Romney suspends, but may be angling as the voice of the GOP’s culture wing
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The instant analysis of Mitt Romney’s suspension of his Republican campaign for president is focusing on Romney’s citation of the war in Iraq as his reason for quitting.
Emphasizing the primary platform plank of John McCain — now the presumptive Republican nominee — is an implicit endorsement, pundits quickly said.
And some of that’s true.
“If I fight on in my campaign all the way to the convention, I’d forestall the launch of a national campaign. And frankly I’d be making it easier for Senator Clinton or Obama to win,” Romney said.
But something else might be happening, too.
We may be seeing the start of a second campaign — a fight between Romney and Mike Huckabee, a former Southern Baptist preacher now the undisputed No. 2 Republican remaining in the race, to become the guardian of social conservative values within the GOP.
In a 22-minute speech in Washington this afternoon, Romney just may have been pitching himself as the liaison between McCain and the GOP’s most conservative elements.
Romney spent the first two-thirds of his address emphasizing very non-McCain-like topics. And didn’t mention McCain’s until the last three minutes.
“I’m convinced that unless America changes course, we could become the France of the 21st century,” Romney said.
He spoke of a “culture-killing” dependence on welfare, attacks on faith and religion, the “celebration of pornography, and repeated his support for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to ban gay marriage.
“Europe is facing a demographic disaster. that’s the inevitable product of weakened faith in the Creator, failed families, disrespect for the sanctity of human life, and eroded morality,” Romney said.
This was his money line:
“Some reason that culture is merely an accessory to American vitality. We know that it’s the source of our strength.
“And we will not be dissuaded by the snickers and knowing glances while we stand up for family values and morality and culture.”

And just yesterday, Hannity was whining about how Huckabee needed to drop out because HE was “splitting the conservative vote.”
Ahh, good ol’ Hannity… has he ever been right about anything?

I am a die hard Republican - the thing is McCain is not a Republican. He is a political cross-dresser at best. He has been promoted by the media while other candidates have not been. The media has a huge influence in this country and it is amazing that smart people don’t think the media has their own agenda, they very clearly do. In addition those “very conservative newspapers” that supported him in Massachusetts are the furthest thing from conservative. They among other mainstream media sources have had a huge part in downplaying his unpopularity among Republican’s, also in not reporting, failing or forgetting to report everything that he has done to vote against Republican’s.
On the litmus test issues of our time, only partially excluding Iraq, McCain is a liberal.
— He excoriated Samuel Alito as too “conservative.”
— He promoted amnesty for 20 million illegal immigrants.
— He abridged citizens’ free speech (in favor of the media) with McCain-Feingold.
Now when someone from his camp was asked why they think he is so unpopular among Republican’s they state that it is because he is so outspoken, and such a maverick. As far as a definition, maverick by the way is given to someone who is unpredictable… and that is not what Republican’s want in a representative. The truth is if he was outspoken on REPUBLICAN issues they would love him. Democrats love him as the Republican candidate because he shares their view. When Bill Clinton was asked earlier in the race, when McCain first started making a comeback what he thought the debates would be like between Hillary and McCain if they ended up being the nominee’s… Bill Clinton said “Boring because they agree on so many issues”
McCain wanted to switch from the GOP to the Democratic party just a few short years ago! He supports the rights of people sneaking over the border! He wants Amnesty! If pushed he said “Alright I’ll give them the damn fence” He is a war hero, but that was also 40 years ago! Bush has allowed McCain to happen. Bush has also because of his extreme tolerence of illegals made the Republican party look bad. It is not that I want the country to go down the toilet in the next four years, the fact is IT IS GOING DOWN THE TOILET NO MATTER WHAT - And when it does I don’t want it going down the toilet on a Republican’s (albeit Political Cross-dresser that he is) Let it go down the toilet on the Democrat’s watch… This is the only chance we have of getting a REAL Republican candidate in the White house next time. If we support McCain now - which is what he expects - it is like telling the rest of our generation that this is the Republican party and also that you can be a Republican cross dresser and we’ll put up with it because we have no other choice. The only clear choice in this strategy is Hillary. If Obama gets the White House and does not succeed they will forgive him, he needs time to adjust, he has no experience, he has never even been in charge of anyone in any sort of managerial position before. We need Hillary - to fight against this fake Republican party that has surfaced - to give us time to re-establish the Republican party - to let McCain know that we do have a choice -
America needs to wake up and stop believing everything the media tells them!!!!

