Martin alleged to have raised nearly $350,000
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tondee’s Tavern is apparently on Jim Martin’s exclusive e-mail list. Blogger Jon Flack has this, which he said was received from the Martin campaign:
Jim Martin, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, announced today that he raised nearly $350,000 in less than two weeks after entering the race for U.S. Senate last month.
Martin, who launched his campaign March 19, raised $346,675 through March 31, the end of the first quarterly filing period for the Federal Election Commission. Martin ended the month with more than $330,000 cash on hand.
If true, this is an amount that’s meant to send a signal. It’s more than the five other Democrats in the race, led by DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones, raised in all of 2007.
More important, and still unknown, is who gave Martin his money — and whether any of it is puffery from personal loans. Candidates won’t be required to show all the details of their first-quarter fund-raising until the middle of this month.

Jim Martin raised his money from his liberal trial lawyer buddies who the AJC sited him for putting above the needs of children back when he was in the State House. They are simply returning the favor.
350K is not enough for him to win the primary v. 5 opponents. Jim Martin’s liberal values will not fly in Georgia.

I for one stand with Saxby! Can’t wait to see him in Athens this weekend at the College Republican Tailgate!
Keep up the good work, Martin doesn’t have a prayer.

Martin’s support came from mostly Atlanta lawyers. He’s not going to be keeping up that pace for long.
And he knows it. He knows that Georgians won’t support his campaign, thats why he’s already looking to Democrats in California and elsewhere for money. The DSCC is planning to support him with PAC money also.
Martin can’t make it on his own.

Jim Martin served in Vietnam while Sniveling Saxby dodged the draft. Character should count for something.

I gave Jim $100.00 and I’m neither a trail lawyer, liberal or bitter, angry, small minded republican.
I am however, a democrat who believes that the last 8 years have seen an erosion of our liberties, stand of living and international prestige (for those that don’t know, that’s something you don’t get by bombing the hell out of everybody)

What is all this about trial lawyers? I am NOT a trial lawyer… and I gave to Martin’s campaign as soon as he announced.
Yes, it is an uphill battle against an incumbent but then so was beating Senator Macacca in VA and FIVE other incumbent Republicans in 2006. Georgia isn’t Virginia but St. Saxby doesn’t exactly have the stellar approval ratings.

Saxby needs to come home. He votes with the President more than 90% of the time, marrying him to the failed polices of this administration. Nobody, I repeated, nobody is right 90% of the time. Jim has served this state in elected and appointed office. He served our country as a Lt. in Vietnam while Saxby was doing whatever it was Saxby was doing. By the way, Georgia doesn’t love Saxby-his approval rating is lower than Bush’s, hovering in the high 30’s. Wait until Georiga farmers learn about his cozy relationship with Big Ag.-Saxby may find himself in the 20’s. Jim, on the other hand, has broad support, and his first quarter draw reflects the fact that many people were sitting on their endorsements and their wallets hoping he would get into the race. Mark my words: Jim will have the money he needs to run this race, and I anticipate that his support will be broad and deep among Georgians who think that it’s time for a change in Washington.

The comments from Chambliss supporters have a tinge of arrogance to them. Its that kind of thinking that leads to defeat.
Chambliss has two things to overcome… accountability and the potential to be effective under a Democratically controlled Senate. Georgia has benefitted very little under his GW Bush lapdog strategy and during the seven years Republicans were in control of the Senate.
Chambliss may be a good person but he certainly has not demonstrated that he’s Senatorial material.

I’m surprised anyone is posting here given that maybe 20% of Georgians even know who Jim Martin is.

Amy, You said, “many people were sitting on their endorsements and their wallets hoping he would get into the race.” It will be interesting to see how many of these “people” are special interests and lawyer buddies groping for favor. I am disappointed in you Amy! Jim Martin has been proven to have kept needy Georgians from much needed relief. Shame on you! You know about this and still support Jimmy Martian!

Chambliss has got everyone fooled in this state. He has gotten very little done in his six years as senator. He says he is a friend of the farmers, but his votes for cuts to agriculture & education are just some of the things he will be held accountable for in the general election. I myself who is a republican living in middle georgia thinks it’s time for a change & it begins with chambliss.

As the original post indicated, no one knows where Mr. Martin’s contributions came from, so those who are insisting it is from the dreaded trial lawyers are just guessing or trying to stir something up to divert attention away from the real issues facing the state. And besides, aren’t trial lawyers voters just like everyone else, with a right to contribute to whomever they like?

Your comments, RJ, are interesting. The key question is whether the Democrats can make Draft Dodger Saxby the fall guy here in Georgia for all of Bush’s failures. Linking the two together is going to be difficult. Certainly Saxby has done very little while in office but whether normally Republican-leaning voters can be persuaded to punish him for supporting Bush is another matter. If Martin can position himself as a moderate, we just might be able to ride the national Democratic tide this November.

Well we know where Saxby’s contributions come from BIG BUSINESS & SPECIAL INTEREST. Wouldn’t it be great to have someone who actually repersents Georgia.
