Isakson, Chambliss endorse McCain; ‘Disappointment’ reigns at Christian Alliance meeting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tension over the Republican race for president bubbled into the open on Saturday, as Georgia’s two U.S. senators endorsed John McCain — to the outrage and disappointment of many of the activists who form the party’s base.
Talk about the move by Saxby Chambliss, who is up for re-election this year, and Johnny Isakson filled the hallways at the annual winter meeting of the Georgia Christian Alliance, a gathering of religious conservatives that attracts many Republican activists.
Both senators are to appear at a 5:30 p.m. McCain rally at the Cobb Galleria.
Isakson attended the GCA meeting this morning.
“The war in Iraq — the war on terror — is to me the most important issue we face,” Isakson said afterwards, explaining why he had cast his personal vote for McCain the day before.
Isakson also mentioned McCain’s opposition to the growth of the federal budget, and uncontrolled spending through “earmarks.”
“He was strong on that before it was cool.”
Said Chambliss, in a telephone interview:
“We’re a strong military state and we need a strong commander in chief,” the senior senator said. “At the end of the day, we’ve got to rally around the fellow that can win.”
Former U.S. senator Phil Gramm of Texas, the national co-chairman of the McCain campaign, appeared before the religious group to argue that McCain’s emergence as the Republican party’s nominee on Tuesday was inevitable.
“I hope we can close ranks,” he said.
D.A. King, an illegal immigration activist and Romney supporter, walked out on Gramm when the former Texas senator defended McCain’s record on immigration.
Pat Tippett, a South Georgia activist who supports Mike Huckabee, had the harshest criticism for Isakson and Chambliss. She said they “have undermined the conservative principles of our party by embracing Senator McCain.”
Said Sadie Fields, chairman of the Georgia Christian Alliance:
“We honor both our senators and hold them in high esteem, but this is disappointing.”
Fields predicted that the impact would be felt at the grassroots level. “It just takes the winds out of their sails.”
Four Georgia congressmen who support Romney held a conference call on Saturday, in which they dismissed the endorsement of McCain by Isakson and Chambliss as an example of Senate “clubiness.”
“The Senate’s a universe of 100 people. They almost seem to be removed from their constituents. I don’t know if they sprinkle them with some sort of dust or whatever,” said U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland of Coweta County.

Too bad there wasn’t space to allow Mr. Galloway to include the fact that others in the room laughed at Gramm along with me as I walked out with extreme contempt at the point that Gramm was sent to sell: McCain would only repeat the failed amnesty of 1986 by legalizing the millions of illegals “after the border state governors cerify border security”.
Umm..yeah, that’s what we want - governors who pander to Mexico in Mexico and are elected based on how deeply they bow to the business lobby in supplying it with taxpayer subsidized black market labor.
Why not ask the Mexican government for the high sign on when its time for legalization?
MEMO to Americans: there is no intention of ever securing the border - as proof, note that the horror of 9/11 was more than six years ago…people are walking into the U.S. illegally from all over the world as you read this and the Georgia Senators are somewhere else shilling for McCain Inc.right now.
As someone who is not a member of any political party, I watch with fascination as the GOP sits on the brink of suicde by nominating open borders John ‘Amnesty-Again’ McCain.
The Swimmer Kennedy would make a good VP choice…but perhaps a tad too conservative for the McCain camp.
Any voter who forgets the McCain/ Kennedy amnesty of less than seven months ago gets exactly what will come to them.
The Ann Coulter path of resistance http://boortz.com/more/video/coulter_clinton.html is sounding quite reasonable today.

oops…typo again above, hard to concentrate while trying to remove a knife from my back…I meant to say ” Any voter who forgets the McCain/ Kennedy amnesty of less than seven months ago DESERVES exactly what will come to them.”
Also, readers should take careful note of what the Border Patrol union local in Tucson has to say about McCain…their own Senator - here http://www.local2544.us/ You must scroll down below the photos of the services of the Border Patrol Agent killed last month by an illegal alien drug smuggler - but you already know all about that tragedy from the front pages news items. Right?

