Fallout from the DOT race: A grave matter with two meanings
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Because the vote on members of the state transportation board occurred so late on Friday, reverberations are only hitting the state Capitol today.
Most people know that state Rep. Tom Grave (R-Ranger) was stripped of his leadership positions and evicted from his state Capitol office for his refusal to support House Speaker Glenn Richardson’s failed attempt to oust Mike Evans from his spot as DOT board chairman.
But only now are they coming to realize that Graves had been running the House Ways and Means subcommittee in which Richardson’s GREAT plan now resides. And the bill to eliminate school property taxes hasn’t generated a great deal of traction.
Also, the Gainesville Times is reporting this morning that state Rep. Doug Collins (R-Gainesville) has been stripped of his Health and Human Services subcommittee chairmanship for the same reason.
“This is something I knew could possibly happen if I voted for Mike Evans,” Collins told the Times. “It’s very frustrating, but I felt the need to vote my conscience and my constituency. I made those decision based on what I felt was best for this community.”

It is interesting that the subcommittee chair over the Great Tax Plan has been stripped of his power. Glenn is in trouble, boys and girls. The Republican base is sick of this-it is a joke. Did we elect our Republicans to lead or to cow-tow to the Speaker? Way to go, Rep. Graves!

Every Republican House member needs to stand up against the kind of Gestapo tactics used to secure the Speaker’s desire to run all of state government. They need to remind the Speaker that they were elected by the constituents of their House District to hold a seat in the House Chambers. If the Speaker doesn’t start conducting himself as a statesman, rather than a bully, they need to remind him they can easily vlote themselvers a new Speaker.

The Speaker is the only true statesman in this whole matter. If standing on principle that someone like Evans who passes out bad plastic checks to buy votes in his DOT district and who runs the campaign from a state helicopter at taxpayer success is what is needed then Collins and Graves would be right. Most people have no use for a man like Evans who ran DOT in the ground for five years and buys his votes.
In the next few weeks it will surface that he gave a no bid contract for the DOT audit to an old buddy.
Saint Evans is starting to tarnish and those who supported him will look foolish

Larry the Cable Guy is a more eloquent statemen than Speaker Richardson. The DOT election had nothing to do with Mr. Evans or the state board-it had to do with a power-hungry Speaker who is destroying the Republican majority that we all worked so hard to build. Republicans can clean up our own mess, or we’ll lose the majority and the Democrats will do it for us. We need leadership instead of political posturing and personal vendettas.
