Roy Barnes hired to block Dunwoody legislation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Dunwoody Crier, published by “Georgia Gang” host Dick Williams, is reporting that former Gov. Roy Barnes was hired by DeKalb County to contest state legislation allowing a referendum on a city of Dunwoody.
Says the Crier, quoting documents obtained through the state Open Records Act:
Barnes, now a trial lawyer in Marietta, was hired last year by the county attorney, William Linkous III.
“You will assist us,” Linkous wrote to Barnes on April 27, 2007, “in determining the impact that the City of Dunwoody legislation will have on DeKalb County and with follow up litigation opposing HB 264.”
..Barnes will bill the county at a rate of $473.33 per hour. His associates will be billed at $233.33 per hour, with paralegals, law clerks and other researchers to be billed at their regular rate, but not more than $95.00 per hour.
.Last month, DeKalb’s chief executive, Vernon Jones, took the Board of Commissioners into executive session to discuss litigation. Barnes was at the meeting.
A referendum vote is scheduled for July 15.
WSB-TV has quoted DeKalb County Commissioner Elaine Boyer as saying the DeKalb commission wasn’t informed of the Barnes hiring.

Wow, Roy B. is looking mighty rotund these days, that or he looks like an aging lawyer who makes $500 per hour because he had a plum previous job (plus his daughter makes $250 per hour for the ame law firm, of course):

And of course its Ann Kimbrough making the official county response in this WSB story. Vern has been out of the county campaigning for Senate for months, even though he gets paid $150 per year to be the DeKalb County CEO:

King Roy still feeding off of the public trough. He and his associate (daughter) have been under this agreement since April 2007 without the knowledge of the Board of Commisioners. Sound just like more of the same in “Jonestown”. $49,000 contracts by the bushel to avoid having to bid, sweetheart deals to cronies and campaign contributors, the Police Dept. in complete meltdown, and since running for the Senate, a no-show CEO.
Hopefully the indictments are not too far down the pipeline.

DeKalb County is, as far as I’m concerned, one of the smartest government entities around if they hired Roy Barnes. He is one of the most effective, intelligent and personable trial lawyers in the Southeast. As far as his fee is concerned, he has paid his dues to get to the top of his game - obviously that’s more than you can say for some. Indictments are not needed with this situation - it’s the County’s right - however, indictments for character assination may be a different story. People need to get over themselves because they dislike the smartest man ever elected Governor in the state of Georgia. And, if his daughter is with his firm, then she’s pretty smart too. Note: I don’t work for Roy Barnes and he doesn’t represent me in any legal matter.

Why can’t we all just get along?
Let Dunwoody do it’s own thing and maybe things will be shaken up in DeKalb gov that we can then have a responsible administration who talks to each other.
If the quote below is true, this lawsuit will cost us the residents of DeKalb lots of money and only the attorneys will get rich.
“The lawsuit if filed by DeKalb County will be against the State of Georgia not the against the city or citizens of Dunwoody.”

What a ridiculous waste of taxpayer money. Is it any wonder why Dunwoody wants to control its own checkbook?

Better check Barnes won lost record, Vernon. It’s not too good on cases against the State of Georgia like this one.
And no way is he a $500/hour lawyer. Few are. This is taxpayer money we are talking about spending. The claims are frivolous. More a CEO Vernon Jones ego trip. How much has Jones cost taxpayers in legal fees over the years?

Good! I was consider filing a complaint myself with somebody. I don’t like the idea that the rest of the state made a decision about what would happen in my county and then only part of the county gets to decide about what will affect all of us. That’s not right.

how could a county commissioner and a state senator not know the county hired Barnes if, according to the Dunwoody paper, “Rep. Jill Chambers had said for months that Barnes would be retained to sue”
Maybe the Dunwoody city pushers should have listened to Rep. Chambers instead of attacking and insulting her. Do you think maybe she is right about the other city budget issues, too?

The County testified at the House Committee hearings this past January regarding the lawsuit on HB 264 (that bill changes the disbursement of HOST sales tax to help fund the city of Dunwoody). It was also discussed in DeKalb Delegation meetings at the Capitol. I brought it up in subsequent committee hearings and again on the House floor during debate on Dunwoody incorporation.
So - everyone at the Capitol knew about the potential for a legal challenge and members of the press were informed about it all through the legislative session.
During a recent Dunwoody Homeowners Association meeting, I handed out copies of the 2007 Attorney General’s advisory letter regarding the possibility of challenging the HOST legislation as unconstitutional. This was the second time I had brought that information to the DHA for distribution but the first time I was allowed to distribute it. Now they have determined that all future handouts must be approved by the DHA before distribution to the public.
Why have the cityhood supporters and the Dunwoody legislative sponsors repeatedly tried to keep this information from the voting public?
Hopefully, one day they will allow me to actually speak at one of their meetings!
Well, at least they are finally starting to realize that these important contingencies need to be addressed and brought to the public’s attention…
So go ahead you tax-raising bigger-government advocates, attack me again for trying to help you prepare for the expensive challenges of creating a new city in DeKalb.

Check the REAL record of Vernon’s Stooge, er Jill Chambers. She VOTED FOR THIS BILL. Look up HB 264 on the legslative web site, Chambers voted YES for this.
The County Commission was NOT TOLD UNTIL a couple of days ago about Barnes. Chambers had full knowledge of Barnes being hired last year. How did that happen? Maybe there was some pillow talk going on. Something smells when a state rep from another party knows before the democrat board members. I can’t wait until her opponent if November starts putting this and all of the other accumulated evidence out. With Bobby Kahn behind him, young Chris Huttman is going to take her out. Probably with a lot of funding from the folks in Dunwoody. Bobby plays the same kind of brutal campaign tactics that Chambers uses and this will be fun to watch Chambers have thrown up against her what she has used on others.

That’s a fairly low fee. Most partners at reputable major law firms in Atlanta are at a similar rate or usually higher and they weren’t governor of Georgia.

HIGH FEES FOR SURE this is county, public trust, taxpayer money they are dealing with. $500 an hour is HIGH. Most city attorneys do this work for $100 or $150. Not only is this gouging taxpayers, it’s a frivilous suit — just like the one Vernon’s been waging for years against all the other cities in DeKalb who had an agreement with DK to share the HOST monies. Jones and all his folks are real losers. And they will spend taxpayer money and lose this case to. It’s against the state and the legislature will always be back in session. And the fact that Barnes was governor only means one thing - you can call him Gov as he loses this case.
