Cardwell to Jones: Just you and me — name the time and place

We weren’t there, but it seems as if Dale Cardwell is out to turn the Democratic race for U.S. Senate into a two-man race, between him and DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones.

At Saturday night’s DeKalb County Democratic party banquet, Cardwell challenged Jones to a series of one-on-one debates. Mano a mano. Never mind those three other candidates.

The first question Cardwell would have Jones explain? Why the Democrat voted twice for George W. Bush. In his press release, Cardwell included as evidence this interview of Jones on the “Kudzu Vine” podcast of July 22, 2007.

Cardwell says the relevant portion is at the 39:45 minute mark. (We checked. Jones said he didn’t like Al Gore in 2000 because Gore “ran away from Bill Clinton” and ignored the South. In 2004, Jones said he voted for Bush because “John Kerry was a blue-blood and he didn’t understand Georgia.”)

“Jones’ record is full of secrecy, backroom deals, personal profit and favors to politically connected insiders,” Cardwell said. Given an attack of that nature, you have to consider the DeKalb County executive the man to beat. So far.

More on Democrats and the U.S. Senate race this evening.

Appartently Cardwell’s assumption is based upon the wrong premise. Because of his mess-ups Jones has serious trouble in the Black community around this state. A good portion of that electorate is disappointed in the way he has conducted himself. The “historical significance factor” will not play as well for Vernon Jones as it did for Obama. While limited exposure and finances are issues for Cardwell, there is nothing to be gained from engaging Jones.

Among other things, Carwell would be well advised to state his positions on and suggestions for addressing the wallet woes issues dominating the daily thoughts of Georgians.

RJ: Assumptions are premises. Only conclusions can be based on premises, or assumptions.

Just a point of order. Blog on, my fine friend.

Jones won’t debate Cardwell because the call-ins, never mind the issues of the debate, will show up his questionable deals, antics, and accusations against him

Jones won’t debate Cardwell because he knows the call-ins will uncover his history of deals, rape accusations, discrimination in firing white employees, etc, etc.

Thanks Blogfather…you are absolutely correct. It was meant as a play on words but upon reflection, a poor choice.

Conservatism is dead. Sen Craig sounded taps, with his flag at half mast.

I think Snuggles should agree to the debate…but only if Dale will climb back up on the Corey tower. Dale told us that “his message was heard by Georgians” when he scurried down the pole after a week up there (and due to a rain forcast). If it worked so well last time, let’s do it again!

Vernon could get a mega-phone and climb up on top of the Sloppy Floyd building for an debate that would be heard round the world (according to Dale’s logic).

Franklin Randolph Jr. could have his mom drive him down there and he could try to get in on the action, if the two front runners would let him.

Just like politics, too much agreement in the bloging sphere is not necessarily good for healthy dialogue. Nonetheless, I agree with you again Blogfather.

While the evidence suggest that conservatism has been dead for quite some time, branding efforts (liberal v.conservatism)continue as we see too many times in these blogs.

Our federal deficits have come from three Republican presidents - Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush. The often liberal branded President Bill Clinton balanced the budget for the first time in decades.

The half-billion dollars per day spent on oil wars for the last six years have netted us a still at large Osama bin Laden and a 1,000-fold increase in the number of terrorists.

The lack of an intelligent conservative energy policy sees $3 billion per day drained from our economy to overseas interests. Is it coincidence that the record profits of the five largest oil companies - $670 billion over the past five years have emerged under a “conservative” President Bush?

Conservatives have spent like drunken sailors on shore leave, leaving the debt to our children. Compare the profits of many America’s largest corporations with the lost of jobs, our struggling hospitals and school systems and the point becomes obvious.

In the face of these and more facts that counter the claims of so called conservatives the uninformed persist with their branding efforts.
