People with poor word skills would call this ‘synergy’

We all know that Georgia Democrats will hold their Jefferson-Jackson Day fund-raiser in the Georgia World Congress Center on Wednesday night.

Hillary Clinton and John Edwards are attending.

We also know that four of the nation’s largest African-American Baptist conventions are meeting in Atlanta on the same day. In the same building. With thousands upon thousands of delegates from around the country.

To no one’s surprise, Clinton just announced she’s added the National Baptist Convention to her schedule for a 4 p.m. address.

Edwards’ people say he’ll have to give the Baptist convention a miss. He’s to be in New Orleans tomorrow afternoon, tapping nails into a Habitat for Humanity house.

In 1977, when John Edwards received his law degree from the University of North Carolina, I was embarking on a campaign hike across North Carolina for the Democratic U.S. Senate primary of 1978, which came at the mid-term point of President Jimmy Carter’s term in the White House.

A lot of our fellow candidates in that Democtratic senatorial primary got to meet President Carter somewhere along the way, but I can say I was the only one to get to meet Billy Carter. Indeed, if I had kept on walking into Tennessee, maybe I would have been playing music in Nashville by now instead of fiddling around with journalism in North Carolina.

But seriously, Georgia friends, we have a lot of issues left over from that great and promising era under Jimmy Carter which have fallen by the wayside in some of the news media’s political reporting. Thank goodness John Edwards has refused to let these issues be lost in all the discussion, and for this, folks in Georgia and the Carolinas should be thankful in my own humble view.

John Edwards first ran for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina from Moore County, the next county over from Ruth Carter Stapleton’s home country of Cumberland. Former Sen. Edwards brings a lot of the spiritual compassion to this presidential that Mrs. Stapleton brought to our social and religious life in North Carolina.

Of course, there are more parallels which ought to be mentioned, but for now, here’s hoping Georgia Democrats will give John Edwards a good reception at the Jefferson-Jackson Day celebration.