Romney is really pathetic - after being a liberal governor of Massachusetts he’s now trying to position himself as the moral crusader of the far right. He needs to retreat into his cocoon of wealth and never again try to impose himself and his ever changing beliefs on the real world. Mitt - please GO AWAY!!!

Today’s “Republicans” are fools. They don’t even know what they stand for. Small government, low taxes, lots of personal freedom? Not our Republicans! How about big brother, tax cuts for corporations, and spending, yes, lots of spending. That’s what today’s “Republican party” is all about.
There is one man who hasn’t lost his way. Like the idea of lower taxes? Ron Paul is ready to abolish the IRS, the Federal Reserve, and return our currency to a gold standard. How will our huge government function without our illegally collected income taxes? Simple, it won’t be a huge government - it will be a small, constitutionally limited government. I was a democrat, so I don’t know, am I sounding Republican here?
America became the most prosperous nation on Earth through low taxes and a limited government. Now, if we leave the current Republicans OR Democrats to continue on this failed course of action it’ll cost 40 bucks to buy a bottle of water.
Big government doesn’t work - the FDA can’t protect people from harmful food or drugs, Social Security is going to be broke soon, government managed healthcare is a disaster, FEMA - need I go on?
Ron Paul can save the GOP. Ron Paul will MOP THE FLOOR with either Hillary or Barak. But if he isn’t their choice then, ironically, the GOP will disappear just like the Whigs - the very party their fresh ideas challenged and were successful against.
If you love America and the Constitution it was founded on, you owe it to your soul to go check out Dr. Paul.

I am sorry to see Mitt get out of the race. I am even more dismayed that we as a party don’t get it. I hope we do before it is to late. I think Mitt needed to vocalize more about what he wanted to do that was right. We needed him to tell us about fiscal responsibility, supporting our troops with what they need to finish the job right. Mitt seemed to be a little out of his element out there in the big time. McCain’s run that race before and has some experience doing it. I only hope he is smart enough to pick Romney for V.P. and give him the work to do. Mitt’s no afraid of some hard work, it is what he is about. He seems to have been given the tough jobs and comes out on top. We need someone like him to run the country with some business sense where responsibility and accountability matter. McCain’s been in Washington for most of my life and I don’t see what he has done to make this place any better, and now he is becoming our front man. We are sending him back to Washington for more of what we are all wanting a change from.
Enough about Ron Paul, maybe he just can add but 3% here and there just isn’t getting it done either.

The problem Mitt Romney could not overcome in my opinion is that he is a Mormon. The only politically correct bigotry left in the U.S. is Mormon-bashing. If anyone says anything derogatory about another person based on race, gender, sexual orientation, political leanings, or even criminal history, it is simply an intolerable offence. But if the person happens to believe in the LDS faith, it’s open season!!! I can’t even begin to count the number of blogs I have read that say everything from ‘Mormons are not Christians’ to ‘Mormons are the incarnation of Satan himself.’ I wonder if those responsible for these blogs even know any Mormons personally…. but I digress.
Anyway, regardless I don’t feel like there is a good candidate left in the race. Romney would have been great for the economy, (he took the Salt Lake Olympics that were rocked by scandal and severely in debt, turned it around and made a tidy profit for Utah). Why couldn’t so many people see past his faith to his many other qualities and let him do that for our country? It boggles the mind!!!! Now who am I going to vote for? Hillary?? She already had her two terms! Obama? I can’t fathom it! McCain? We’ve seen that he will do unethical things to get elected (West Virginia/Huckabee deal.) So who’s left? Maybe I’ll vote for a Jehovah’s Witness!

Cherl - others - are right. Romney was the only candidate that knew anything about fiscal matters. Huckabee is a religious bigot who cant win conservatives outside of the bible belt. We need someone like Mitt who could find votes in other places. Look at the votes in other states outside the deep south— where was Huckabee… right down there with Ron Paul. ITs too bad about Mitt Romney but I hope to see him in 2012 rather than VP because McCain is back handed and doesnt deserve to get the credit for the good Romney would do for him and this country.

