The sounds of Sonny: On Sunday beer sales, on killing car taxes — and maybe on a transportation tax, too.

Gov. Sonny Perdue cut loose on members of the House on Thursday, for raising the issue of retail sales of Sunday beer and wine — and for a hefty tax cut that he called “irresponsible.”

A House committee on Wednesday took a bill to permit the Sunday sales of beer at the new minor league Braves stadium in Gwinnett, and attached language to permit local referendums on the Sunday sale of beer and wine in grocery and convenience stores.

Here’s where the governor explains why Sunday sales are a bad thing.

Perdue said the House action “jeopardizes” what he called an economic development matter for Gwinnett.

But there’s more. Listen to this clip.

Says the governor:

“We live in a republic, and the people of Georgia send us here to make decisions. I’m very concerned about a lot of the efforts I hear this year, about ‘Well, we’ll just let people vote on it.’ I mean, do we want to let the people vote to choose to allow prostitution and those kinds of things? Where are we going to draw the line?”

If you’re a supporter of the Legislature’s effort to create a sales tax for transportation — through regional referendums — that kind of thinking from the governor must give you pause.

As for the ad valorem tax on vehicles, which the House voted to eliminate, Perdue said this:

“People love to vote for tax cuts. It’s much tougher to balance a budget, and talk about where those tax cuts come from. I think the people of Georgia get the joke. They want infrastructure, they want education. They want government to work for them,” the governor said. “I kind of liken it to the Wright brothers jumping off of Kitty Hawk and designing an airplane on the way down.”

For the record, we’ve been to Kitty Hawk. It’s not a cliff. You can’t jump off it. Unless the governor was talking about the aircraft carrier. In which case the entire metaphor collapses.

Many thanks to Dick Pettys of InsiderAdvantage for helping us out on the audio.

Sonny Perdue’s opposition to allowing local communities a vote on Sunday beer and wine sales clearly demonstrates the essential anti-Americanism of the Christian right. These authoritarians insist on legally forcing all citizens to follow their religious beliefs, no matter how ridiculous or bizarre they appear to intelligent human beings. The only cure for this form of cultural terrorism is to send these Bible-thumping, fundamentalist scoundrals packing on election day.

“Comrades,” he said, “I trust that every animal here appreciates the sacrifice that Comrade Napoleon has made in taking this extra labour upon himself. Do not imagine, comrades, that leadership is a pleasure! On the contrary, it is a deep and heavy responsibility. No one believes more firmly than Comrade Napoleon that all animals are equal. He would be only too happy to let you make your decisions for yourselves. But sometimes you might make the wrong decisions, comrades, and then where should we be? Suppose you had decided to follow Snowball, with his moonshine of windmills–Snowball, who, as we now know, was no better than a criminal?”

Governor Purdue, Please listen to the people of Georgia and give us the right to vote for Sunday sales. We are one of only three states in the Nation who prohibit Sunday sales of alcohol. I don’t count this as a good thing. It makes us appear to be backward. Please refrain from allowing your personal religious or moral beliefs stand in the way of the differing beliefs of your constituents. Let us decide. Is that not what a democracy is?

Many years ago I lived in a state that went through the allowing Sunday sales bit. This is like reliving history.I have heard all this rhetoric before.I could write the whole script. The bottom line is that once Sunday sale are allowed, nothing happens.Life simply goes on,on a day to day basis. There are no lines of people demanding beer.It simply looks like Monday,or Thursday.Church attendance does not fall off.The Devil doesn’t carouse in the streets.Nothing happens,Sonny.Nothing.

Legalize prostitution - that way millions of Georgia mothers will stop being lawbreakers.

Let’s face it, our state is a state full of drunks and w*******, always has been, always will be.

You know what? We SHOULD be allowed to vote on whether or not to make prostitution legal (who cares about which day).

That way professional sex workers can unionize or pay taxes and start getting health benefits and going to conferences, etc, and prevent the spread of disease.

Oooo, sex is baaad. But only if you’re a woman. If you’re a man, it’s not bad. You just have to find a bad woman who will do it with you.

