A frigid Cardwell on a stick — he made it through the night
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Dale Cardwell is alive, though slightly frozen. We just got off the phone with him.
The Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate had himself hoisted to the top of the Corey smokestack yesterday, and vows to stay there until people start paying attention to his message.
He just happened to pick the coldest night of the winter to start his stunt. “It was bitterly, bitterly cold. But I made it through the night,” Cardwell said.
Right now, he’s huddling beneath a tarp in a sleeping bag — and not on his web cam.
“I’m going to try to wait for it to warm up a bit before I emerge,” he said. Cardwell suspects that will be about noon, when the sun gets to his side of the tower — which he found wobbles a bit in the wind.
You can find his web cam here.

Don’t laugh! I remember when Lawton Chiles won a Senate seat by walking across Florida. They called him Walkin’ Lawton. He served 3 terms in the U.S. Senate and 2 as Florida’s governor…dying on the job. Maybe we could call Dale Cardwell “Sittin’ Dale. What’s your stand on better VA medical care for seriously disabled veterans who live great distances from VA facilities, Dale? Just shout it down from the pole! You might be surprized on how many would listen. Hold on tight and for gosh sakes…don’t fall off that pole!

I support Dale 100%. Here’s something to ponder.
A “bought” senator Saxby, wearing a $1000.00 suit being entertained by a lobbyist while eating a $500.00 meal!
Does he care about you? I don’t think so!

Cardwell’s sick stunt up on a tower just emphasizes once again how little effort the Democrats are putting into this year’s Senate race which means, of course, that the Draft Dodger will get a free ride back to the Senate.
Whatever happened to the speculation that someone with a military background might enter the race, such as David Poythress?
Again, I urge Jim Galloway to explore why Democrats with some stature and political experience (Cathy Cox, Roy Barnes, etc.) are not seriously considering running against Saxby who only looks good when compared to the pathetic Cardwell.
Seriously, are the Democrats going to let the Draft Dodger have a free walk back to Washington? Is Daffy Dale the best we can offer voters?

Mr. Galloway, I’m with George. Why hasn’t a big name Democrat stepped forward yet? This would seem to be the perfect year, and the ever moronic Saxby would seem to be the perfect opponent for a smart Dem to defeat. Why doesn’t anyone want the job?

I believe that it is easier to sit on the sidelines and pontificate, judge, comment, and chastise than it is to do something to cause change. I am not a staffer, but I have known Dale for a long time. He is an honorable person who wants to make a positive change in America.
As everyone is well aware, Dale is taking no money from PAC’s. If you note his contributors you see quickly that most contributions are from friends, family and Georgians who in the past haven’t thought that individual contributions mattered very much.
Now, contrast that with the incumbent, and his closest Democratic rival. They have over 95% of their contributions from those who stand the most to gain from their favor, not individual voters.
Lastly, Dale wishes to get his point across to those whom he hasn’t been able to reach thus far. In the 45 years I have known Dale; he has never backed down, nor given up when he stood even a small chance of standing up for anyone without a voice.
What he is doing has been planned and thought out well in advance. I wish him well.
God bless Georgia and America.

To answer George and Craig’s question: The reason Dems’ haven’t been able to put forth a high profile candidate is because they don’t have one. All have been defeated by Republicans in recent elections(Roy Barnes, Mark Taylor) or beat up in primaries(Cathy Cox). The only candidate that has a chance to win is Jim Marshall and i think he wants to run for Governor in 2010. Another thing is that every major poll taken has Saxby at a comfortable position for re-election. His approval rating is around 56-57 percent and his disapproval is below 40 percent which doesn’t bode well for any challenger. Also why is a candidate moronic if you don’t agree with him? I have never clearly understood that. I don’t agree with many Democrats, but i don’t think they are moronic, i just think they are wrong.

George W. Bush, James Guckert, Ted Haggard, Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Saxby Chambliss. “My Pet Goat,” WMD, “Bring ‘em on,” Dubai Port Deal. ‘nuff said. Show Bush holding hands with the Saudi, next to one with Foley, Chambliss and Craig, and Georgia will reject Babylon Risen. National Dems don’t do it because Rome runs them, too.

Rand Knight and Josh Lanier are also potential Saxby opponents. Those of you who think we should put up with this sorry excuse of a bought & owned big-money Senator because there’s no point in challenging the status quo are missing what’s great about America. You deserve competent representation that cares about the people of this state and the future of this country. Send Saxby back to the rattlesnake hole he slinked out of!