The fact that Mr. Romney is Mormon is not why he failed. He failed because (1) many people didn’t trust him; and (2) he couldn’t win in the South—a must for a Republican nominee.
I don’t agree with the name-calling against him, nor the name-calling against Huckabee or McCain.
If everything Mr. Romney said during this campaign were true, he would indeed have been a great conservative and would have been successful. The problem, honestly, is that his record (including very recent things he has done) is too much completely opposite of what he has been saying for people to trust him. I think that’s the real reason why he lost. I wish him well, and I will pray for him. But I am relieved that he is out of the race because this country desperately needs a president who truly will stand up without compromise for the sanctity of life and the sanctity of marriage—the two pillars of our nation.
It is primarily for that reason that I think Gov. Huckabee’s presence in this race is a blessing, and why I will vote for him.

Basically, all the RINOS can line up behind McCain proposals without looking like they are siding with DEMs. If the Hillary offered up an identical proposal they would have to fight it without looking like sellouts. DO NOT VOTE for McCain he will use the moderate/independents to deny conseratives and will try to build the REPUBLICAN party with those same people and crowd out the conservatives. Do not ever get in the way of that very Great American, Sean Hannity. He is not only a good man but in many ways inspired.
Romney is dropping out because he has better things to do than get muddied with the corruptions of the McCain campaign and his Democratic and Liberal supporters. He cannot tell you all he knows about these individuals because it would not be right, it would make him more like them.
The writer that declares McCain a non Republican is correct. Go to UTube and watch the videos about what the War Veterans have to say about the catering McCain did to the enemy. Good men, true men don’t like him. Sorry to say, I once did until I did a little research on my own.
Huckabee…lots to say about that, but can you imagine the laughs that name alone will draw from the rest of the world? The name alone says plenty. Will he play a banjo on the front porch of the White House if he ends up there? Maybe he’ll have a barrel of pickles next to him in a bench.
And incidentally, do you all realize that if Hillary is elected, chooses Bill for Vice President and something happens to her that Bill could legally be serving a third term?? Think about it! And if Obama is elected….well, we’re in deeper trouble than all of the above.
All of you sweet and quiet Repuplicans and Conservatives that stayed home and did not vote will have a grave price to pay for sitting in your comfortable places when you once had a voice. Do you know the meaning of the term complacency? Heaven help you for avoiding the obvious.

Washington “needs to be fixed” as everyone is saying. Yea it does.
But what “needs to be fixed” is the Republican National Party and their asinine method of nominating a candidate. Caucus’s, winner take all primaries, delegates, totally “Super Delegates”, catering to the power brokers of the Party, are the most corrupt, stupid, arrogant, and unfair way to select a candidate.
Primaries on different days, the press reporting eastern states results before the western states have even finished voting, exit polling, etc does not have anything vaguely describing a Democratic process.
All of this stuff is 19th Century b******, designed that way because of lack of ability to communicate except by horse and buggy.
If anything needs fixing, it is the whole voting process in the United States. Including doing away with the electoral college, another ancient, non-Democratic idea.

This blog just reemphasizes that Ann Coulter isn’t the only idiot out there. Even if you disagree with McCain on all other issues, there are two overarching reasons to vote for him if you are truly a conservative: 1) he gets the war on Islamic terrorism and will not cut and run, and 2) the next president will undoubtedly appoint at least 2 Supreme Court justices. As for him “excoriating” Alito - he voted to confirm him, just like he voted to confirm all the other conservatives. When did we vote and make those litmus test issues? If you are so stupid as to think as Ann Coulter does, then enjoy the next 8 years under Clinton/Obama. You will deserve it.

It is a sad day for the country! Romney would have been absolutely the most dignified, smart, moral, conservative person to run the White House. I think he has more class in his little finger than McCain and Huckabee combined. Like he said, its not all about him. He is looking at the good of the country and the republican values we hold so dear. I know we have not seen the last of Romney yet and I for one will be anxiously waiting for 2012 when I think his time will come. The country will be so ready for his wisdom and values by that time that he will breeze to the nomination. My only wish at this time would be for McCain to please NOT pick Huckabee as VP! He has hurt a lot of feelings with his religously bigoted comments about Mormonism and does not deserve to help represent our country. I think it would hurt Mccains chances in uniting the party because of the back door deals many saw him do with Huckabee and don’t think that is very ethical. Vote for Mitt Romney in 2012!

