In the 8th District, there are certain people you’d rather not be seen with
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Out of Washington, the Associated Press has a story today on the 14 or so Democratic members of Congress who have refused to endorse Barack Obama.
Naturally, Georgia’s own is among the first names mentioned:
Georgia Rep. Jim Marshall, a Democrat and Vietnam veteran who won his last election by about 1,800 votes, said he admires both Obama and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., but feels no obligation to state a preference.
“If it turns out one of them is an ax murderer or something like that I’ll make a choice,” he joked. Otherwise, “I don’t think I need to get involved.”
Actually, the 8th District congressman’s lack of involvement in presidential politics could go even deeper. Asked last week if Marshall would go to Denver for the Democratic National Convention, spokesman Doug Moore replied, “That has yet to be determined.”
We could be headed for Herman Talmadge territory here. The late governor and U.S. senator habitually scheduled alleged “fishing trips” that conflicted with Democratic conventions, in order to avoid public association with people the folks at home deemed questionable.
But it is only fair to point out that Marshall’s Republican challenger this year, former Air Force major general Rick Goddard, has his own associations to worry about.
On June 23, Vice President Dick Cheney will be the featured guest at a fund-raiser in Perry. Cheney still carries great weight as a magnet for campaign cash within the GOP.
The price of a photo with you and the important but widely unpopular man has been set at $1,000.
The question becomes whether Goddard himself will be using any images of himself paired with Cheney during the campaign.
Pose that possibility to Tim Baker, spokesman for the Goddard campaign, and this what you get: “Georgia is a special place, and people still respect the presidency and the vice presidency.”
But again, will the Republican candidate for Congress blanket middle Georgia with Goddard-Cheney photos?
That’s a strategic matter that’s not discussed with journalists, Baker said.

Todd is right. There is something very wrong in the world when a man is not afraid to associate himself with Dick Cheney for God’s sake, and another is afraid to say he likes Obama. Geesh, they need to get a real progressive in that seat who is not afraid to show his support for the candidate at the top of the ticket.

Goddard is Saxby’s boy.. His son is an aid for Saxby & most of Goddard’s money comes from Saxby.. At least he isn’t a DRAFT DODGER like Saxby. Jim Marshall may not be perfect but he’s better than another big government, borrow & spend Chambliss want to be.

What the hell has Obama accomplished and he thinks he can be president? Tell me, what had Obama done..what has he passed…..what qualifies Obama? You fools, many other democrats feel the same way as Marshall, so get use to it.

Why should our elected representatives be required to endorse anyone? They are paid to represent the people of their districts and to do their jobs, but most of them spend all their time posturing, pandering, and raising money for their own campaign or someone else’s. THE PEOPLE should vote for the President we want, and wouldn’t it be great if we educate ourselves first? I don’t need my Congressman to tell me who do vote for. Why would you?

Todd, obviously you are on Goddard’s staff & I would like to vote for a conservative Republican. Would your Boss have voted with Bush/McCain or Pelosi/Reid on Saxby’s Farm bill?? You know the 1 with the subsidity of $473,000,000 for race horses & $30,000,000,000 of other waste.. Is he a Republican or RHINO?

What has Obama done to earn the right to lead our country? Nothing. Neither has Hillary. Every Obama or Hillary supporter I’ve talked to claims Obama will fix the country, yet digging deeper reveals their decision is only based on a hatred of Bush. That’s a pathetic excuse, especially when Bush isn’t running for President. The Democratic party has made clear their stategy: vote for us because we aren’t Bush. Obama has started using his silver tongue in attempts to link McCain to Bush, and they are trying to tie up the Republican party with a baseless impeachment.

Chris, Todd & Sharon.. What does it take to get an answere..Although Sharon thinks Chaney is Party leadership lets just drop Bush. Is Goddard with McCain or Pelosi/Reid on Saxby’s Borroe from tha Arabs & give to the RICH farm bill?? To make it easy this is a quote from the WSJ (not a liaberal paper) on the Chambliss give away…..John McCain opposed the farm bill. In an impassioned speech on Monday, he declared: “It would be hard to find any single bill that better sums up why so many Americans in both parties are so disappointed in the conduct of their government, and at times so disgusted by it.”……..Just an answere please I really want to vote for a conservative REPUBLICAN..

Chris Bush Vetord Saxby’s Farm bill. Every conservative paper in the US said he should have vetoed the pork laden bill which included over $3 0,000,000,000 of waste. Bush did the right thing..McCain made several speaches opposing Saxby’s Rip Off. Bush/McCain did the correct thing in my opinion but our senior Senator cast his lot with out of state special interest, Pelosi, & Reid.

Ed…voting gives us an opportunity to express our opinion about the past performance of elected officials or about their training/experience, and/or plans for addressing the nation’s woes and moving it forward. In the case of the Presidential election, candidates can only tout their relevant training and experiences. Marshal, on the other hand, should be judged solely on his performance.
Marshal could be in a bit if difficulty if the party voters take the same attitude toward him that he has taken toward his party. His strategy is rather dicy at best. If he wants to be an Independent then he ought to run as one.
In politics there are times when indecision and inaction hurts.

Tom- i am not on Goddard’s staff, so i do not know how he would vote on the farm bill issue. I am, however, quite informed on Marshall’s lack of backbone and non-existant legislative resume. Every bill he has ever introduced has died in committee… Not one bill in 6 years has ever been passed out of committee.

Tom- also, the premise of all your arguments has been the vote for the farm bill is a bad vote. You say “Jim Marshall may not be perfect but he’s better than another big government, borrow & spend Chambliss want to be.” Well… your boy marshall voted for that bill. So what the difference between Saxby voting for the Farm Bill and Marshall voting for it, other than the fact that you are a partisan “trying” to hide that fact that you are just a liberal.

Todd, thanks for the reply, normally I’d just vote for Goddard & forget it but I am really worried about his connection to Saxby.. If he’s a real conservative I’ll vote for him but the last thing the Georgia Republican party needs is another Rhino. If Marshall gets re elected maybe a real Republican will run next time. I’d rather have no legislation than another FARM BILL rip off. You should remember Marshall has only been in the majority for a year & is not liked by Pelosi at all.

The Congress plays a role that the Executive branch doesn’t and the Courts aren’t supposed to. It is the only institution in our federal government charged with listening to the people, sorting through needs and interests of the citizenry, and applying both what it hears and its members’ own views to the issues of the day. The Founders’ intended that the people’s voices be heard in the halls of Congress. The measure that Marshall ought to judged by is how well he has listened to and acted upon the wishes of the 8th.
The question before some is whether a particular peice of legislation should be the deciding factor in casting a yes or no vote for him.

Todd as I wrote above I have problems with Marshall but we need to replace him with a REAL Republican. Look at Chamblee we all know he is bad for the USA but he has no opponents in the primary because he has raised a $8.4mm war chest from out of state special interest. This is a district drawn up for a Republican so Marshall won’t last here. Hopefully Goddard will stand up for a balanced budget rather than a borrow & spend RHINO. If he does I’ll gladly vote for him & send him a check.
