Rosalyn Carter jumps on Sonny Perdue for shifting $8.5 million mental health funding
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Former First Lady Rosalyn Carter is taking Gov. Sonny Perdue to task for removing $8.4 million from mental health funding for children in the state budget.
The governor says the money is being moved elsewhere because the state overestimated the amount of children who needed the services.
But Carter, who has made mental health her signature issue, is having none of it. Here’s part of the statement she just issued:
When Governor Perdue announced the creation of the Mental Health Service Delivery Commission in August 2007, the mental health community was hopeful that he would take personal leadership responsibility to rectify the issues that plague the mental health system in Georgia.
“Resources for children’s mental health are being reduced before the Children’s Subcommittee of the commission has released its final recommendation report. The proposed funding cut for children’s mental health services calls into question both the credibility of the commission and the gravity with which the crisis at hand is being addressed by state leadership .
“The current budgets allocated for children’s mental health services clearly are not enough to provide for youth and their families in Georgia. Reducing these meager resources further is unconscionable and can only serve to exacerbate the problem.
“At this point, the mental health community is not even sure what the discrepancy is between the number of children who need services and those who receive them. Full accounting from the responsible agencies about the breadth of these issues is needed before any resources are diverted from the system.
“I call on Governor Perdue to ensure that no mental health resources are re-directed from the mental health system as we face the tremendous challenges before us.”

I question Rosalyn Carter’s mental health. After all, she did marry J. Carter.

Rosalyn, you go girl. Of course Sonny chicken hips has done nothing for children’s mental health. He has done nothing for children at all. After all, what payoff for Sonny is there in “children”. Goodness gracious, they will not be old enough to vote for just years and years. Why spend money on them. Look at it this way, chicken hips can’t get the media play out of children’s mental health that he can standing on the capitol steps praying for rain. Kid just aren’t the type of sound byte Republicans are looking for. And, by the way, Kove, if you stand the two side by side, Betty thinks most gals would certainly choose Jimmy’s Grin over Sonny chicken hips and porky jowls. And who could love the winner of a Nobel Peace Prize?? Betty could.

Who?? Jimmy Carter was (& is) insignificant enough. Now this lady is yapping about something. Does anyone even know who she is? Is she Jimmy’s sister or something? Come on, Jimmy Carter didn’t even matter when he was president! Now this lady….give me a break!!

being that the republican party’s base is nothing but buttfaced, uneducated, mental defectives, why would Sonny want to spend money to change any of that?

It is Bush’s fault that there is war. There was never any war, racism, or mental defects until Bush. Bush made Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter look like siblings. Bush also made them horse faces. I hate Bush!!!

Carter is a fool. He is married to a fool. He is insignificant. To answer Betty Boop (another foolish cartoon), y ou would except when he is an UTTER FAILURE and a PROVEN FOOL who was FIRED by the citizens. He is the worst president and ex-president ever. Who else had double digit inflation, recession and double digit interest rates while he sat cowered in the White House in a sweeter afraid of his shadow. He was paralyzed to fixt the MESS in IRAN that he created and that is still a problem today.
If a Carter says something then do the opposite as they are fools. I only hope that we do not foolishly elect another of this fools with no experience and poor judgment and cannot speak without a teleprompter. He is even more dangerous than the lusting in his heart JC.

Rosalyn Carter is 100% correct. The meantal staus of our children should never be compromised. I assume when a child with a mental problerm harms himself or others in Georgia we will then take notice. The children of Georgia need these funds returned to mental health fund. Wake up Georgia and care! MF

Why is Rosalyn trying to get the state to pay for her mental health care? Also, granted the woman has issues, but isn’t $8.4 million a little much for one person’s psychological issues?

Rosalyn Carter is a great American lady. Obama needs to consider her 4 VP.
The two most decent people in the United States today are the Carters.
Reagan’s october surprise and an inflation bubble did his presidency in. He was a great prez. Also, dont forget that Reagan said, “There you go again”.
I mean, what inbred conservative honk-n-wonk could resist that phrase? There you go again. Hey, I just said it too, elect me.
There you go again. there you go again.