D.A., who knifed you in the back? As if you mattered enough anyway to have someone do so…
Let’s face it, the Chambliss/Isakson record on immigration is clear. Hell, Chambliss and Isakson forced the border security first issue to become part of the debate. They’re not backing McCain because he is pro amnesty, which is opposite of their position. They’re backing McCain because of political opportunism and because all reports are that McCain is the kind of guy who is vindictive enough to screw over whomever wasn’t backing him during the campaign should he be elected. Definitely not a profile in courage on either part, but to be certain very smart politics and a very shrewd move by both. I’d rather have my Senators be in the game then be on the sidelines.

Jason, it is beyond time for alarm. At this point, D.A. King can be called a pragmatist.

…who has yet to comment on the Roman Catholic Church’s master plan for taking over America by controlling Congress, the White House and the Supreme Court, and promoting illegal immigration - both here and throughout Latin America - with the multi-tiered stratagem explicitly enunciated in their “National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic Ministry,” available at Amazon.
“Funny” how people with traditionally Roman Catholic family names apparently “lead the fight” against illegal immigration but don’t bother showing Rome’s playbook, published and available, to conclusively demonstrate that illegal immigration is an organized invasion for conquest of the United States by the same historic entity known by America’s Whig Founder as the Anti-Christ.
The same bi-partisan political false-elite faction controlled by Roman Catholic vote getting…to McCain, to Hillary, to Romney…”just can’t seem to buy a copy of their plan” and read it on the House floor or in the well of the Senate.

If this was a religious gathering, and it is you people who always yell loudest and longest about separation of state and church except when it benefits you, this is, in my opinion, just another one of your games. Sadie Fields is just a front for Ralph Reed in my humble opinion.

If Clinton(s) are the nominee they will dig up tons of dirt on John boy going back to his Naval Academy days, his POW torture (you can hear ‘em now insinuating he’s a little nuts because of it, and they’re right) on through his divorce from his first wife, etc, etc. Get ready for 4 years of Clinton hell.

Great comments D.A. Isakson and Chambliss screwed up royally be making ANY endorsement. They need to mind their own business and stay out of it while the race is close. House Members are fine to endorse candidates since they represent the constituents of their district - not the entire state. Sadie Fields is right - this is a HUGE let down for grassroots Republicans. Our Senators failed us.

Let’s face it guys, short of building a wall 30 feet high, we will never be able to stop the illegal immagrints from Mexico. And, if we did we still have the issue on our hands of the ones that will remain. We, as a country, should take advantage of what we have here…..dirt cheap labor. The fair tax law should be passed (with some tinkering) and our problem will be quite close to being solved. Also, as long as cities and counties don’t inforce “single-family housing” laws we will continue to have property values drop and cities will continue to be run by illegals. As a republican voter I am completly torn on who should represent our party for this election. Immigration is one of my most important issues along with abortion.

Jane, it’s a “Bronx Cheer”. If you’re going to say it, get it right.
JeffAtlanta, I’m not easily fooled. I’m smart enough to look at the voting record, especially the votes both Senators took on amendments during the immigration debate and on final passage. Amendments to require illegals to touchback at home, that provided stiff penatlies for their lawbreaking, that denied them benefits, that punished those who assist illegals in coming here. The voting record speaks for itself, but why would you want to let the facts get in the way of your argument.

The issue before us is not Iraq or the War on Terror. The great question is, “What kind of America will we leave our children?” The greatest generation left us an America we could trust, that had our back. Ask yourself this: would you turn your back on George Bush in a war? hell no, he’d shoot you in the back if it suited some misperceived tactical advantage. We need a course correction. there has occurred a spacious disconnect between America and our government. That’s gotta change, and Hillary/Obama can change it.

We need 3,4,5…..50 parties and not the two party system. The two party system is dying. This election will give additional proof of this. The Democratic party will fracture as I see that coming. There are many Democrats who have problems with both Obama and Clinton. Obama’s affiliation to the hateful and pro-Farrakhan (a racist and hateful person who leads a racist black cult) church will come to the forefront very soon and it will be very dvisive as it is already becoming on radio and the blogs. Clinton is a symbol of corruption. McCain makes deals with the Kennedy types who millions distrust. Romney is too rich for a number of people. What ever happened to working class leaders? Leaders who will tax the rich but make the poor work so that neither enslaves the middle class? That is why many more parties are needed and the two party system is dying.

