Ron Paul on Bob Barr: ‘He’s called me a couple times recently’
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Newsweek has a Q&A with Republican presidential slogger, Ron Paul, who has refused to concede the race to John McCain. Here are a few of the points:
What are your feelings toward [Libertarian nominee] Bob Barr?
We’re pretty friendly. We’re allies, he’s a good friend. He has called me a couple times recently, so it’s very cordial.
Even though he has been targeting your supporters?
I can’t blame him. I’m sure that’s his goal. [Laughs]
What’s your relationship like with McCain?
It pretty much doesn’t exist. He has his beliefs and I have mine, and they just don’t come together very well.
Most of your supporters are libertarian. Why are you still a Republican?
It affords me opportunities to talk about the Constitution. If I had not been in one of the major parties, I wouldn’t have been in the debates. If I hadn’t been in the debates, no one would have ever heard of me.

A lot of Paul supporters have reservations about Barr, but since Paul has consistently said he will not be running as a third party candidate, what other choice is there? Chuck Baldwin? He won’t get nearly as many votes as Barr could, so all things considered, Barr is a great alternative.
I have voted for the “lesser of two evils” for a solid 20 years. I’m done doing so. Unless Paul miraculously gets the GOP nomination or runs third party, my vote is with Barr.
As far as Barr being a “spoiler” as he is consistently questoined about, I offer this: The GOP “presumptive” nominee is McCain. The DEM “presumptive” nominee is Obama.
Neither party has had their convention.
The LP has.
That means Obama and McCain as the spoilers for Bob Barr! :-)

What should be important to everyone is whoever gets picked should fulfill their job according the country’s rule book, the Constitution. When you are watching professional sports everyone expects the judges to not take sides or have their own agenda. They are expected to make sure that both sides stick to the rules. I don’t see why a President or any other person “SWORN” to uphold and defend it should have a “platform” The platform has been laid out since 1776 and if the rules are to change, there are appropriate ways to do it and that doesn’t mean voting for the next Dictator because you like the platform of that Dictator. For those of you that think America is a Democracy or that the Federal Reserve is Federal, please do your country and the rest of us a favor by staying home on election day. You are far too uninformed to be choosing our next leader. America is a Republic and the Federal Reserve is privately owned with 12 member banks. For those of you who just can’t figure out what it is going through the minds of the Paul supporters I would suggest for starters watching the online videos Overview of America and America Freedom to Fascism. I think I can speak for most Paul supporters when I say that living in this country is like being on an ice burgh where the majority of the people want to ride it out while the Paul people are screaming from the roof tops to get off the burgh and into the boat but Americans think the boat is too nutty of an idea. We have been playing this game of arguing over Democrat versus Republican with each having their left or right platform and we then tend to vote based on that and forget all about the Constitution as do our leaders.

If you were really tired of voting for the lesser of two evils you would write in Ron Paul. Bob Barr sucks, always has, always will, and is an opportunist. He would truly be the lesser of the evils, so screw him, he is still evil, and mucked up the LP. Hell, WAR would have been a better LP candidate.

Writing in Ron Paul’s name at the general election would be worthless; in most states, a write-in for RP would not be counted. Only two things matter to the major parties: votes and money. The more votes and contributions going to “minor” party candidates, the better.

Libertarians and Paul supporters who don’t like Barr should look at LP candidates for other offices. If the LP got just one House seat, it would do a lot more for the cause than writing in Ron Paul. Paul is organizing the GOP for future elections but he can do that without his supporters writing him in.

So is Ron Paul a sell out but claims that he is not??? Let me get this straight: He only stays in the GOP race to have a platform to speak from. However he does not really buy into the various planks of the Republican Party. Now I truly understand why the LP supports the legalization of Prostitution. Ron Paul is consistent, honest, and very smart. I’ve always been impressed with Bob Barr for a long time, but not as much as I have been with Paul. The fact that Paul’s was often the single dissenting vote in congress shows that he does his job. Barr doesn’t have such a record.
IF Ron Paul is still a candidate in the general election, then I will vote for him. However, IF he endorses another candidate, then that is good enough for me; I’ve found him to be THAT trustworthy.
Barr likes Paul. I don’t know if that reciprocates.

