Linder has a Democratic opponent
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Democrat Doug Heckman is using a 2 p.m. conference call with reporters today, to announce his candidacy for the Seventh District congressional seat now held by John Linder, the Republican incumbent.
Heckman, who describes himself as a conservative, is a graduate of West Point, and recently served as a senior advisor to the Iraqi army. So he fits the pro-military, Jim Marshall-style profile that Democrats have attempted to develop among their candidates.
Heckman’s web site can be found here.
The Seventh is still considered Republican territory, but Heckman’s candidacy is likely to fuel GOP speculation over whether the state’s two longest-serving Republican congressmen, Linder and Nathan Deal, will sign up for another term.
Qualifying is at the end of this month. But you can bet that Republicans in Washington don’t want to see any more open seats in the House than they already have.
(Got a call this afternoon from a staffer for Deal. The congressman is in fact running again — though he won’t raise any local money until he has opposition. So all of you ambitious Republicans in north Georgia, please stand down.)

I am a middle-of-the-road, Southern, Sam Nunn kind of Democrat. I am pro-defense, fiscally conservative and socially moderate. I’m in Doug Heckman’s camp. He’ll make a fine Congressman.

Linder runs, he wins hands down. He garners over 75% of the vote each time out and they have redrawn his district three times in ten years.

“I am a middle-of-the-road, Southern, Sam Nunn kind of Democrat.”
It’s always amazing to me these “blue-dog” Democrats have to reach back to Sam Nunn as someone they can openly associate with. When you state you are a “Sam Nunn” Democrat you might as well say you are a member of the Bull Moose Party - both have about as many followers.

You can’t beat Linder. He always moves to a district he can’t possible lose to.

It’s time for someone to replace John Linder. The only thing he has going for him is this fair tax plan he keeps bringing up every two years . What other type of major legislation linder has offered? None. Same goes for Nathan Deal who has also had a free ride up in the 9th district. It’s time for these two hacks to be kicked out of office.

Does the entire district run against Linder? Hey, Mike can you explain? I have never heard of an entire district running for one seat.

Linder’s name is inextricably tied to the Unfair Tax, so he needs to go. NOW.

Gary…Past elections are based upon past terrain and events. This election year Linder, like all GW Republicans Congressmen from Georgia, have accountability and potential for effectiveness in a Democratically controlled Congress to overcome. Linder has been nothing but a showhorse on the Fair Tax issue. Its a shinning example of his inability to get things done. This election year favors candidates who can deliver not just posture with Town Hall meetings and extensive mailouts at taxpayers expense.

Linder and Deal have wrongly supported Bush Jr. and the neocons and must accept their responsibility for the war and all of it’s consequences. The trillions of dollars the war will cost taxpayers, the death and destruction to our military, our soldiers and their lives and families, gas and oil prices the highest ever, our economy is on the brink, denying global warming until it’s to late, Republicans have had their chance to change the world and have almost destroyed it. I only hope the Democrats can repair all the damage the republicans have done.

You’re right RJ, past elections are based upon past terrain and events. However you obviously don’t live or know the 7th district like I do. Yes Linder runs on the Fair Tax, but the people in this district are just as passionate about it as he is. I have lived in both Linder’s and Deal’s district in the last 15+ years. Both do very well and listen to their constituents which is virtually unheard of these days. Trust me, Heckman can run, but in the end he loses badly and only shows a blip on the electoral radar.

Linder, is a spineless jellyfish swimming in the sea of ignorance. He has voted right down the line with all of Bush’s useless, irresponsible agenda. Just one look at Linder’s voting record and you know right away he is out of touch and has little or no regard for the middle class. He is more interested in toadying to his district’s ten cent millioners. His advocacy of the fair tax should give some semblance of his lack of concern for middle and lower income families. The fair tax is just another right-wing gimmick that caters to the wealthy.