The GOP has abused the constitutionally awarded powers due a president and vice president. These two pirate-puppets have broken just about every law there is confining the white house. She will pull us back and leave us less guarded against terrorists. You have just stated you will dishonor those in uniform and make them retreat from their mission unaccomplished. I hope each of you are willing to accept you have publicly stated complete disregard for those service men and women and the defense of your nation. Your selfish aims are to put your hatred first over your nation. This is a time to stand up not to run and hide. Perhaps it is better you do go hide in the corner and let Hillary win. Only cowards would allow such action to happen to their nation. This proves how pathetic the party has become that people would openly let their nation turn to weakness. By all means, do your part and rub your nation’s flag in the dirt. May the blood of those who die in the process be placed on your hands.

The right wing fanatics are getting a dose of what they deserve. The majority of people in this country, including the Republican party, are sick and tired of their trying to push their religious beliefs onto everybody else. While I am a Democrat and not in the least thinking of voting Republican, I do think McCain is, by far, the most level-headed and experienced candidate in the Republican race. Huckabee and Romney just scare the heck out of me with their religious beliefs which they would inevitably try to legislate upon all of us Americans. I applaud Chambliss and Isakson (which I don’t very often) for making their own minds up and not letting a bunch of religious freaks force them to do something else.

When the Democrats were in control of this state, the roads got built, crooks got locked up, and murders got fried.
Now, under Sadie Fields and Ralph Reed, Republican lawmakers shake in their boots to these two idiots. The metro traffic is in gridlock, we’re running out of water, and the criminals run the courts and prisons (think Brian Nichols and Hinton Fuller).

No one has taken a position on immigration based on any religion including Christianity. That is a red herring. Illegal immigration is a problem because of the financial and social cost to the country. Our senators have decided that currying favor with McCain is more important than representing their constituents. Well, there are lots of fine Republicans who could fill those slots quite nicely. And come election time, I, for one, won’t forget. McCain is a disaster on free speech, immigration, global warming, guantanamo and other issues. I don’t deny his military service for this country, however, that does not give him a free pass for his horrible legislative record. In addition, he has a very thinly veiled nasty streak and hair trigger temper. Thanks, but no thanks. This has nothing to do with hating anyone, but more to do with loving my country. McCain stands for the stifling of free speech, the invasion of our neighbors to the south, pretty lame on the economy (what tax cuts, oh yeah, the ones I voted against twice) closing of guantanamo and a long list of other liberal positions. If you want a choice in the general election then Vote Romney - a true conservative who can WIN!!!!!!!!

Political, national security is a POLICY, not an appropriation, and your comments show just how little you understand it. You asked in an earlier post, “what kind of America will we leave our children”. The kind of America you would like to leave apparently is one where our children live in fear of Islamofascist terrorists, who won’t stop attacking us even if you get your wish of us surrendering in Iraq. I for one want to leave my children a nation that is strong and secure. We disagree, I get it. So go vote for a “change of course”, and go vote for the candidate that wants us to surrender and leave. However, I’ll vote for the guy that has a better understanding of national security, who understands that it is more then “just an appropriation”, and that keeps our country on the offense rather then on defense.
Like I said, too bad for you there’s no surrender party on the ballot with Osama bin Laden as its nominee. I’m sure you’d vote for him.