Paul made it clear that he is the messenger. If John McCain changed his positions today, Paul would come to him, find out if he is sincere and bring him into the camp. Most of Paul’s supporters have not been consistent. Barr changed two years ago. He’s not opportunist, he is an avenue to continue our fight beyond the RNC. C’mon people, if we fight among ourselves we have already conceded defeat.

First, a few comments about “andy’s” comment. Do you have a low self esteem, or are you just lazy? You shame your parents enough by not using your Christian name, which I assume is Andrew – but, you don’t even capitalize “Andy.” Or, are you so prideful that you liken yourself to “e. e. cummings”?
Never mind. I’m not really interested in you – but, your statements (that to me appear to be incite-ful) are either the result of ignorance or malice.
Andy: “So is Ron Paul a sell out but claims that he is not??? Let me get this straight: He only stays in the GOP race to have a platform to speak from.”
Response: “Sell-out?!” You better check your premises. It’s the Republican Party that “sold out.” Dr. Paul has remained in the Republican Party to speak from the solid Republican Platform that was the basis for the emergence of the Party to begin with. Read the principles of the Republican Party articulated in “Why I am a Republican.” Then try to align that the rhetoric that is being spewed from the Republican National Committee and its “presumptive” candidate.
Andy: “However he does not really buy into the various planks of the Republican Party.”
Response: I’m not sure what you mean by “the various planks of the Republican Party.” At one time in our political history a “plank” was an articulation of a parties principles on a certain subject. E.g., When I was a teenager we had the draft. The Republican Party’s “plank” could have been stated along the following lines: “The Communist Threat, as exemplified by its expansion into Viet Nam is an immediate threat to the safety and security of the United States of America, and therefore requires that the US Government raise an Army to combat the expansion. This threat is of such a nature that it warrants conscription of the citizenry.”
I don’t know what the “plank” of the Republican Party at the time was, but this is the character of a “plank.” [Mind you, I would not subscribe to this plank. But, it is honest enough to articulate principles.]
Now, I ask you “andy” – exactly what are the “planks” of the Republican Party today?” I’m serious, what are they?
Andy: “Now I truly understand why the LP supports the legalization of Prostitution. Go light up another reefer and maybe you won’t seem so crazy” [sic – no period].
Response: Here we go again. Ayn Rand was right! When an argument of reason can not be genuinely put forth, the argument of intimidation is brought out. Andy, I suggest that you go back to your master and say something to the effect of: “Sorry, Master. I tried. I gave them what you told me to give them, but they are wiser now. Please don’t beat me Master. I will do better the next time. ‘What?! No! Please don’t beat me Master!’”
Okay, finally I get to the second part of my comment.
Interestingly enough, the Constitution does not even recognize political parties. Well, it’s not all that interesting when you consider that the Constitution was created as a Republic. (“Democracy” was despised by the Founding Fathers.) However, this “political season” has shed some of the barnacles and other drags on the Ship of State known as the United States of America. [Homage to Bob Schulz.]
We seem to be riding a little higher in the water, and the “pirates” that have overtaken the vessel are getting worried. Yes, the R3volution continues. If you don’t understand this, you must be a product of public education. [This is no disparagement to public education teachers!]
The fact that dialog is still going on with Dr. Paul is evidence in itself that there are “many” people that are not satisfied with the Republican’s “presumptive” candidate. As a State Delegate to the Republican Convention of Georgia, I have to tell you: It was a scam! It was not a “Delegation of the People of Georgia that subscribe to the Principles of the Republican Party.” No, it was a “top-down imperative!” Categorically, this is not “representative government!”
Recently I have been exposed to the concept of the “four boxes of political exchange”: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. I’m on the “soap box” now. There are many that feel that the “ballot box” has been appropriated. I’m not sure that I disagree. As for the “jury box,” can there be any doubt that the judiciary has all but silenced the fourth estate?
Well, I hope that we get more serious comments than from “andy.” I, for one, am tired of such nonsense.

