The robo-call and a distant apology

So on Martin Luther King Day, a ticked-off white telemarketer sends out a batch of automated phone calls, targeting residents of black Atlanta with feigned outrage that U.S. Rep. John Lewis has refused to endorse another African-American in the race for president.

There are times when you think the human farce has no boundary left to push.

But then you come across the whereabouts of Lewis, who was not in Atlanta on Monday — and so was not at home to take his automated phone call.

Lewis was in Rock Hill, S.C., where the white mayor of that border city handed the congressman a formal apology for the beating he received there as a 21-year-old in 1961, while attempting to integrate the local bus terminal.

“I hope that by our reception today, you recognize that we are a better place, a better people,” said Mayor Doug Echols.

And perhaps some of us are.

Jim/Bob,

Are you misleading the readers here? I don’t think this call was placed on MLK Day because the call refers to MLK Day coming-up, not occuring in the present-tense.

Hey, but don’t let facts get in the way of a good misleading story…after all, you guys have to work for the King & Queen of Misleading Writers, Jay Bookman and Cynthia Tucker.

Misleading? I think not. Political push pollers don’t work for free, someone needs to follow the money on this story. Hillary phobia by Republicans perhaps?

If we are a better people than we were in 1961, then it’s because MLK made us realize that Lincoln’s better angels weren’t enough. MLK knew that only our best angels would do. Our fear is that powerful!

I dont think there’s ever been more fear in America than now. It’s palpable. I would not buy stocks here. It may be too unsettling to elect a black president. Maybe we want our mommy, Hillary.

I want my mommy. American wants it’s mommy. America wants it’s mommy. What’s the matter america? You so scared you want your mommy?

Vote Obama, cause only the best will do.

Mike…Galloway and Kemper linked to an AJC story that outed the Republican operative who did it named Garst. He spun a story but it’s clear the GOP wants to run against Hillary…”don’t throw me in that briar patch…please,” is their angle.

If the People stay ahead of the treasonous faction of fascist plutocracy we can restore the Dream and cast the Beast into the Pit.

So what? What happened to free speech? Obama will never win anyway so what is the problem? Only 15% of the counry is black. Half of those are thugs who can’t drive or who do not have an ID. That leaves maybe 5% who will be able to vote. I assure you that 99% of white America will not vote for Obama Bin Laden. Go Republican! Continue to help out the whites and rich!

I thought this was a free country. Just because someone doesnt vote there ethnic background doesn’t make them a disgrace. The disgrace is in thinking we all think the same and have the same issues. I am an African-American Women and I am for Clinton. I am insulted to think that anyone thinks we as a people can’t choose someone based on qualifications, background and the forward movement of this country without being considered a sell out. Also, if we follow this logic it would be the same as saying- Brother if I jump off the bridge will you jump with me -no matter what your believes are. This whole issue is becoming a stepping stone for a republican to just run into the presidency once again. Last time it was the Gay marriage thing that so-called church going folks got bogged down with.( By the way the real issue with that is the fact that you have denied a US citizen, worker and/or voter the right to apply for a license). Stop this fighting and let people vote for who they want.

By the way if every African-American voted for Obama he wouldnt win because statisically we dont have enough power. So stop the dumbness.

Chris your ignorant commments have your thinking stalled budy. If you look there is a Mormon, African-American and a Women running all capable of winning. Come from under your rock and get a real education besides being in the southeast. THere are pleny of educated African Americans in the North, Midwest, West and Southeast and Southwest. So please speak intelligently and not out of ignorance.

John Lewis is “re-elected” to term-after-term in Congress with no opposition. Why? Because no other black has the gonads to take on a “civil rights icon” and whites figure blacks will vote along racial lines regardless, so why waste time and money. Lewis knows this better than anyone, so why the hell should he care what his 5th District constituents think? He never will until folks let him know he doesn’t own his seat in congress.

I recently received a 5th District survey from the Republican Party requesting my opinions and a donation. I replied that I would consider both requests when they starting running someone against John Lewis.

John Lewis obviously doesn’t care what his white constituents think or he wouldn’t have made those racist political ads several years ago in support of a black Democratic candidate running for the chairmanship of the Fulton County board of commissioners. Same can be said of Shirley Franklin who also participated in the ads. Even the AJC took issue with Lewis’ racial pandering.

To all those professing outrage or disgust at the suggestion that blacks should vote for Obama simply because he’s black, you are ignoring the past few elections for mayor of Atlanta, along with state representatives like good ole Able Mabel. Or take Marion Berry in D.C. The painful truth is that while not all blacks vote along racial lines, the majority of those who make up the Democrats power base in places like Atlanta have and do. I mean look at the Hartsfield fiasco. Ivan Allen, who actually developed the airport into a viable facility, gets a couple blocks of a treet named for him while Maynard Jackson, who’s main accomplishment was turning Hartsfield into one big MBE, get’s naming rights. Like Mabel said, “white business.” Now, with political leaders like those named above, what is there left to argue?

Filbert I understand what your saying but all of this is particularly true in the south were segration has caused people to be jaded to change. The real America is made of different people with different ideas. Atlanta and the SOuth need to catch up and stop thinking they only count in the scope of things.

Isn’t John Lewis the one the Democrats call the “Conscience of the Congress”? If he has any conscience at all he wouldn’t be supporting a pair of grifters like the Clintons.

Hey Chris, you’ve proven why blacks need to vote for blacks, we don’t know whos the enemy. The good old boys continue teaching ignorance and racism

If John Lewis were truly the “Conscience of the Congress,” or a genuine follower of Dr. King, he would have forced Congress to bring to justice the killers of Dr. King as adjudicated by the Memphis jury.

We are supposed to be a nation of laws, not of perverted treasonous false men.
