Black Georgia voters joining rolls at three times the pace of white voters
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
There’s little doubt that the Democratic presidential primary is generating excitement in Georgia, particularly among African-American voters.
Secretary of State Karen Handel will post numbers on her web site tomorrow indicating that, in the last three months of 2007, African-Americans registered to vote at a rate three times that of whites in Georgia.
The numbers may be incremental, but they do show a definite trend. From Oct. 1, 2007 to Jan. 1, 2008, the number of black, registered active voters increased 1.6 percent to 1.2 million.
Over the same period, the number of white active voters increased .5 percent to 2.9 million.
African-Americans make up 27 percent of the Georgia electorate, according to the new figures. Whites make up 66 percent.
Which makes more important the fact that, even in raw numbers, new African-American voters outpaced white voters — 19,351 to 16,947.
Here’s the big surprise: When divided by race and gender, black males — who generally have a spotty voting record — increased their numbers the most, by 1.9 percent.

It’s always a positive thing when people of any color register to vote, but let’s sit back and watch for the negative comments to start rolling in and the poll ends up being about race only!

I agree mamaj. It is important that everyone, regardless of race registers to vote and actually get out to vote. I think all races alike are tired of what is happening with this country and should pick the best candidate for the job with race nor gender being an issue.

I think all anyone asks is that voters make an informed decision when they vote. Don’t vote based on race. If you do, YOU are a racist! Vote based on qualifications, and your gut feelings.

Leave it to the AJC to use race-based headlines to drum up attention. Will the AJC please stop trying to influence voters of any color, just do your job, report the news and stop trying to be the moral compass for your readers. Your readers, by the way, are only interested in the sports, business and cop sections, not your biased opinions. Did it ever occur to you that registered white voters so outpace registered black voters that any movement in the black voter population would be a huge gain? Think long and often please before you post a headline intended to stir racial fires.

I second the positive message of voter enrollment, particularly amongst black people. I just hope that with voting we demand our votes be counted this 3rd time around and not be turned back and if our votes be resisted we have peaceful protest to have voice heard and votes counted.

I recall hearing the same thing about blacks and college age kids registering to vote during the last 2 Presidential elections……and their candidate still lost.
Check it out, historically/statistically blacks and young voters DO NOT show up at the polls as expected.
This election will be the same.

This is not a big surprize. The only reason black registration is increased, is Obama’s candidacy. To this point, whites still out number blacks 3 to 1. Georgia will still vote Republican. No reason to get excited, democrats.

That’s right “mamaj!” You people are pathetic. The blacks, AKA thugs, “run” Atlanta right? Look how well they have done with the city! Grady is screwed, there are nightly shootings, the nice, mostly white, Atlantic Station opened yet some of the thugs had to go and mess that up and cause a few shootings there. Well done. I pray that Milton county happens so we can be separate from Fulton “thug” county. Anyone who is a democrat is nothing but pathetic. Tell me this black folk, if you had a lot of money that you actually worked for, would you be happy if some of it was going to lazy white people that sit on their butt, have 12 kids, and do nothing? Would you want to have to pay for healthcare through your check while lazy white people get/want it for free? Thought so. Go Republican!

Where are all of the posters at on this good news about the responsibility and empowerment of a new power structure within the Black community and overall in Georgia? I can remember recent blogs about the mistreatment of dogs and all of Atlanta and Georgia had a lot to say.
Hmmmm. Negative news.. you post.. positive news.. you say nothing!
People are re-energized like never before because Bush and his team have left everyone OF ALL RACES so destitute and replete of hope.. people who may not normally care to vote are going to ensure that the hell they caught over the last 8 years doesn’t continue!
It’s time for REAL CHANGE in how business is done in this country and our communities.
Nationally, BARACK and Hilary (moreso Barack)represents that change and everyone’s excited about it because it’s the real change we need.
Locally in Atlanta and Cherokee, It’s Mark Veazey (Fulton County Sheriff)and Nicole Ebeskotte (Cherokee County Sheriff) who represent that same wave of radical change and responsible leadership we thirst for. ROCK THE VOTE!

Let’s be honest we are tired of the type of was is going on in America. We want to see a change… not focus on the fact that African Americans are planning on voting. We have a right to vote and that’s that. Did one consider the demographics of those who registered to vote this time around other than race… Perhaps its the “Gen. Y”… Report the news and stop trying stir race and gender issue… Our focus should be on improving the U.S.A. not race and gender.