It is a sad day in American politics. The true reality is that the typical American has no desire to educate himself/herself on the issues involved in a campaign. Too many Americans take political advice from the New York Times, Boston Herald and the rest of the liberal media outlets who have a strong dislike for America. Mitt Romney was the only person in this race who could accurately and articulately provide a conservative American viewpoint. Unfortunately the only chance we now have is to let the Democrats take the white house in November (McCain is really a Democrat anyway and therefore we are not giving up anything by not having him win in November) and wait 4 years for America to realize the mistake it has made. By then the country should be ready to move back to a more conservative approach and hopefully Romney will be waiting in the wings

Without disclosing my political loyalties and only looking at the situation objectively, I would like to make the following comment.
ThomasJC, you wrote the following, “The fact that Mr. Romney is Mormon is not why he failed. He failed because (1) many people didn’t trust him; and (2) he couldn’t win in the South”.
I agree with your first reason but will forgo a discussion on why so that I can discuss your second reason. I respectfully contend that one of the reasons Gov. Romney did not win in the South is because of his Mormon faith. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints living in the South and am often astonished at how misunderstood my religion is in this part of the country.
If Gov. Romney was not competing with a Baptist preacher he would have had a good chance of taking the South. But with Gov. Huckabee in the equation, Romney had a huge obstacle to overcome. Looking at the situation objectively, Romney’s failure can in part be attributed to his faith.

It amazes me that some will talk about Evangelicals as Bigots and hate mongers claiming that Mormons are the last group it is OK to be opposed to (as you call evengelicals bigoted and hatemongering…does anyone else see the IRONY here…ANYONE? ANTONE?).
After the Iowa Caususes Commentator Michael Medved drew attention to some VERY interesting stats coming out of the caususes. You can read his comments and review the stats yourself here.
http://michaelmedved.townhall.com/blog/g/75f7897d-1fb4-4a2f-9177-32b8ee72fe17
Sadly, there is much greater animus towards evengelicals than there is toward mormons, atheists, or any other group you’d like to single out in this nation right now.
Here is the truth…Huckabee will NEVER be president BECAUSE he is an EVANGELICAL. If he was a millionaire business-man with all else being the same, Rush, Hannity, Coulter and all of you very clear minded, un-bigoted, rational conservatives would rally behind his cause.
NOW, as for myself, the BIGOTED, Hate-mongering, EVANGELICAL that I am will just shut up and get to the back fo the REPUBLICAN party where I belong where you can find me the next time you need my vote.

You better believe that Romney’s disappointing results are all about his faith. Don’t kid yourself. Mike Huckabee and his network of hypocritical, bigoted evangelicals doomed his candidacy from the start. I know that he spread the word to all of his preacher buddies to keep this Mormon for becoming president. They are all idiots! Mitt Romney is clearly head and shoulders above either McCain or Hickabee. What a joke those two are. I will now not be able to vote in November for a Repuclican. I’m a die-hard Huckabee supporter. He isn’t afraid to share what he believes in. Mormonism isn’t going to get you to heaven. Call it bigotry if that’s what helps you sleep through the night, but he wouldn’t be doing his job as a follower of Christ if he didn’t expel the dilusions of the Mormon cult. And yes, it is a cult. There is only one way to get to Heaven and it isn’t through Joseph Smith or the Book of Mormon. Jesus Christ is the only way to Heaven and at the rate America is going, you’re going to go to one of two places sooner rather than later.