I completely agree with Jack D. If we don’t get on the boat the berg will melt and where will they be? I planned on writing in Ron Paul but since learning in Ga my vote would not be counted, I have decided to pick a candidate from one of the independent tickets. I have thrown my vote away for the last time, but I will not vote for someone because they are the favorite of their party. I will vote based on my learnings of the candidates history and platform; everyone who votes should be as well informed as possible and I don’t mean learning from the media alone, get info from other than biased sources. My sympathies are with Dr. Paul and Bob Barr, but there’s a good chance I’ll be voting for Obama in November. I’d rather see a tax and spend President than a mortgage-our-future President. However, should the election in my state tilt strongly in either direction (for Obama or for McCain), I’ll vote for Bob Barr.
Barr officially switched parties two years ago, but he has been evolving and moving towards libertarianism and the Libertarian Party for much longer.
I’m a fiscal conservative with socially progressive tendencies, not a libertarian (small l or big L). There are parts of libertarianism I like and parts I don’t like. But I’m just about ready to quit the GOP and throw in with the kooks, nuts, and Objectivists, if it will help break down the two party system.

I live in Virginia and have seen write-ins allowed on ballots, so I plan to write in Ron Paul. He is the only candidate that has ever excited me since I have been eligible to vote, and I don’t really care to what party he aligns himself — it has been a very long time since I have seen anyone with integrity run on any ticket. While it is regrettable to wind up feeling like a modern-day Don Quixote, the alternatives are far less appealing to me. Ultimately, one needs to do what conscience dictates, regardless of the efficacy. The result of doing otherwise is evident in our current condidtion. Enough people objecting to the status quo could make a difference, but they have to realize that and then act. I admit that it is quite a quandry, but one person, one vote is what it boils down to, and regardless of the outcome, we are beholden to no one but ourselves to vote as we believe.
I rather doubt that Ron Paul has any illusion about winning the Republican nomination either. But I think that he has surprised himself as well as a lot of other people by the response he has received in various places during his race. We are not known for patience in this country, but that doesn’t mean that patience won’t eventually win out. I rather look at voting for Ron Paul as laying the ground for a future that will see him being viable, and I have to trust that we will make it to that time.
Meanwhile, we know what we know about the way things are in this country these days, and it behooves us to bear that in mind as we deal with whatever gets thrown at us by our so-called “representatives” when they make a dog’s breakfast out of our civil liberties, standard of living, and the like. The times to act are during terms of office, as well as during elections.

I’ll be writing in Ron Paul too. In my mind there is no lesser of two evils. No other presidential candidate even comes close to what I want for this country. None of them even scratch the surface on what REALLY matters to “We the People”. Voting for another candidate just doesn’t make sense in my mind. I would just be voting for something I don’t approve of. I’ve never believed in treating the ballot box like a chessboard.
Your vote should come from your convictions and sound reasoning. If we all voted for the “most likely candidate”, why don’t we all just vote for Brittany Spears? I get so furious when people don’t vote their consciousness because “He/She probably won’t win.” WTF is that!!!? Your vote isn’t a prediction of the future, your vote MAKES the future.

I’m writing in Ron Paul. Bob Barr is unconvincing and the LP’s current favored nominee for VP, Wayne Allyn Root, thinks Ron Paul is naive about foreign policy? I’ve been a libertarian for a long time and have watched the gradual change in the LP since it severed its roots as an educational instrument and began instead to seek political power. The LP has had to sacrifice its principles in exchange for popularity and votes. The party of principle is no longer so. The battle for liberty cannot be won at the ballot box until it is first won in the hearts and minds of men.

Folks you have to remember McCain is not eligible and corrupt. The McClellan thing could bring pressure on the press propaganda cartel. McCain/Bush involvement in the 1.4T S&L loss and the current housing/credit problems make it extremely dangerous to vote for anyone but Paul. The republicans still have not had their convention. We know the press will not go to the opensecrets org web site and match Isman fees to media legislation. It is a billion dollar attack on the first amendment by allowing cross media ownership. Propaganda is not good critical debate is. Stand by the rule of law and vote you conscience. If you believe in natural rights stand your ground. Don’t let the propaganda machine divide. Keep the ideal of small government and individual freedom alive. IMO the best solution is to file suits at the state level to keep McCain off the Ballot he cannot hold the office. Article II section 1 clause 5 cannot be overridden bu a Senate amendment. If the issue can be made there is not enough time for Article V (2/3 state) to work. The strange thing to me is why Republicans and the press don’t question why McCaskell,Obama and Clinton sponsored the bill.. Are Republicans that stupid? Don’t they remember 2000? Power has to leave Washington and get distributed back to the states and more importantly individuals.