So you want change! Start with yourself. Get educated or how about apply common sense. For example, don’t buy a $300,000 house when you only make $25,000 per year. Don’t buy a $40,000 BMW when your house cost $40,000 and you bought it with an adjustable rate mortage. My point is that we are an ignorant nation that is hell bent on instant gratification and greed. If you have to blame Bush for something, blame him for not understanding that the average American today is stupid and they cannot help themselves. Enough of my rambling. Just do me one favor America, please vote for a moral, intelligent, humble and zealous leader. Don’t vote based on race or gender. Oh yeah, and make sure that that leader has a plan and make him/her outline that plan for you. Just saying that you are for change and that you have a plan is not enough. Hell, I have a plan. Vote for me for president and I will allocate money to the Altanta Braves to get a better outfielder than Mark Kotsay and I would also use government money to move the Falcons to an outdoor stadium. See, I have plan but it wouldn’t do much for the rest of the country. Just think about it folks. I am so afraid that so many blacks are registering just to vote for a black candidate.

Something to think about it.
The guy who terrorized America was Osama Bin Laden. A guy running for president has the name Barack Obama. I am not comparing the 2 as people, just their names. Pretty similar. I just can’t believe that a man with that name could ever be elected. He is not of “true” American decent. The name and his heritage (not black you racist minded people, but Kenyan)would appear to be a big red flag. I know it is a stretch but it is just one of those things that just doesn’t feel right. It’s sort of superstitous thing but I think we can afford a little superstition in this country.

This article should invoke minorities to vote. Finally a thought has emerged that “My vote counts”. There is a trend in the increase of African-American voters and if it continues at a high rate then more and more Georgians blacks, white, and all races(because of the stir-up in African-American voter turnout will bring major attention) will know more about what is going on in the government today. I would like to remove tax cuts for more federal and state money to cope with problems like: the drought, public school repairs, road work, science works, parks, libraries, and all public accommodations.

You can register them, but they won’t vote. Anyone worth their wit can analyze the voter rolls and see that every year it gets flooded with potential voters who never bother to vote. Motor Voter is another culprit as to why the voter rolls are chock full of people who got registered to vote but never do. If Cynthia McKinney couldn’t get our the vote, these Democratic hopefuls certainly cannot. And gosh forbit it’s too hot or rains on election day. Then even the whites won’t show up!

You can register easily.
When it comes time to show an ID at the polls… hahah. Let’s see the turnout.
Blacks fear da man and won’t produce an ID even to exercise their voting privilege.
When turnout is low, look for the national association against Caucasian people to protest and call it something akin to a poll tax. It’s never because they are lazy or paranoid.

And if, as you say. they all promise the same thing, but I still want to vote for Obama—-what is the damn problem!!

1st, Michael, Chris, & Karen, all three of you are Dumb@sses. Especially you Chris. I work for the government in a position that routinely has me come in contact with people on welfare and similar assistance programs on a daily basis. Just to show your ignorance, WHITE PEOPLE make up the majority of this country’s gov’t assistance programs on a ratio of almost 8 to 1 (7.86 whites for every 1 black/latino/AND asian combined.) So next time check your facts and stop listening to David Duke and Tom Metzger if you are even smart enough to know who those two other idiots are. (And before you assume, I’m white!!!!) 2nd, This is typical Gwinnett Journal of Constipation (AJC) crap trying to stir up the pot based on race because they lack the journalistic skills to write about the real issues that matter in this election. AJC would rather take the low road to sell more copies of this glorified fish wrap/bird cage liner than talk about real issues.
3rd, The issues that matter most to ALL regardless of race are the economy and how everyone can improve, education, the environment especially water & oil resources, job creation/stability/medical benefits, etc. Last, All those that claim to be BUSH Republicans, go back and read documented comments he made in a conversation with a WALL STREET JOURNAL reporter back in 2002 (I can’t remember the exact article or would give the link). I don’t have an exact quote, but the jist of his comment was if you aren’t making over 6 figures a year, HIS vision for the Republican party is not for you. He further went on to comment that people below that status level are not meant to understand his policies or relate for his economic vision for this country. You have to remember that the Bush family comes from OLD money dating back to when his Great-grandfather was a bootlegger during Prohibition who used that money to help his Grandfather become a U.S. Ambassador. And yes, the Bush family has very strong ties to the Bin Laden family in Saudi Arabia back from when the Grandfather was an Ambassador. Don’t believe, read your history books. It amazes me how bad Bush has pulled the wool over peoples eyes and they will follow behind him like lemmings jumping off a cliff anyway even though he has done more damage to this country on scale that hasn’t been seen since just before the Great Depression.