I truly hope those thinking of bolting the party rethink this completely. This is not 1996 or any earlier campaign. Those willing to just give up on voting for the nominee must keep in mind that we are at war with extremism. We have economic issues facing our nation. This is not exactly just a ‘typical’ period in US politics. You can take a “cut and run” approach thinking we can just cut our losses and come back and try again in 2012 0r 2016. But if you truly are principled in your beliefs, are you willing to put the country in the hands of Hillary Clinton or Obama for 4-8 years? Again, in 1996, that thought may have been more reasonable (if that IS even reasonable). But think on this. We are still dealing with Iraq and Afghanistan. Helping Hillary/Obama means those in uniform will NOT complete their mission. Do you wish to take this approach to those in uniform? Think of the courts as well. Odds are even a single term of a Democrat will give them at least one seat to confirm to the SCOTUS. That can impact decisions for at least 2 decades. Think guns, speech, life, redistricting, etc. Think of lower courts as well. Think eocnomics. Think minimum wage. Think protectionism. Think regulations. Think taxes. Think jobs. Lastly, think on this. To those who think bolting the party and cutting so called losses is the proper way to go, think do you really want to be complacent in handing the keys of ALL THREE branches of government over to the Democrats? Do you want to hand this country over to a party that will strip every aspect of conservative, strict constructionist concepts currently in place? Do you want to give them at least 4 years only to set us back 20 years in court decisions and regulatory and economic effects? This is NOT just some little 4 years of Clinton or Obama just looking good for the cameras. This is 4 - in effect 20 years of liberal principles digging into the depths of policy. Hillary/Obama, Pelosi, and Reid taking control of the third branch of government and controlling our military and national security along with how we deal with Iran, Syria, North Korea, al Qaeda, the Taliban, Hamas, Hizbollah, etc. Just remember that a RISK of 4 years in the other direction has more than 4 years effect on our nation. The Dems on here will laugh at me for taking this route but those on the Right who think laying low and waiting is smart, it truly amounts to cut and run. Those thinking these thoughts do not realize that there are a completely different set of ends that do NOT justify these means.

Romney’s exit = Democrat President. Clearly Romney recognizes that as a “republican” candidate, McCain is unelectable. He sees that the republican party is going to be too slow on the take this time around and he is getting out to allow them to fail miserably to make his point. This actully proves that he is an intelligent man with foresight and purpose instead of an emotional rube like Huckabee who just blindly charges ahead with tremendous prejudice and without regard to the damage he is doing to his own cause. McCain and Huckabee will lose huge in the general election and Mitt will be ready in 2012 to come back and clean up whatever mess Hillary has made of our country. Hopefully by then the republican party will get their act together and endorse him fully from day one.

To Vote or Not…….Another apology to Shakespeare. The current state of conservative affairs begs for a look at this key issue from the eyes of Hamlet!
To VOTE or not to VOTE, that is the question; Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind of conservative republicans to suffer under pretended conservative leadership, possessed of hastily adopted values, barely tolerable platforms and very short memories of the past, Or to express disgust at a party awash in compromise, by sitting out the vote, and allowing the landslide victory of a foe, who though a foe is a foe both heart and soul, without pretense as to what their moral views are. To boycott, yes, to abandon the party to its fate, if only for a time. To gloat …To see conservatives, who are no conservatives, trounced by Democrats. Democrats? Aye, there’s the rub, For in that boycott, and from that gloat, may rise with foul stench, four years of Clintonian rule, whoever is nominated to presided. Four years, Oh……perish the thought! Such self-caused horror must give us pause. Alas, compromise, a dirty yet familiar friend.
Would not four years of pretended conservative rule, be far more to be desired then equal time of liberal anarchy? Perchance, but then what of the bogs of sticky mud, found oft on the roads to compromise! What next? How far? How long? How liberal the next pretended conservative? When does one say enough!!!!! Be we conservatives in name only. Shall we be, and act the part, of the very thing we now despise to support, yet fear to abandon. Does conscience truly make cowards of us all? Shall we support the lesser evil, til it grows to be the greater. No, four years is long indeed, more so when under liberal rule, yet not so long as hell suffered by conscience seared closed, forever blotted out by compromise.
And to Vote, what is to vote but to express one’s true ideals. Would not a refusal to exercise such right, be vote itself, a firm expression of lines one will not cross, principles one will not set aside, be the inevitable victor ne’r so vile! Aye to vote or not to vote, that truly is the question!

Blame belongs directly on their arrogant, self-serving, drooping shoulders. No where else.