Realize that he is a war hero, but all war heroes do not make great leaders with multiple PROBLEMS on their plate. Simply would ask him to address the following fundamental challenges with some specific answers, and not “Well my friends, it is going to be hard!”
*Revamping public education to cause our kids to be competitive in a global environment in the future? We continue to fall behind competitive countries, especially in math and science. Our high school diploma graduate rates continue to fall, and many who do graduate have difficulty reading their diplomas!
*Specific plans to cause American enterprise to become more competitive in a global environment? What we seem to hear are threats against businesses, yet some claim they are going to bring back jobs — HOW??? (Her husband suggests that we should ‘slow down economic growth to protect the planet’!)
*Providing additional health care availability without throwing the baby out with the bath water… HOW? (really do not think that dictating from Washington is the answer or the right precedent to establish.)
*Plans and policies to cause the US to become energy independent in 10 - 15 years (walking vice driving is not a solution!)?
*Revamping the US military to bring the strength of the forces back to the levels of 1990 — prior to the cuts of the mid 90’s — with heavier reliance on robotics and artificial intelligence?
*Maintaining the sovereignty of the US by closing the ‘open borders’?
*Cleaning up the obscene waste by the Federal government — especially earmarks by both parties?
*Fixing Social Security, MEDICARE and MEDICAID, including the hard decisions that future generations are either going to have to dig real deep, or some major modifications to the systems will have to be made?
Very hard to imagine that Saudi Arabia, China, Japan and other countries we borrow from today are going to continue to prop us up with loans if we do not subsequently clean up our own house; start managing at national level; and STOP making promises that we know cannot be kept much after being elected.

This life-long democrat’s vote for Senator McCain will cancel out at least one of the republican radio entertainer’s votes.
Hannity, Boortz, and Limbaugh listen day-after-day to people who fawn over them or go speak to adoring audiences and believe that what they hear from their fans is what is representative of America.
The hate and venom being spewed at Senator McCain is troubling but this man spent six years being beaten and tortured. I doubt there is much that these types could do to truly hurt this fine patriot.

If you want to put untold Negroes in prison because illegal immigrants have become a priority in the workforce, elevate Negroes to the highest positions in the criminal justice system; director of prisons, chief of police, and police man/police woman, etc…There will be no measurable blow back from that respective community; neither will they understand the process.
If the New World Order crowd decides to put Barack Obama in the White House, look out Africa. The powers that be will declare that Al-Qaeda has set up business in every African country; obviously military action will be required; chaos and mayhem will follow. The Negroes in America will never understand the process.

Please explain to the readers here what the National Council of The Race ( en Espanol: La Raza - some help here http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=13863 ) is and why they get tax dollars to smear Americans who want secure borders and defend illegal immigration in the name of ethnic hustling?..I mean rights…

As a conservative, I still plan to vote. However, it will be against all Republican congressmen and senators. It’s time for these charlatans to go. Also, I plan to vote for the Democrat who I think will end up being the biggest embarrassment for their party. I can’t figure out if that’s going to be O’bama or Klinton, but I hope one of them is their next Jimmy Carter who allows us to regroup and identify the next Reagan.

I hope all of the right wing trash that allowed these immigrant haters to use your party for their nefarious purposes relize that the Republican party will pay heavily in lost elections for generations to come. These uncalled for attacks have rallied immigrant citizens that had never voted before to register. Green Card holding Latinos are applying for citizenship in droves just to be able to vote. In Cobb County alone there are 10,000 newly registered Latinos. Great job D.umb A.zz King. How does it feel to have helped the cause of these hard working people to such a degree. And if you think this rush to the polls won’t start influencing local elections, you are dumber than you look and more ignorant than you sound.

It is a sad day when Republicans think that McCain, Romney and Huckabee actually represent “conservative” prinicples. The fact is that Ton Paul was the only hope. THanks to Fox News and the dumb evangelical lobby, his message has not been heard. Virtually everyone who listens to what HE has to say (and not an ad or media pundit) knows he has the answers Americans want.

The enraged bigot/theocrat wing of the Republican Party is in full roar and it’s a source of great amusement for those of us on the other side. A suggestion to the DumbA$$ Kings and Sadie Fields of the world: start your own party and run some combination of Tom Tancredo/Lou Dobbs/Tom Delay/Rick Santorum/George Allen on the Presidential ticket.
All the crying on the right about the lack of a Reagan-like candidate for Prez is a sympton of the delusional state of modern Republicans. Reagan gave millions of illegals amnesty, cut and ran from Lebanon, did absolutely nothing in 8 years to end abortion (he put Sandra Day O’Connor on the Supreme Court), had to agree to a huge tax increase after his initial tax cut helped explode the deficit, and basically sounded the death knell for fiscal responsibility within his party.
And you people revere him. Since you lemmings really think he ended the Soviet Union by telling Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall, you deserve what you get. Unfortunately, you geniuses left us with the most incompetent President in the history of the country the last 7 years.
One more year until we have someone with a working brain in the White House.

