The locals don’t think the Jekyll Island fight has hurt Jeff Chapman
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Largely as a result of his efforts to block a Jekyll Island development plan, state Sen. Jeff Chapman of Brunswick has picked up opposition in the Republican primary — in the form of a local developer.
But local Republican officials think Chapman’s in good shape. Today’s Brunswick News offers a notable fer-instance:
Among those who believe that way is the Republican Party’s own chairman, George Skarpalezos. He’s not taking sides, refraining form endorsing Chapman or his July 15 GOP opponent, businessman Terry Carter, but Skarpalezos says the incumbent’s position is generally popular.
It’s a position that reflects his tendency to be fiscally conservative and considerate of what his constituents want, said Skarpalezos, adding that Chapman is trying to “preserve the integrity of Jekyll Island.”

“preserving the integrity” of Jekyll Island State Park is the correct phrase, rather than stopping the development, as reported by The Brunswick News’, Jeff Davis. Responsible development is what will take place, rather a developer feeding frenzy.

It is certainly good news that Chapmans value is recognized in the party.Chapman deserves to be reelected and his constituents deserve to be represented by such a man.

Jeff Chapman understands that every living thing disturbed by “development” will require two hundred years to regenerate or will be lost forever. A good leader considers the generations at least two removed from him. A great leader considers those seven generations removed. Whatever man builds on Jekyll will have to take the place of something natural that we may never see again. We must go carefully and thoughtfully forward to do as little damage as possible. I believe Jeff Chapman understands that and I am not convinced many in The legislature do.

I have had several opportunities to be with and talk with Sen. Chapman. He is the quintessential statesman…thoughtful, fair-minded, very smart and can listen (as in listening to all the Georgians who are vocalizing their deep desire for responsible conscious development on Jekyll.) I live in Athens, GA. but sent a sizable (for me) contribution to Chapman for his re-election campaign. I would urge Georgians from all over, who love Jekyll, to consider doing the same. He is too good to lose, either the election or for us to lose him!

Let’s be clear.Jekyll Island is a State Park. The Jekyll Island Authority has shown little regard to that status favoring instead high end development that would crowd out beach and recreational opportunities for the common man. No one on the JIA has even mentioned the tremendous number of residential developments underway or planned for the counties immediately surrounding Jekyll. In Glynn County alone Liberty Harbor will be adding over 3,000 residences and Lincoln Properties another 2,500. How will Jekyll Island accomondate the day trippers from these 2 developments with Linger Longer proposing to add a “beach village” to the Jekyll Island shoreline? The shortsightedness of the JIA board on this issue and many others, the most blatant being the disregard for the need for environmental studies preceeding development, is enough for Governor Perdue to reappoint the entire board with people who have backrounds and experience in the areas of conservation and the environment rather than real estate developers and bankers! But then again Governor Perdue has shown no interest in doing the right thing for Jekyll Island, afterall he did appoint this board! Thank goodness Jeff Chapman has recognized the importance of Jekyll as a state and national treasure and has taken the high road in attempting to protect the integrity of the island as originally set aside for the people of Georgia over 50 years ago. People from all over Georgia applaud Chapman’s efforts on behalf of their state park.

I am not a Georgia resident but my family has visited Jekyll Island for over 30 years. Senator Chapman is to be commended for trying to preserve the unique character of Jekyll. Because of his position on this issue we are going to do something never done previously, even in my own state and that is make a contribution to his campaign fund. If Georgia citizens vote him out of office I hope he will move to Ohio.

Senator Chapman has followed his conscience in trying to protect the over-development of Jekyll Island State Park instead of blindly following his party line. This alone is sooo rare with today’s politicians. So now it’s up to the people of GA (whether Democrat or Republican) to follow their conscience and reelect Senator Chapman.

I want to express my strong support for Senator Jeff Chapman; hopefully average Georgians in his district will re-elect him. Unfortunately, we live in a time when the primary driving force and value in our country is focused on the instant gratification and a desire to maximize profits. Rare is the politician who advocates for “average citizens”; the majority of elected officials are so beholding to donors that it negatively impacts their ability to objectively assess what actions are in the best interests of everyday people and our future generations. Senator Chapman has distinguished himself as a leader who is able to effectively advocate for a course of action that will enable Georgia’s Jewel to continue to exist in as natural of a state as possible so that it will be accessible to both persons of modest means and for future generations.
It would be a disgrace for Senator Chapman to be ousted by a candidate whose primary agenda is to ensure that his fellow developers make huge profits at the expense of the Georgia taxpayers by destroying the pristine nature and environmentally sensitive beach, marshes and maritime forests—not to mention how proposed projects will undoubtly significantly reduce the access of average people to the beach.

Jeff Chapman is what we need in our state goverment. He is what we need in Washington. I am so tired of having to swallow all the lowdown, unhanded, crap that goes on in our state and federal government. Winning an election often means it gives our government officials the right to see how many deals they can make for personal gain for themselves and others while courting these favors with the taxpayers time and money. Why do we keep putting up with this??
Jeff Chapman is the REAL DEAL. He can’t be bought. I only wish we could clone him and fill all the positions in Atlanta and Washington with others just like him. So please help re-elect him and stop the “forces that be” who want to railroad him out of office so that he will not stand in their way of taking Jekyll Island for their personal gain. Jekyll and the citizens of Georgia need to keep Jeff Chapman in office. Please vote for him and encourage others to do the same!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff Chapman has the integrity lacking in most politicians, including the JIA Board with the exception of Senator Boshears. He was quite forthcoming in stating his original opposition to any residences on Jekyll. His fallback position seems to be: The existing residences amount to a fait accompli - don’t make it a lot worse, with hundreds of condos. I support Jeff in his candidacy (including monetary support).

We visit Jekyll Island frequently and have great admiration for Senator Chapman’s integrity and responsibility to his constituents. He also represents well all the citizens of Georgia in protecting their park. As a response to Jon’s comment, we would rather have Senator Chapman to come to Michigan!

Jeff Chapman is a good, intelligent man of principle and independent thought. It’s reassuring to see those kinds of qualities in our political reps these days. I am grateful and appreciative for the way he has stood up to protect our wonderful Jekyll Island, I am sure he took a lot of flak for the stand he took on this profoundly important issue. Unlike many others who are in positions of political power, Sen. Chapman’s idea of “going green” for Jekyll Island doesn’t mean “take the money and run.”

The people in Senator Chapman’s district and all the citizrns of Georgia are fortunate to have a representative who looks out for their interests. He has stood up against other polititians and monied interests to keep Jekyll Island the State Park it was meant to be. Not only should he, a man of character be reelected but other senators and representatives should support him in this effort.

Senator Chapman has been “true blue” in upholding the wishes of the people in regards to protecting Jekyll Island from large development and beachfront intrusion of the shoreline. He reminds me of something we do not see that often in government as he is not at the mercy of those who hold the ticket to more campaign money or political favors. He is a true gentleman and certainly needs to be reelected and I beleive he will continue to look out for the protection of the state’s park and its resources.

I rarely support politicians but Jeff Chapman has been a huge help in the fight to preserve Jekyll. I am glad to hear that his support has not harmed his chances for re-election. Kudos to Sen. Chapman for remaining a human being while in office. I hope he is re-elected. We need to clone him. www.myspace.comsavejekyll
