Blogwatch: Franklin taking some heat for that Vick letter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
On his Mad Democrat blog, Javier Brown takes after Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin this morning for that letter to the judge she wrote on Michael Vick’s behalf, prior to his sentencing.
“I find it deplorable for the leader of our city to even get involved in this garbage,” he writes.
In the letter, Franklin notes that she confabbed with the fallen Falcons quarterback this summer.
“Knowing how much Michael means to the city of Atlanta, I sat down and talked with him this summer following his guilty plea,” she said.
Her most specific request:
“I ask that any sentence you impose allows this young man an opportunity to attempt a return to his employment with the NFL.”

A clear lapse in judgment.
The letters from Hammerin’ Hank and George Foreman are appropriate. They wrote as close associates of Vick’s, and it is entirely acceptable for them to personally contact the judge and use their celebrity influence to try to influence leniency.
Mayor Shirley Franklin is a different story. She contacted the judge as the Mayor of Atlanta. She is the top executive of the city; the top representative of law and justice for the city. Asking leniency for a confessed felon under these circumstances should cast doubt on her fortitude and conviction for administering justice at the city level.
The mayor, like everyone else, has right to her personal views and opinions, but she did not contact the judge as “Shirley from Atlanta,” she tried to use her position as an influencing factor. She was wrong.

Shirley Franklin had every right to write that letter and I’m glad she did it. Those of us who thought the response to this whole thing was disgustingly over the top have not been heard and I am glad that she gave us a voice. There is no way that man should have lost everything because of some dogs.
Oh and Javier Brown can eat it.

Letter to Judge Henry Hudson about Michael Vick,……………………. Dear Judge Hudson, Michael Vick wrote he did not know it is wrong to make doggies fight, and asked leniency because of all he has lost…………………………… I am a doggie housed in an animal shelter, that used to be on Michael Vick’s Dog Fighting Farm in Virginia. Michael Vick says he needs to be with his family. Well, I’m a doggie that saw my own family of mama dog, papa dog and all the puppies put to death by Michael Vick, either mauled to death in the dog fighting ring, or shot and buried alive by Michael Vick and his buddies, while we whimpered and moaned in pain, bleeding and helpless. …………………. Michael Vick says he wants to be with his family. But the only way I could be with my family is to sit on the muddy, frozen dirt where Michael Vick had my whole family buried………………. Michael Vick says he was never convicted of a crime before. Well, my whole family of doggies and puppies were executed by Michael Vick, and none of us committed ANY crime, ever — except the crime of being helpless animals, at his disposal. Signed, Fido the Doggie

SharonH, get a life where you’re not surrounded by fools and sickos who think it’s fun to torture animals. It’s probably too late, since you’re now one of them. You think I need meds? Here’s some common sense for you—Jeffrey Dahmer, Henry Lee Lucas, Ted Bundy, and Michael Vick belong to the same group—-people who enjoy abusing animals.
At least we know Vick won’t be moving up to people (aside from other prisoners) setting fires, or wetting the bed outside prison walls for the next 23 months. Ookie can discuss his mental problems with a state appointed shrink. You should go find one too. It might also help you get over your Thug Love Syndrome and general psychopathic tendencies.
Enjoy your ghetto weekend.

Actions speak louder than words…
Isn’t this what the judicial system teaches us??? Apparently the Mayor has no concept of that. How did you graduate from kindergarten, much less than get into office?
On what planet does a “Good person” or “Animal Lover” torture, starve, stab, hang, drown and murder innocent animals. These Vick apologists are truly as SICK and IGNORANT as Michael Vick is.
Your letter is an insult and an outrage to Americans everwhere—

MAYOR FRANKIN—
How do I tell my children that this man, who committed such atrocities toward such innocent animals is being backed by our MAYOR?? Where is your OUTRAGE at the barbaric, muderous acts Vick committed?!!
I’m sure many people would have described Jeffrey Dahmer as a “nice young man” too, but obviously his choices tell us otherwise.
Dogs feel pain, and all the emotions that humans feel, and they are completely dependent on human care and compassion, of which you obviously have NONE!! You LOSE my vote forever.

Michael Vick got less than what he deserved, but no amount of time in the clink can make up for the hell on earth he put those dogs through.
You don’t have to be an “Animal Rights Activist” or a “Dog Lover” to realize that what he did was sick, twisted and pathological. If it dosen’t make you either cry or vomit or both, you are not human.
I am starting to become concerned that most of the people backing him-(mostly black) regard dogs as nothing more than a piece of property, like furniture, there to be used, abused and thrown out when you are done with them. WHY is this?
Michael Vick should not be allowed to own any animals, ever again!!

I agree completely with other posters. The fact that Mayor Franklin is heartless and ignorant enough to support this MONSTER is sickening!!
Since you choose to buy the “front” he parades around, instead of reality, I urge you Mayor Franklin to read a detailed reporting of the specific acts this “wonderful person” has pled guilty to.
If you are truly willing to downplay the horrifying brutality and heartlessness of those acts, you do not belong in office, much less as part of the human race.
Educate yourself on this case PLEASE!

