the facts you want!!

I want conservative justices on the supreme court. I do not want to lose in Iraq. Ok there were no WMD, most of the congress and the prior Clinton administration thought there were. Just because there were no WMD’s does not mean that we should pull out and have the place get even crazier and go back in at a later date. Cheney never owned Haliburton. That is a fact. Stock holders own haliburton you twit. No wonder you vote democratic, you do not know any better. I want lower taxes. I want a strong national defense and an aggressive foreign policy, no one else is going to look after our needs, and the world is full of a bunch of crazies that hate this country and everything we stand for. That is not our problem it is theirs. We are the greatest country in the history of this planet and have done more good than any one else, ever. It is a fact. Take a history course, you bed wetting wuss. You need some more “facts.” How about the fact that the democratic party does not want anything I want. Is that enough?

The Tuskeegee experiment, publc lynchings, Jim Crow Laws, JFK, MLk,Jr., RFK assassination, Teddy Kennedy “accident” which killed Joanne Copeqnee, etc. I am saying all of that to say politicians were in charge when all of these things went on and they knew about them and let them go on. it was a sincere apology!! i tried to delete the last blog, but it had gone thru. I apologize for “barking up the wrong tree” even if you don’t apologize for your name calling.
For the record, as many problems that America has, I would not want to live in another country. We are a great country but we are losing ground…Several foreign countries own American landmarks, like the Sears Tower etc., the Middle East owns us with oil, we are outsourcing all of our jobs overseas. I called to pay my mortgage on line and there was a foreign speaking person on the other line, i gave her my social and everything. that’s not good!!
i am more concerned about my local gov’t in fayette county rather than the nat’l gov’t. i am sure that regardless to who wins, McCain or Obama, i will be complaining 4 years from now. I have been doing it since Bush 1

Earlyou are killing me!! I am a Doctoral Candidate and am a gainfully employed American. I served during Desert/Storm Desert Shield in 3rd Army, Ft. McPherson. I used the GI. Bill to finance my education, as well as the Hope Scholarship. I own 2homes and am looking for a 3rd!! I am a 40yr old African-American.
I am saying all of that to say this…I have a vested interest in this country!! I am not a liability. Yes, I do pay taxes, but I try to pay minimally, if you want to pay the max tax you go right ahead. You need to learn how the shelter you money so that you won’t have to pay taxes. By renting my homes, I can write off all of the home improvements on each home. I can continue to rent or move back in them once all improvements are made. Therefor, the actual equity is even greater, better yet, all of the money that went to taxes come right back to me. Now who is the dumb idiot. So, i guess i don’t pay taxes