J Scott - this is a direct means to vote. Personally, the caucuses, you know the ones Romney won, are the ludicrous methods of selection. I have no issue with the primaries as they are. But I do oppose the caucuses. But that still has nothing to do with the bolting of the party. The same people on talk radio who have hammered McCain on the issues are the EXACT SAME ONES who have sat back for the past 8 years and let Bush give us big government and a greater tax burden. Rush and Hannity have no problem with Bush protecting the Department of Education and adding No Child Left Behind (of which Romney supported FYI). Take a look at the 1994 revolution and the Contract. What happened to that? The same people whining now were the ones who gave us Bush and STILL act as if he is the best. These are the same people who are telling me I should have overlooked decades of Romney acting liberal and even trying to out-liberal Ted Kennedy. Some of you were trying to tell me some guy who supported the Brady Bill, opposed abortion restrictions, gave MA gay marriage, appointed Democrats the the state courts in MA, opposed Bush tax cuts and lied about it, and even trashed Reagan was truly conservative. Sorry but McCain is the man and we need to support him. As we’ve heard before, you are either with us or with them. If you don’t mind handing over the world to terrorists and slapping the faces of those in uniform, and have no issue handing the country over to the liberal policies affecting us all for 20 years, it’s your game. Frankly, if so-called conservatives have NO problem intentionally aiding liberals to take over, I question whether these are true conservatives. If you feel this way, show us just how ‘principled’ you are and send your entire paycheck over to Hillary or Obama. Help terrorists. Open an abortion clinic. Join a union. Burn a flag and hand in your guns. No point going half-@$$ed on the issue. Go full steam.

P.S. Add me as another voice that knows that Romney’s out because he’s Mormon. And, that’s also the reason why Huckabee stayed in. He most certainly viewed having a Mormon president gasp as legitimizing Mormonism as many evangelicals feel and would never EVER vote for a Mormon any more than a KKK member would vote for Obama. Yes, that factor is very alive and well and those who don’t know that are either in denial or truly don’t know how acrimonious many evangelicals are toward Mormons.

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I like you and many others of similar faith believe that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior. It is only in and through the Lord Jesus Christ, that I find hope of eternal life and salvation. It is only the Lord Jesus Christ who is able to bridge the gap to allow me to overcome physical death and sin.
I have friends of all faiths who I deeply respect and admire. I do not presume to tell them what their Church teaches and I do not tell them how to live their life.
As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I testify to you and all who have eyes to see and ears to hear that “..salvation cometh to none such except it be through repentance and faith on the Lord Jesus Christ.” Mosiah 3: 8, 12 [This is a verse in the Book of Mormon].
Salvation does not come from Joseph Smith, Moses, Noah or any other Prophet of God. The Church is not called the Church of Joseph Smith. It is called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
I deeply respect your religion and your right to worship or not to worship as you see fit. “We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.” The 13th Article of Faith of my Church.

FYI - there are currently 16 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons)serving in the U.S. Congress.
If you don’t know much about Mormons, here are some more nuggets…
• We believe in the eternity of the soul, that God is the Father of our spirits, and that we can return to Him after death. • We believe that Jesus Christ is our personal Savior, and we try to model our lives after Him and His teachings. We commemorate Christ’s atoning sacrifice in our Sunday worship services, similar to taking communion in other churches. We accept as fellow Christians all who believe Jesus Christ to be the Son of God and the Savior of all mankind. Many Christians do not understand that we have much common ground with them. Joseph Smith taught that Jesus Christ is the core of our belief, and everything else is an appendage to it (see Elders’ Journal, July 1838, 44). The name of the Church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. • We believe the original church that Jesus established was lost and has been restored again in our day. The priesthood, the authority given to man to act in the name of God, with apostles and a prophet to lead us, has been restored as have all necessary ordinances of salvation. • We believe in and we use the Holy Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. • And we believe in the Book of Mormon and other books of scripture which support and authenticate the Bible and testify of the ministry and divinity of Christ and of God’s ongoing revelation to man. Indeed, the Book of Mormon is “Another Testament of Jesus Christ.”
Family • Mormons place particularly strong emphasis on family as the basic unit of the Church and of society. We have a deep commitment to marriage (defined as a union between one man and one woman). Polygamy, a limited practice in the early pioneer days of the Church, was discontinued in 1890, some 117 years ago. • Families and individuals, whether members of our faith or not, can attend Sunday services in our chapels. Here we worship together, instructing one another from the scriptures. • Latter-day Saint families are encouraged to hold family home evenings weekly, usually on Monday nights. This provides a regular and predictable time for parents to teach values to their children and to have fun together. We invite those not of our faith to adopt this practice with their own families. • The Church has auxiliary programs for women, youth, and children as a support to the family. These programs provide such things as religious instruction, opportunities for Christian service, sports, drama, music, and Scouting. • And there is also much focus on extended family, genealogy, and personal family history, providing young and old with a stronger sense of roots, identity, and belonging. The highest and most sacred ordinances of our faith relate to our families, both living and dead, and some of these ordinances take place in our temples. Fruits Now, even as someone begins to understand a few facts about us and comes to know us more accurately by our faith and the importance of family, it was the Savior who said “by their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20; emphasis added). A church, or any way of life, should be judged by the fruits or the results that it generates. Here are a few examples based on United States statistics. But these would be similar throughout the world among practicing Mormons (by which we mean those who attend church and the temple regularly): • One of the fruits is a longer life. Studies show that practicing Mormons are healthier and therefore live longer than the national average. In 1833 the Lord revealed to Joseph Smith the Word of Wisdom, which is the way to live in order to enjoy a long and healthy life. • Second, those who are married in and attend the temple regularly have a divorce rate far below the national and world average. • Third, we achieve an educational level that is higher than the national average. • Fourth, over 70,000 members volunteer at their own expense to serve for 18 to 24 months in humanitarian efforts, Church service assignments, and full-time missionary service throughout the world. • And fifth, we place strong emphasis on self-reliance and a solid work ethic. We encourage active involvement in our communities and in providing service to others. The Church continues to donate substantial money, goods, and services to humanitarian causes around the globe, including untold hours of labor donated by members to assist in disaster cleanup and relief.