In states which allow write-ins (for example, Oklahoma doesn’t allow ANY), votes are only counted for CERTIFIED write-ins. That means that the candidate has to have requested that his/her votes be counted.
We do not yet know if Paul plans to do this in any states. If he doesn’t, the only way to cast a vote which will count for something is to vote for anyone other than a Republicrat. I will vote for Barr but if you don’t really believe he has had a true change of conscience (which I do), then vote for the candidate of another third party.
But make sure that the vote will be counted. The only waste to waste your vote is to vote for someone whose votes will not be counted.

It was a pipe dream to believe that Dr. Paul could have pushed his platform to the forefront of a brokered GOP convention. At best, the party may have been able to promise to work towards restoring individual rights, balancing the budget and calling on future congresses to declare war in future conflicts. That said, the presumptive nominee John McCain would have just not followed the party line once again as he has proven in the past.

The write-in rules vary widely from state to state. I used to be a Republican, but now I have no idea what this means. A bunch of idiotic, geriatric, old-world fools have taken over the Republican Party and turned it into the Inquisition Party. Then, I look at the Democrats and their “superdelegate” system, and wonder, how is this progressive? Both conventional parties offer more of the same old B.S.—special interest politics, Big Government, and a complete inability to change. Both parties are symptomatic of complete statism.
I’m really growing tired of the political race. How about we vote for no President? Maybe the U.S. would be better off if there were no “head of state” or “Commander in Chief.” I am really looking for a person who pledges to do very little. I think we would all be better off if the next president was a do-nothing.
At this time, we have a do-nothing Congress. That is fine. But, let’s also get a do-nothing president, and a vice president who is seen and not heard.

DON’T VOTE For those who call themselves Ron Paul Republicans and to those Harry Browne Libertarians, if you are like most Americans who do not agree with the choices for president, Act Responsibly: Don’t Vote! www.lewrockwell.com/mcelroy/mcelroy37.html
MOST AMERICANS ARE SO DISGUSTED WITH THE CHOICES, THEY STAY AWAY FROM THE POLLS “Viewing the nation as divided into two camps ignores the largest single group of Americans, namely, those who don’t vote at all. In the 2000 election only about 54 percent of eligible voters actually turned out to vote. In 2004, despite expensive get-out-the-vote campaigns by both ideological camps, the percentage who voted rose only a few points from the previous election. In fact, in 2004, an all-time record was set when more than 80 million eligible voters failed to vote; this number was far greater than the votes secured by either Bush or Kerry, by a substantial margin. In fact, no Republican or Democratic nominee has attracted as much as 30 percent of eligible voters since Ronald Reagan in 1984.” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redstatesandbluestates#Polarization

As far as Ron Paul’s not endorsing another 3rd party candidate, it may have to do with his desire to continue effectively serving his constituency in 14th District, TX by, amongst other things, “speaking to power” on the various committees. He is running unopposed and got 70% of the votes in the district’s GOP primary.

I do not care what everyone thinks is best for America. I know what is best for us, Ron Paul! I am pro choice and he is pro life but he wants to leave that up to the states where it belongs. Im ok with that. He wants our money that we bleed for to be worth something again. I like that. He wants to shrink our fed and put the law making back to the states where it belongs. You shouldnt double tax so why double the laws. He hates pork projects and beleaves that the american people should have a say in the spending of there money. I agree. He wants to bring troops home and protect our borders. I live in texas, if you dont live in a border state you shouldnt even comment on the problem. He is the only one that listened to Washington’s farewell address. If you dont know it then tattoo it over your heart. I can go on and on and on but its not my place to do so. The american people need to wake up and turn off the TV and learn about people before they place a vote.
Honest? Where has he lied? Obama, Hill, Jon? Where have they lied? We can tear them all apart. Jon - as a prisoner of war he was almost always in a clean pressed uniform after his solitary confindment? Hill - sudden deaths of people with information of her bad money deals and bill sex acts. Obama - Afracia first church and three homosexual church members that kney him on a personal level we killed with a bullet in the back of the head after rumors of his bisexuality leaked out from some of those men.
I can go on for ever but its edjucated americans that will find the truth and free this country from what it is in now. Death. The only light I can see is Ron Paul 2008. Open your eyes, find out what is going on by the only free press, find The American Free Press…