Go Mitt! You are just what our sagging economy needs right now. I think McCain’s little trick several days prior to the Florida debate was deplorable! Lying and twisting your position on any withdrawal timetables in Iraq was his obvious desperate attempt to change the focus to the war and away from discussion of the economy, which he knows you clearly excel on. McStain has readily admitted he is weak on economic matters. Dirty tricks and politics! McStain you should be ashamed!

Very well said, Jeff. I consider that I follow politics a little closer than some and I have no idea who is the head of the Republican Party in Georgia. On the other hand, I see and hear Sadie Field’s name attached to everything Republican.
I’ve never been a big fan of John McCain but reality is beginning to push me in his direction. I could live with Huckabee but he can’t win in the General Election and I don’t think Romney can either. It’s time the non-democrats united behind a candidate that has the best chance of winning, even if they see it as the lesser of the evils. Otherwise, we will have to live with Clinton/Obama.

I would also like to add that this “conversation” (thanks Hillary) we are having on our side is healthy. I shows that the party is alive and engaged. I see that D.A. King has been attacked for speaking the truth. My friend knows D.A. - his sister IS a Korean immigrant and the board of directors of his group has Hispanics on it. Seems important fact to me. Many would question whether Mike Huckabee is a true conservative due to being pro-illegal aliens and high taxation; I would question whether he is even a true CHRISTIAN! For an ex-Baptist preacher, the man sure has a potty mouth! Re: where to put the flag pole if anyone disagreed with his position on the Confederate flag, and also considering the risqué music/song lyrics used by Huckabee and his band, Capitol Offense (www.irdial.com/blogdial/?p=909). Imagine the pastor of your church singing H*y Tonk Woman or Devil With a Blue Dress (song lyrics would be offensive to many). It seems to me, this type of music would appeal more to liberals. Mike Huckabee and Hillary Clinton both are having an MTV event today; perhaps Huckabee and his band will find a “clean” song or two to perform during the event?
Huckabee has a history of corruption and lack of ethics and is one of two republican presidential candidates on the list of TOP TEN MOST CORRUPT POLITICIANS of 2007 (www.judicialwatch.org). One example, after being married for 30 years, Huckabee set up a WEDDING registry at Target for him and his wife to receive gifts for their house. The wedding registry was a way to avoid ethics laws prohibiting gifts to politicians.
Huckabee has also spawned a son who stoned and hung a dog to death. David was fired as a Boy Scout’s counselor for disobeying the “Be Kind” rule. Daddy Huck hindered the police investigation of David for animal cruelty. This should bring pause to anyone thinking of voting for Huckabee. Family animal cruelty issues often times indicate other problems as well.
His personality is described at Wikipedia as “petty, thin-skinned, self-righteous, and somewhat vindictive” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Huckabee).
I truly believe Mike Huckabee is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. I read somewhere that he wants to be the opening act for a Led Zeppelin concert. Which does Huckabee want more, to be a rock star or to be the president of the US? I for one, will not be voting for this rock-star-wanna-be. I hope other voters will do their homework and really learn about the candidates rather than just voting party lines and/or for whoever SEEMS to be the most conservative. Please don’t follow Mike Huckabee like blind sheep simply because he can joke around and was a minister. Actions always speak louder than words. Just ask those people who believed in Ted Haggard or Jimmy Swaggert.
Even if somehow, Mike Huckabee were to win the Repub nomination, he could never win in a general election. Just imagine the confederate flag flap being played over and over on the Democrat’s TV ads. And does anyone seriously think independents or moderates would vote for Mike Huckabee when he has made it clear that he would change the Constitution to ban abortions and gay marriage? Regardless of anyone’s view on abortion and gays, no candidate will win the White House by alienating so many Democrats and even moderates and independents on these issues.