I just love the Democrats -er, I mean defeatists already saying they’re getting ready for Mitt to run in 2012. Go ahead. Cut and run. Whine and cry and run away. Willard couldn’t do it in 2008. I guess he’ll ponder like his counterpart from MA John Kerry did and wonder if two losses is worth it all. Sorry Willard. No majority believed you truly converted (overnight I might add) to conservative principles. It takes more than speech to prove you’re conservative. Your actions clearly showed something different than your speeches. So go ahead whiners. Run away and hand us over. Or can you not even do what your candidate said and step up for the party this year.

Mormons believe that Christians - ie anyone other than Mormons in Christianity are apostates. We are heretics. How can mainline Christians work with a group of people who thinks they have incorrectly interpreted the Bible and are not within the true Church? How can Christians accept the fact that Mormon theology believes any non-Mormon Christian is a heretic?

Like I said before, the nominating system by both parties, State and National, is a disgrace, and is nothing more than a power grab by those embedded in the system.
I have been a delegate at my state three times over the past years and it is the same there. It is just a waste of time in the end, because all of the decisions have already been made. A disgrace. Period.

Becuase that’s what the US Government is - it’s a SECULAR BODY. Rational people don’t give a s** about your personal religion, or about how much you hate gays or hispanics. We only care about what’s going to make this SECULAR NATION stronger in the future.
Every damn one of you fascists who believe that the government should affirm your narrow-minded fundamentalist religious beliefs deserve to be arrested and beaten…which is EXACTLY what happens in theocratic societies to people who don’t tow the “correct” religious line.

All this angst and lamentation about McCain and the end of the Republican party…..Come ON!!! Rush Limbaugh, his contemporaries and rest of you followers are the equivalent of Nero’s party guests the night Rome burned! Well buck up ladies and gents and accept reality as “REAL” GOP is back and there is a new sheriff in town. We’re all ALL AMERICANS!! As Americans our parties are far more similar than dis-similar yet they have both managed to get every wheel in the ditch. You all are ready to throw the baby out with the bath water!
These are serious times and we need serious people from our party to find powerful ways for us all to pull together as Americans to clean this up and wright the ship before it becomes a catastrophic chapter in World history. If you cannot find a way to support McCain with your vote then perhaps you should consider another party.