Thank you so much for sharing this.. Only place I’ve seen it (thanks to a completely unrelated news alert)..
Wow..
Part of what I gathered from the last few days, thank you to James Salzer’s piece, is that Governor Perdue in some part stated children did not walk in the doors for service, and that is why the $$ are being shoved somewhere else..
* * MOST RESPECTFULLY * *
Dear Governor Perdue..
You are quoted as saying: “If the children had shown up, the money would have been there”..
Knowing what you do about just the very small part I myself have shared on the public record multiple times at hearings, the New Georgia RFI, yetc, would YOU walk in these same doors either here or right above me if YOU were wearing precisely my Shoes..?
Would YOU send your children to where I and those around me have been to over the last few years, the last decade..?
Please be honest.. No, you wouldn’t.. If you looked deep, deep down in your Heart of Hearts, you know you wouldn’t..
And neither probably would some sizably large untold number of all my fellow citizens, neighbors here because this is a very, very tight-knit family-to-family area..
Word gets around..
Everybody knows everybody’s business..
Lives.. Human Lives have been lost and destroyed, and the Path leads directly back through those front doors..
An open invitation :: Please come up here sometime in disguise..
Stand by at the local filling station.. Hang out at the WH.. Spend the day on the park bench in front of the Pickens Progress..
Ask around.. Ask about [those services] by either name they’ve gone by.. You’ll be lucky if you can get beyond a huge guffaw.. People may even simply walk away from you..
Seriously.
Will say (and have been meaning to share with you all, BTW), that I have asked of someone I heard was using those services this moment.. They and several others excitedly used the word R-E-S-P-E-C-T (without prompting) in describing a visible change.. From the emotion attached, one could tell that they had endured the Past and now saw future Change, that they knew the difference in today and..
Seven years ago..
Or more..
But still..
Just as there remains STIGMA towards mental illness, there remains * * EXTREME * * stigma and distrust towards the local services until YOU and all who have their hands on Georgia’s pursestrings, as a show of good Faith, help pour $$ back in to educating today’s remaining state-overseen MH staff Number One about RESPECT and COMPASSION for the PERSON WITH MENTAL ILLNESS..
We sure should NOT be taking monies away..
:frown:
Simultaneously to the RESPECT and COMPASSION for the PERSON training, there should be no Choice except to do an ongoing media blitz that actively reaches out and seeks the involvement and commitment of the public, especially in all the “hot” spots.. Surely by now, you all know where they are across the state.. That media blitz will be necessary to educate the public that there will indeed by pro-active Change..
THIS time..
For what it’s worth from an increasingly frustrated Keyboard, things have gotten to the point these Fingertips will no longer acquiesce until at the very minimally:
) A statewide revamp is overseen near wholly by (employed*) persons of all disabilities (PWDs) as these services affect us all..
*) An audit as suggested by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle is performed and is also overseen by a majority of (employed) PWDs..
) A statewide program is instituted that actively follows through on what precisely happened to *every.. single.. consumer who ever walked through those doors across the entire State of Georgia..
) Not *one more single Human Life finds its way to this Keyboard as having been lost nor destroyed directly due to mismanaged mental health care in our grand State..
Along with accessible transportation and gainful employment, mental health care services are one of the major Lifelines that keep our local communities Safe, Alive, and Thriving.. More than ever Today, with the state of the economy such as it is in the United States, without responsible, available, accountable health care services put in AND left in place across Georgia, we might as well throw in the towel now..
It is going to take ALL of us standing shoulder to shoulder to shoulder if we truly expect our statewide, interwoven system of community mental health care services to ever, ever work again..
Peace and best wishes from Talking Rock..

From reading all the dim posts we obviously need much more money spent on mental health. But why should it come from my pocket? Spend it on water, roads, etc. The Peanut Picker is only the 2nd worst POTUS. The worst was Slick Willie. Thank Gawd for Arkansas!

Does Sonny Perdue even have the capacity to feel shame anymore? This man dishonors Georgia practically on a daily basis. He needs to be reminded of this State’s highest values: wisdom, justice, and moderation. Apparently, Sonny is not wise enough to see how critical it is to care and nurture our children, is not just enough to protect the truly innocent, and not moderate enough to stop playing the big Republican for five minutes.

Republicans always want people to sit down and shut up when they’re right.
It helps them duck the issues, like cutting mental-healthcare funding for children. Despicable. The fact that Rosalyn Carter pointed it out doesn’t change that reality.
But I guess you’d rather snipe about how much you STILL hate Carter than address the very real situation at hand: healthcare. It’s just soooo much easier than actually governing, right?

The only mental health that Rosalyn should worry about is the failing mental health of her husband. If Jimmy carter was a dog they’d have him on the steel table and injecting the blue stuff in his veins, rubbing his head and telling he’s been a good old boy but now it’s time to go.

Gooooooooood morning/ bubba, the closet drinking, front row Baptist, wants to be remembered as a great governor but will be remembered as a short guy who wore built up shoes and womans underware. Rumors have been around for a long time that when bubba was practicing that he like to fondle his patints and agreed to surrender his license. Don’t laugh just ask somebody from Warner Robbins. He could use some mental heath care his self.

Sadly, mental health assistance has come, as always, too little and too late for some of the froth at the mouth Repugnicans who jumped on Jimmy and Rosalyn. Yelling fool and any other epithet they can think of, the Chicken lips and Chicken hips brigade is out for blood. Of course children’s health, mental and physical is last on the Republican list; children don’t vote. Talk about your silent majority! Nope, they knew where their bread was buttered and jammed too — giving permission to carry a submachine gun to church with you is where its at folks.