I agree SOS, but nobody with a sense can figure out that this country and my wallet were much better off during the days of Clinton than they’ve been during the past 8 years. But of course he’s judged by an affair instead. It’s okay though when the neighborhood pastor takes a little extra from the collection basket, molests a kid, is a drunk, or cheats on his own wife. Better yet elect a president who is a so-called God fearing Christian, but can’t string together a sentence that makes sense, certainly can’t speak from the heart or without a speech writer, has been shady from day one and has slapped the middle class across the face, took us to a war in a region that has been at war with itself for hundreds of years and it’s fact his reasons were wrong, has done his best to ignore the man and organization that actually admitted to being behind 9/11, has no respect from leaders or people of other countries with a high standard of living, has turned his back on environmental issues, has lied time and time again, and has been a lame duck for the past 3 years. Yet people around here think you’re nuts for even thinking he has failed, even when over 70% of this country thinks he’s a joke. So they’ll continue to vote for the same old conservative leaders that use God as a way to get votes from these blinded fools in this state.

D.A. King do you deny being associated with the Federation for American Immigration Reform? Is this not what they and you ascribe to?
The Teflon Nativists: FAIR Marked by Ties to White SupremacyBy Heidi Beirich, Southern Poverty Law Center, Dec. 2007
At the center of the Tanton web is the nonprofit Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), the most important organization fueling the backlash against immigration. Founded by Tanton in 1979, FAIR has long been marked by anti-Latino and anti- Catholic attitudes. It has mixed this bigotry with a fondness for eugenics, the idea of breeding better humans discredited by its Nazi associations. It has accepted $1.2 million from an infamous, racist eugenics foundation. It has employed officials in key positions who are also members of white supremacist groups. Recently, it has promoted racist conspiracy theories about Mexico’s secret designs on the American Southwest and an alternative theory alleging secret plans to merge the United States, Mexico and Canada. Just last February, a senior FAIR official sought “advice” from the leaders of a racist Belgian political party.

We all know what Hillary Clinton stands for. McCain while is honorable in respects in his service to America. But, I’m afraid he is just another example of the Washington DC establishment. He is a politician. Tells you what you wanna hear. The Democratic party WANTS McCain to Win the Republican nomination. His sidekick Lindsey Graham is not a true conservative as well and thats another story. But all these people who say just vote for McCain and the republican party so it will defeat Hillary are kidding themselves. You might as well sell your soul to the devil. If Americans want change it starts in CLEANING out both houses of congress. Its not going to change no matter who wins the presidency, the gridlock will continue and the real important issues will not be solved. It also starts in Local governments as well and holding elected officials accountable. Our Government is a* Republic* not a Democracy. It belongs to the people that elect representatives. Its also funny that people who attack conservatives who have Jud-ail Christian values compare them to Islamic Extremist. Hmmm ..I haven’t seen Christians in America running around blowing up themselves and others. Those People who accuse politicians of wearing their relgion on their sleeves, Well who are they is my question? Last time I checked prayer is out of schools, In God WE Trust is in jeopardy and some don’t wanna salute our Grand ole Flag or even recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Like it or not and believe it or not America was founded on the Jud-ail- Christian Values and Morals that influence our Laws. If a person no matter what his or her religion may be, its not going to change the government like some folks going around trying to scare people that its the impending Apocalypse. One thing about it… I very Thankful to live in America, we could all be in the Middle East throwing Rocks at each other and really living in fear. Last but not least GOD BLESS AMERICA

It’s amazing to me as a foreigner, how the so called “greatest nation on earth”, can’t seem to understand that great nations MUST separate religion from politics. You cannot interpret the constitution properly if your judgement is influenced by your own personal religious beliefs. Unfortunately the U.S. is now in the same category as the arab countries who make all decisions based on religion. It’s sad. America used to be a great nation who defended all - not just those who went to the Baptist church on Sunday. Good that there are still some countries left who know that separation of church and state is the only true and fair way to achieve a government that represents all fairly.

Senators Chambliss and Isakson:
I am deeply upset and disappointed at your endorsement of Sn. McCain. As you know, he was:
1) Key senator for amnesty with McCain/Kennedy and wanted to rush the bill through before the public knew what it contained
2) McCain/Feingold, the biggest assault on the 1st amendment in America’s history
3) One of only TWO Republican Senators to vote against the Bush Tax Cut
4)Was a leader of the “Gang of 14” intending to maneuver close votes in the Senate-usually for the Democrats,
5) Is considered a “maverick” on virtually EVERY Republican bill and provided contentious resistance
