A political fishing tale

Once again, Gov. Sonny Perdue has shown why it’s so good to be governor.

Our colleague James Salzer reports that Perdue on Friday formally announced the winners in his “Go Fish” program, which will turn 10 fishing holes around the state into tournament-quality bass havens that the governor hopes will attract professional fishing competitions.

A lot of folks have mocked Perdue’s proposal to boost tourism, but he got the last laugh. Guess where the biggest, richest “Go Fish” trophy landed after state officials so artfully assessed the state’s best fishing spots?

Yep, Sonny wins! Perry in Perdue’s home county of Houston, the site of today’s announcement, is going to get a $22 million “Go Fish” visitor center and hatchery along with equipment needed to host a major tournament.

That’s out of about $30 million raised by the state, local governments and private businesses for “Go Fish.”

Nine other lakes will get the mega ramps needed to accommodate a major fishing tournament. Insider Advantage, the Atlanta-based political consulting and polling firm, was kind enough to create a map of the 10 sites.

Ahhh yes. It is good indeed to be the governor.

And the winner is………..As if that one took any thought. I suspect that Good Ole Boy Perdue is just trying to make good on some of those campaign donations. Why there’s a little lake down there just northeast of Perry that already has a little ole country club and it would probably make a real nice spot for a catfish tournament. Cook up some hush puppies, greasy fries, a nice fried catfish, and throw in a Pabst and you got yourself some good eatin’ — Southern Style.

there is alot of money in fishing, both casual and tournament. anything that brings out-of-state money into georgia has to be a good thing. as it is now i do my most serious fishing in florida because it is easier with better fishing than georgia.

I wonder if there is any connection between this whole expensive “go fish” boondoggle and Bass Pro Shop’s decision to place a big distribution center in Houston County. In politics, just follow the money.

Do I feel a bit of liberal political envy here? Which lake would Mr. Galloway and Mr.Kemper have chosen? Lake Lanier? Allatoona?

And why not a smaller lake in a smaller county where the economy could stand a boost? Oh, I see. The smaller lake is near the home of Gov. Perdue.

If the governor had chosen by drawing from a hat, would the fine staff of AJC been satisfied? I sincerely doubt it. Even a slippery fish is good enough for a slap at a Republican governor.

I think the AJC would like the chosen fishing holes to be in another state. Is Alabama too close to the governor’s home? Your politics are showing, gentlemen.
