Reed, the Post and a baseless GOP nominee

Sometimes you stand so close to history that you can’t see it happening. These two paragraphs stand out in today’s Washington Post, in a Ruth Marcus column:

It’s hard to recall a presidential nominee so at odds with his party’s base. “This is the first time in 32 years that anybody’s won the Republican nomination without support from conservatives and evangelical voters in the primaries,” former Christian Coalition head Ralph Reed said before [John] McCain’s appearance at the Omni Shoreham.

Reed may have reason to dislike McCain — the senator’s probe into the dealings of lobbyist Jack Abramoff showed him in none too flattering a light — but it is hard to disagree with his analysis.

For those of you who are old enough you may remember republicans like Nelson Rockerfeller and Barry Goldwater. There was a day not too long ago when republicanism meant smaller more efficient government (hence the lower taxes), government staying the hell out of peoples private lives, respecting peoples spirituality when it was other than yours, and taking reponsibilty for ones actions and mistakes; Nixon’s resignation is an example. For the past decade the above types were still around but were overshadowed by the more extremeist types from the moral majority and someone say like the Bob Jones kids. It just may be the republican party is coming full circle and is getting back to its old self of liberty, freedom, and prosperity.

I just watched Dr. Ron Paul’s speech yesterday at CPAC. THAT is a TRUE conservative.

Jim and Bob, how about you write up an entry about THAT speech?

Of course Reed hates McCain. Reed represents the dying religious-extremist faction that controlled the GOP for more than two decades.

Now that a moderate influence is sweeping the country and the radical right is being tossed aside, Reed and his religious whackos are angry. And hurt. And pouting.

It’s a great time to be a REAL American!

Roy:

McCain is not a ‘liberty, freedom, and prosperity’ conservative.

McCain-FEINGOLD LIMITED freedom.

McCain-KENNEDY LIMITED liberty.

copyleft and cheap seats, you marxist morons don’t understand what conservatism is all about. People like W. have ruined conservatism. Had it not been for W’s understanding of islamofascism you would have seen conservatives get angry. We are already angry with him and McCain over immigration. People like you are busy living in a comic book fantasy of fuzzy unicorns. Make fun of Christianity as long as you want but remember that Christianity will be here long after you are gone. Remember what Nietzsche said. “God is dead” but now it is reversed. Nietzsche is dead. Liberals have nothing but despair and pessimism because your lives are full of hate. Yes, Reagan was the truest of conservatism and moderates never got anything accomplished. What the term moderate really means is “whatever the democrats want.”

Ironic name, “the truth,” since I’ve seen you lie so many times on so many blogs.

I haven’t seen anyone here mocking Christianity—just the nutjobs on the religious right, which have as much in common with Jesus as they do with walnuts.

Their time is done, and both secular and truly Christian Americans breathe a welcome sigh of relief at their demise.

I don’t support religious extremism in any form because I truly love the principles upon which this country was founded and I believe in democracy.

It doesn’t matter at all which religion any group of extremists embrace - it’s religious extremism whenever you try to force a set of religious beliefs upon a free people.

Copyleft, You probably know about as much about Christianity as I do about being a suicide bomber. NOTHING! I have no idea what you mean by religious right wing fanatics. The only religious fanatics I can think of are the ones that fly planes in to buildings. What have christians done? If you bring up the crusades then you are retarded. I have no idea what you mean by “lying.” Liberals always use the “liar and nazi” excuse when they themselves are caught. Meaning you! Please tell me who TRUE christians are. Are they the ones that welcome gay marriage and tolerate everyone? Like Catholics and Episcopals?

Religious Right Wing Fanatic, (n.) 1) A person who thinks the Constitution should be Amended according to their interpretation of God’s wishes; 2) A person who votes for or otherwise supports such a candidate. See Huckabee, Republicans, 700 Club Drones.

Gay marriage? How about divorce?

Why are evangelicals allowed to welcome divorce? Seems to me Jesus had plenty to say on that.

Please we want the truth. Why are their no amendments outlawing divorce?

Why do you evangelicals never bring up divorce? Its in the Bible.

It does add accuracy, doesn’t it? Because their God, if he returned to earth today, would vote/think exactly like themselves.

Aquagirl, Let me get this straight. 700 club is extreme but islam is perfect? Wow, all of you marxist liberals are the nut jobs. Reality Check, yes divorce is a major problem. Who said that evangelicals welcome divorce? You guys are a bunch of nuts. You’re p** because the democrat party is the party of felons, baby killers and communist. I love it when liberals tell christians how to be christians when liberals never read the Bible. Fact is, non of us are perfect but I’d rather be a right wing born again christian than in a self-loathing liberal marxist global warming cult.

Reality Check, You make some good points about divorce. I have never been to a church that didn’t care about divorce. Divorce is terrible. Divorced women and men should be cared for but divorce should always be a last resort. I love it that you say evangelicals NEVER bring up divorce. Do you go to an evangelical church or are you listening to idiot liberals who have never set foot in a church and therefore make up nonsense?

Wow, RW! I mean, um “the truth!” That was amazing the way you disproved your moniker. YOU are the only person who mentioned Islam on this board today, yet you put the words in Aquagirl’s mouth and demanded that she eat them! Shame shame shame… even for you!

Thanks, JK, but the only thing I had for lunch was a turkey wrap.

Truth (and that’s a loose term) why did you bring up Islam? Random synapse connection?

And don’t think we didn’t notice your diatribe was constructed for one reason—-to avoid answering the question “why do right-wing nutjobs think we should have Constitutional Amendments or other forms of legal constraints on what they see as select nonbiblical behaviors?”

If you wave around an anti-gay marriage amendment, these crazies will claim if we don’t back it, our Country will collapse. They’ll reject politicians who won’t support laws banning abortion. They’ll be happy to connect religion to politics for their pet peeves.

Yet, a behavior specifically discussed by Jesus, divorce (with remarriage) is never even mentioned for legislation. Where are all these God-fearing folk calling their legislators? Why should we not support Jesus with the law of the land, if that’s what you’re shooting for?

Go ahead, Truth, ‘cause you’ll either answer this question (which would impress me, I’ve never heard a real answer) or you’ll go on a rant and make yourself look stupid. It’s a win-win for me.

What would Jesus do? In more instances than one has time to list, when todays faux christians do exactly the polar opposite of what Jesus would do, I for one contend that they are not true christians.