Yes. Ru Paul proved the power of his message during the primary. Ru Paul and his million delegate votes will get the Presidency by default. No one can defy Ru Paul. He is sooooo popular. He is almost ready to take it away from McCain. Ru Paul will even beat Obama.

I do not support Bob Barr. Therefore I will not vote for him. This is no “reservation” of mine. Bob Barr voted FOR the Patriot Act, for the Iraq Un-War, and that expresses the opposite of Paul’s message. They may be pals, but that does not mean I will vote for Barr. I am not that much of an airhead, or that much of an opportunist “smart” voter. Ron Paul will get my vote. I will most likely register absentee and send in my vote. That way it is less likely to get thrown away. Hey, even if its thrown away/not counted/wipes a neocon a*****, at least I know I voted honorably, and I will be satisfied with that. Make a statement- keep your vote for Paul.

When voters findout about Pastor Hagee serving the god of the antichrist they will draft Ron Paul. That word is found only in the books of the bible called Epistles of John. and only refers to a spirit, not a man like Hagee invisions. antichrist has an objective. So does God. Faith in whoever you serve.

Ru Paul will not be drafted for anything. The man’s message did not resonate with the Republican voters of our country. If I never meet another one of his idiotic supporters again, I will not complain. If I never see Ru Paul’s wrinkled mug, or have to listen to some dippy speech, delivered in a constant nervous stutter, I will be just fine. If the man wanted a true shot at the Presidency he should have run as a third party candidate. He lost. Get over it. Peace.

Wayne Allyn Root will represent the Libertarian Party in 2012, 2016, and 2020, until the job gets done. Ron Paul is playing politics with freedom, trying to reanimate the beached whale that is the Republican Party. Maybe there are a few good Republicans, and maybe this is a good thing. That said, Paul supports Chuck Baldwin (Constitution Party), and Bob Barr(LP) both half-assed. The CP is on the ballot in ~10 states, and is therefore marginal as a presence in national elections (plus, they have fatally mixed god and government in their platform). Ron Paul has unwittingly failed to use the momentum of his political campaign to move towards political freedom effectively. Too bad. The LP has 48 states of hard-won (and often stupidly lost) ballot access. But their ideas are the right ones. If the Ron Paul supporters supported Barr this election, and got their lazy asses to the LP convention next time (2012), it would be an unstoppable revolution. Instead, they float ignorant ideas on message boards like this, that let McCain know he doesn’t need to fear them in the slightest, because they will mount a “write in campaign”. Do a little research. “Write ins” are thrown out in the US. Plus, you do nothing for the future with a write in, because it threatens no politician’s job in the next election cycle. BALLOT ACCESS IS BASED ON THE VOTE TOTALS OF THE PREVIOUS ELECTION! Barr and Root would support all of Paul’s legislation, including the legislation that would make the most difference, the FIJA. Look it up if you don’t know what I’m talking about, go to http://www.fija.org

When did Ru Paul ever have any momentum? He did not win a single state. The Ru Paul movement was in the mind of his crazy supporters. It is the 21st century, and the man flies a blimp around????? Nuf said.

Why dont you explaine why you dont like him? Are you capable of debate? or do you fear it? Now, Go back to dailykos.

Churchill,
You are a dunce. He “lost” because of people like you who wouldn’t know what’s good for them if it crawled into your overgrown pie hole…

I like Bob Barr (after his change of heart) and I like Ron Paul. If they ran together on the Libertarian ticket I’d vote them for sure. I don’t think Obama and McCain could be too much different on foreign policy but definitely on social policy, and I’d side with Obama on that matter for sure. Write In Ron Paul?