Dear “Fact_Checker” – I, for one, am glad that Saxby takes money from PAC’s and anyone with an issue that Dale supports should wish he did too! I am an NRA member and can not afford to send Saxby $2,000 (or any amount of money that will make a significant difference in getting his pro-2nd amendment rights message out) – but, the NRA can combine my money with other members and send him a check because we know he will always fight for our issue in Washington. It’s about electing people to office who think like you – not buying votes or support. Otherwise, all of the NRA money would go to Ted Kennedy and all the pro-abortion groups would be sending donations to Republicans…I don’t see anything wrong with it!

Oh, and “Fact_Checker” – I just looked it up. Buying a Senator a $500 meal is illegal and nobody does it. Also, I searched the FEC reports from when the entertainment restrictions were more loose and nobody was buying Saxby $500 meals – not even close! But, you knew that when you wrote it – you just didn’t expect anyone to actually check the facts!

While I am a conservative Republican and generally vote that way, a man with guts enough to sit on a pole in freezing weather to draw attention to his U.S. Senate campaign is impressive! It is obvious that while this guy doesn’t have access to special interest bucks and can’t keep up with the big spenders he will do whatever it takes to get his message (whatever that may be) out. As one who spent 40 years running political campaigns (and winning most of them) I thought I had seen just about everything but this stunt takes the cake. As it is, we now have the best Congress special interest money can buy (and that’s not much. What have we got to lose by listening to what this guy Cardwell has to say? He might be just another kook but then again he might have something to say that makes sense. God knows that would be a refreshing change from the status quo!He may be sitting on a pole but at least he is not sitting on the fence like most politicians! Hang on to that pole, Cardwell. It is probably a better platform than some of our current politicians got elected on!

If the democrats are serious they’ll run someone like Roy Barnes, Mark Taylor, or even Cathy Cox.
Those in the race right now are a joke. Chambliss can be beaten, but not by these guys, or an idiot on a smoke stack. He may freeze to death tonight!

Gary thanks for your comments. I guess I would think that times and issues change, just because Cathy Cox lost to Mark Taylor in a Dem primary doesn’t mean she couldn’t beat Saxby.
And no, all Republicans aren’t moronic. Johnny is a very smart guy, although, like you, I disagree with many of his positions. But Saxby, on the other hand, is an empty suit, doing only what his handlers in the White House tell him to do.

Dear Mr. “gimmeabreak”. You said, ““Fact_Checker” – I just looked it up. Buying a Senator a $500 meal is illegal and nobody does it. ” Did you see who was driving the turnip truck you just got off of? I should have itemized the $500.00 meal. One should mention the private air transportation and posh amenities paid for by defense contractors, pharmaceutical and tobacco lobbies. Sorry about that.

Remember the draft dodger took a senate seat away from a decorated war veteran. Just goes to show in a back@asswards place like Georgia all you have to do is identify yourself as a Rethuglican and you get elected. It’s just like it was when the current crop of Rethuglicans were Democrats and repeatedly got elected. Now you know why Georgia ranks last in education. It’s the poor gene pool.

My “Fact_Checker” friend – I worked on the Hill when private air transportation was banned by both Senate & House rules and that was a LONG time ago –they have fluctuated since – but not much. You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about! As for the congressman who was receiving “posh amenities” from defense contractors – he’s in Federal Prison now…why? Because it’s ILLEGAL!! I will add that during the few years that private air transport was admissible by Senate rule…your hero Max Cleland was notorious for using it. A good friend of mine was a pilot for a large Atlanta company and flew him all the time…and it was NOT official business…all pleasure! Careful with those stones in that glass house!

Craig, you are welcome on the comments. I appreciate your honesty and insight. Yes times and issues do change and this campaign is no different. Saxby is by far not a great Senator, but i do think he does some good for Georgia and in my opinion deserves re-election.
Now as far as the Democrats go, Cathy Cox can definitely rebound and is someone who can win a general election. I just think she and Jim Marshall, the only Dem congressman who can win statewide, are waiting on the 2010 Governor’s race because it will be an open seat and much easier to win than to face a popular incumbent. I also think if this was 2006 again and the picture for the GOP was as bleak then you would see a prominent Democrat challenge Saxby. However the fact is this is not 2006 and Saxby, according to recent polls, seems to be doing good with a majority of Georgians.
Again just my two cents and we can agree to disagree on this one.