Ron, You are alright with me!!! Despite the obvious race baiting that article (choke… hack… choke) is trying to provoke, you and a few others are not taking the bait. A few others of you are taking the high road. Even though I am white, I work with a lot of decent black/latino/white/and asian people who just want to make a good living for themselves and their families. People forget that THE PROMISE THAT IS AMERICA is one that all people can have chance to live the AMERICAN DREAM. People forget that the main reason so many people are registering to vote in droves regardless of race,is that this country is a mess.
People are very tired of the status quo. Besides, I can’t say that I will vote for Obama or more for Huckabee. But I do know that I don’t think that 2 families should have a lock on the White House since the 80’s. (If any of you think that Reagan ran the White House back then and not Daddy Bush especially after Reagan got shot and had the stroke that brought about his Alzeihmers, think again. Just look at his speeches before and after the shooting.) A Bush or a Clinton has controlled the highest office or had heavy handed control since the Reagan years. (Longer if you count daddy Bush’s roles as head of the CIA and other National Security Advisor positions he has held before Reagan was elected.)

I think that African-Americans will show up the vote so, we should pray that our votes are counted this time. Also, most African-Americans will vote for the best candidate who happens to be African-American. I am tired of witnessing so many poor people vote rich while they are living poor in Georgia. George Bush’s policies does not promote economic values for the average american. I pray that the white voters show up to the polls and make a difference instead of continuing to support the republican party that does not promote policies for their income level. We have a lot of ignorant voters in Georgia that continue to live poor but vote rich.

Whew!! There were a bunch of crazies out of the loony bin yesterday!! Another day in the South, another day obsessed with the race of the person and not the quality of the person. Amazing!! What has it been? Like 100+ years since the Civil War and you Southerners STILL can’t let the race issue go?!?
Think Progressive. Think Iowa. Those people voted for a man BECAUSE of his ideals, not his color. Perhaps in another 100+ years the South will finally catch up with the rest of the world…….well, one can only hope.

Sorry, Debbie, as a native Southerner I feel you’re being wildly optimistic in your 100 year prediction. The South (which I love) is a backwater where ignorance, fundamentalism, militarism, and bigotry reign. But could Faulkner, Oconnor, Welty, McCarthy, et al have created such marvelous literature without such a landscape?

My comment is to all of you out there who seem to be crazy this morning…What is a name? Think about this. Osama is a name. So if you see someone with the name, Jeffery, Ted, or John Wayne are you going to become afraid and say, “The name scares me to death and I know he wants to kill me!” Listen people, forget the name junk and come out and say you won’t vote for the man and forget it. You can blame anything if you feel you have to but please don’t let other people know that you just escaped the state mental hospital by saying the man’s name scares you to death!

csquare6 is right! What is in a name? Would not Bush by any other name have let Osama Bin Laden slip through his fingers at Tora Bora? Would not Cheney, by any other name, have outed that CIA agent? The problem, near POTUS, is not in our nom de plumes, but in naming our Plames.
like that?

I think you are so right in your comments about people voting rich. The bottom line is that over half of the people who vote for family values, etc. are not voting for that at all. They are voting, thinking that the hands of time will go backwards and gee, wake up one morning and they will be in the south of yesteryear! Never mind that their foreparents didn’t have slaves either! They continue to vote for a party and uphold the awful behavior of the party leadership knowing that they have no jobs, they are not even making it from paycheck to paycheck and believe that all people of color have nothing better to do than sit up and wait on a check! My goodness, take a walk and look around you. Some of the people who get those checks (I am sure they get a million a month) aren’t people of color after all and perhaps since people of color are in the minority in the first place…do the math! The fact that some blacks are finally smelling the roses and waking up and voting is wonderful. It is my hope that most of them will realize that unless everyone exercises the right to vote, the voices of all people will never be heard. If you do not own a Fortune 500 company and your money is working for you and not you working for your money, you cannot afford to vote for the party of the rich. Keep on pretending that you are rich! Pretend until they take your house, cut your job, and tell you that you don’t have insurance and therefore your life can’t be saved! Keep on keeping on and perhaps generations later someone will see what lengths people in the State of Georgia went to so that they could pretend that they were rich.

Sorry but Obama has two strikes against him. One - He’s a Muslin at heart since he was sworn in with the coran. Two - Take a look at his supposedly Christian church…Racist as they come. Not all whites are racist and Obama proves that point. Since he is running, whites can expect a block vote in his favor.