Hey, Sonny….so for the Sunday sales bill, “it’s the wrong thing to do, and the wrong time to do it.”

Hey, dumbice……if you truly believe “it’s the wrong thing to do”, then you’d also believe there WOULD BE NO “RIGHT” TIME TO DO IT!

STFU, get your hands out of the pockets of your liquor store lobby buddies and sign the MF bill, you PUTZ!

When I last checked, “Gubner”, we live in a D-E-M-O-C-R-A-C-Y, which means that people can vote on whatever they damn well please. They voted your lazy a* in, didn’t they?

Your personal beliefs are inconsequential in this matter - the will of the people should always prevail. If that deviates from your personal convictions, then you suck it up and deal with it. You are a PUBLIC SERVANT, so act like one! Or does that conflict with your beliefs as well?

Check again, Idiocy. We live in a R-E-P-U-B-L-I-C!!! We are a nation based on laws rather than the mood of the masses.

As for the topic, I can live with or witout Sunday sales. Been buying it on Saturday for years and haven’t had a problem getting a drink on Sunday.

Couple of points. Government at any level is very wasteful and always strives for more power. We elect our officials with the understanding they are to balance budgets and in doing so, make tough choices by prioritizing. So I have a problem with my fellow Republican Sonny declaring we are putting him in a tough position. Yep, do your job. Cut what isn’t necessary, improve the efficiency and productivity of the average state and local gov worker and champion lower taxes so my money can then stimulate the economy and attract more business. I am not working to support the life styles of those on government payroll. Trust me, my customers are not concerned about my welfare. I have to remain lean to be competitive. Stop cradle to grave mentality, restructure government employee benefits and retirement (they are better than mine, and I am receptive to reality so… I work more) and institute some much needed sanity. Sonny, if you read this, please get busy! And, get over the no alcohol on Sunday thing. I’m a Christian too but good grief, where is the logic in your stubbornness? One more thing. Sonny is right on one issue. We live under a republic, not a democracy. If you think otherwise, you most likely attended a public school. There are very good reasons this country modeled itself after the republic construct.

Some need a civics lesson.

We live in a r-e-p-u-b-l-i-c - not a democracy. 1/2 of the founding fathers were terrified of a true democracy as it introduces the potential for mob rule. The compromise was to elect representatives to filter ideas and set an orderly process to change laws.

That said, any attempt to equate Sunday sales of a leagl product to prostitution is ludicrous. As several have pointed out - the legality issue has been decided. This is simply a tilt to tradition.

The funniest thing though is the virtiol and name-calling offered by those who disagree with them on this issue - towards those who disagree. Apparently, you’re a backward-thinking, moron if you hold a different opinion on the issue, so name-calling is appropriate. Yep - very enlightened.

I heard years ago a democracy equates to two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner. Those of you public schooled leftists could actually benefit from an education more so than from a liberal indoctrination. Spend some time to read the Constitution, learn about our founding fathers and understand history as it was; not as it’s being rewritten. Our failed Ga school system, as governed by 130 years of demo control, has yielded a pathetic crop of …….citizens.

I have a solution to our idiotic, superstitious governor problem…let’s all chip in and buy him a hooker ! Best case, he’ll lighten up, allow sunday sales and legalize prostitution…worst case, he’ll resign in disgrace, start his own bible thumping church and then be caught molesting members of the youth group.

Legislate prostitution! Hey, there you go! That will not only bring some much-needed revenue into the state at a time of grave economic trouble, but it will actually get rid of the strip clubs and adult bookstores as well! After all, why would people want to waste money on substitutes when they can have the real thing?

Great idea Sonny! Thanks for bringing it up. Let’s git’er done!

Isn’t it interesting that the more steadfast the stance a politician has, the bigger the hypocritical revelation? New York lost its governor because his morals were proven to be a scam. I’m sure people here in Georgia remember former state Attorney General Mike Bowers and his great revelation ten years back. Do the people who are pushing for keeping the Sunday ban REALLY want to see how far things will get? I can’t wait to see what sort of hypocrisy somes out of this!