Let’s be clear here, Alan…it’s not a Christian expressing his views who is being called a bigot, it’s a Fundamentalist Christian who wants to change laws so that people he disapproves of are discriminated against.
And…just what has your so-called psuedo-Muslim Black Panther said that makes you think he’s a bigot? I’m assuming that, in your obvious collosal ignorance, you’re talking about Obama.
Forget the FACTS - that Obama himself is an avowed Christian (yes, to the average uneducated right-wing moron, I’m sure having a non-Western name and family members who aren’t Christian means you are Muslim) or that Black Panthers advocated violent resistance to whites…IN THE 60S…what part of your statement actually has a basis in reality?
Possibly the same basis that “the socialists are here” does…since SOCIALISM, you moron, is an economic system in which the means of production are owned by the government.
How stupid are you?

Romney isn’t out because he’s Mormon. Romney is out because he’s inauthentic. It’s hard to trust a candidate who reinvents himself. He has no one to blame but himself and his tacticians. The real Mitt Romney might have made an excellent president. Unfortunately, all we ever saw was a facade.

Of course I do. And It wouldn’t include giving the entrenched one single more vote than a regular citizen.
1. Every state votes on the same day during the same 24 hour period. 2. One person one vote. Private ballot. 3. No exit polls. 4. States cannot divulge results until every state has tallied their votes. 5. Only previously declared registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primaries. Same for Democrats. 6. If there isn’t a majority vote (51%) to one contender, have a runoff between the two top candidates.
Is that so hard to do? Or is that too American for you?
None of this bull having Iowa or New Hampshire deciding for everyone in the United States. Maine & Hawaii voting at the same time! Or is this just way too simple and fair?
Yes, the power brokers in both parties would have a tizzi-fit. BFD

Well, it depends on your defenition of a conservative.
If by consevative you mean someone who is much more of a strict constitutionalist, civil libertarian, if it’s not in the constitution we aren’t paying for it, an isolationist, then yo you are much more likely to find your voice in somebody like Ron Paul.
If by conservative, you mean someone who claims fiscal responsibility cutting social program spending while never forgetting to bring the $$$ to their bigwig supporter calling it necessary infrastructure or capital investment, an imperialist, someone who wants to keep the government out of our lives as long as we are business people yet keep snooping into the most intimate details of what we are doing, who cuts government programs that help people but create new ones as long they benefit people who are supporters while leavng evereyone else to pay for it, someone who beliives in espousing public morality and condemning those who are doing the very things you do in private, claiming to support the troops at the same time you cut their benefits while supporting more $$$ to big deense contractors who produce shoddy/substandard goods or who don’t deliver what the taxpayers pay for with no consequences, then there are any number of people claiming to be your conservative candidate when the are simply neo-conservative, do as I say not as I do while you the taxpayer pay for it wolves in compassionate, conservatives sheeps clothing leaders.

All these comments are emotion driven. That is to be expected. Maybe it is time for people to follow Mitt Romney’s lead and think of the United States. Mitt is right about our being at “war”. We have two wars going on right now. The one that will take us down fastest is the internal war within the “family” (the United States). A house divide cannot stand very long. I bet that terrorists are loving this as well as Satan (if you believe in him, and I do). We need to humble ourselves, soften our hearts towards each other, recognize that ALL needs are not going to be met at once. We need to set aside our own “pet” agendas for the greater good. I recognize it is easy to say this and much harder to do, but for the sake of everything good and great in this country and about this country, we had better do it!
We can start by stopping the bickering and slandering of people, all people. We can start catching people doing good.(Try it, and see how much better you feel and look :). We need to look for strengths and not weaknesses. Candidates will rise to our expectations in them and also to our confidence in them. They will feel more need watch over and care for our best interests. We cannot remain greedy or envious or slothful. We must live with honor too, thus invoking that in our leadeship. Our leadership often reflects our own weaknesses as a people. It is easy to point a finger at a leader, but we seldom look at our own shortcomings. We hate to admit our weaknesses and do our best to hide them from others.
We see families breaking apart all over America and the biggest contributor to that break up is selfishness. The break up of a nation happens in a very similar way. My way is not best, your way is not best, their way is not best. We must contribute our best, allow others to contribute their best and move forward on that principle alone.

comp133xi7y, I guess you are part of the non-taxpayer, entitlement oriented audience that both democratic candidates are pandering too.
Why is is that when liberals are presented with speak that is similar to their rhetoric they start name calling. Your only defense….

Anything to get McCain out of my state of Arizona. I’m so fed up with him and his games, lies, and politics to handle our illegal immigration problem. McAmnesty is pathetic and lies for votes.