on www.gadab.org in the blog. great response
Dear Michael Vick,
That was some letter you wrote.
How nice that a judge permitted you to be home for the birth of your child, but I sincerely hope you don’t love your children the way you “love” animals: by drowning them, hanging them, starving them, electrocuting them, and smashing their skulls into the ground.
You say you’ve “lost everything” including your freedom, and I have to admit that would be difficult — especially since you were living the life of a super star. But unfortunately you’ve lost all that the same way murderers, kidnappers, sex offenders, or burglars lose their freedom: through their own actions. You weren’t singled out and imprisoned randomly — you committed heinous crimes. If not you, who should pay? Should we not insist that a child molester serve his sentence, simply because his only other recorded crime is a traffic violation? Your actions were unbelievably cruel. Do you get that?
You seem to think you lost your endorsements unfairly. Was it not you that committed these offenses? Is it actually surprising to you that an endorsement would not be desired by someone who actively causes excruciating pain and suffering to another? The public does not want to buy any product from a brand that represents itself with someone who finds sport in the torture and killing of animals.
As for being exposed to dog fighting when you were growing up, I don’t doubt it. Many people are exposed to ugly, horrific things in their lives — it doesn’t mean they grow up to perpetuate that ugliness. At any rate, I would expect a grown man — who has also been exposed to incredible kindness and generosity — to be able to tell the difference between right and wrong. “Growing up with” is a great excuse to perpetuate bigotry, child abuse, racism, and misogyny. At what point does one start thinking for himself?
And now you want leniency? How much more lenient could we be? In fact, we are showing you the very compassion that you deprived others. We are not torturing you or denying you medical treatment. We are seeing that you have daily meals and a bed to sleep in. We are not forcing you to spend your entire life tied up outside in below freezing temperatures. Why you think you should not have to pay for the crimes you committed is beyond me. You say you found religion? If you believe in an eye for an eye, you’ve gotten off easy.
I don’t doubt that jail is unpleasant. But you will never ever know the kind of pain and suffering you inflicted on others. As for wanting to be there for your kids, you should have thought of that before you decided to torture, maim, and kill other living beings. I believe that your animals, your kids, and even your houseplants are safer with you behind bars.

Zach— Thank you for so eloquently and completely putting into words what so many of us cannot. These latest letters have stirred so much rage in me, at Michael Vick and his supporters utter LACK of responsibility and compassion towards these animals. So many people do indeed grow up without a compass, without loving parents to guide them along, but they do not choose to torture and kill for fun. Innately, no matter how we grow up, we all know this is sick and wrong. If Michael Vick, and his supporters cannot acknowledge this basic fact, they belong in a mental ward. It should be illegal for him to ever own an animal again in his miserable excuse of a life.
Thanks again and have a great weekend!!

You animal activists are all right. It is completely fair to compare human life to an animal’s. I admire your wisdom in comparing a dog fighter to Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy, who killed human beings and ate them. I’m sure Michael Vick killed the dogs and mounted their heads on his bedpost as a sick fetish. You are a genius for making this brilliant comparison. Now I feel like America as a whole should go after everyone who has ever hurt an animal; I suggest that we ANIMAL ACTIVISTS go after the sadistic ranchers of America that kill cows and chickens inhumanely in order to feed America. Forget the fact that people enjoy and need God-given meat to survive; killing animals in an efficient yet unkind manner in order to keep meat and produce prices low enough for the general public is unforgivable. How would those cows’ parents feel? Furthermore, I feel like we should all work to imprison the owners and employees of every pet store across the country for disgusting torture and killing of animals. The way that they breed mice in cages just so that some sick little child can take them home and watch them run for their life and die viciously in the mouth of a snake/bird of prey should be against the law. We should put all pet store owners and anyone who buys feeder mice in jail for 23 months or more, because these people aren’t just fighting the animals but instead are guaranteeing their violent death. Michael Vick definitely deserves his sentence; we the general public are completely justified in judging his character; since he fought dogs he must be a sick twisted man. Never mind that he bought a church for his community, never mind that he supported handicapped children on his own accord, never mind that he has a family and personal issues in dealing with them just like the rest of us; he’s a sick, twisted, perverted man needing to be put away from society for watching dogs fight. Watching this man suffer in jail instead of out in the the real world helping numerous human beings in the community is the real spirit of justice. Forget the fact that he is one of the few athletes/superstars that are sincerely concerned with public welfare and philanthropy without their agents/publicists pushing them to do so. Forget the fact that he did all these great things consistently for the community of Newport News and Atlanta without expecting a news report written on him or a great expose on ESPN. (and make sure to punish the mayor for thanking Michael for donating millions of dollars and his time to the community) We should lock this father up forever because he made dogs fight each other. Atlanta deserves a better mayor who would rather see Vick in jail out of her own sense of self-righteousness than to see him donate a large part of his money and his fame in order to better the trouble kids and people of Atlanta. In addition, we should try to erase from all memory the fact that Vick comes from a very very dangerous and poverty stricken neighborhood from our minds when considering this issue. Forget the fact that drug abuse, gang violence, and dogfighting were omnipresent in his environment during the 18 years that he grew up in Newport News. Forget that he never gave in to a single one of those temptations besides dogfighting in line to becoming an outstanding athlete. Most of you would rather assume that athletes are “given everything” and hate the man for his natural talent. We should assume that a man with physical prowess should of course be immune to all negative temptations of his environment from childhood to adulthood. I want to end my rant by reiterating a fact that we anti-Vick fanatics should all believe; it is completely in the spirit of justice to destroy this man’s life for destroying the life of a dog’s. In addition, whats to separate a dog’s life from a cow or mouse’s? We should treat ranchers and pet store workers too like the scum of the Earth that they are.

dk, mmmmm…Jock. For you, it’s what’s for a 5:52am breakfast. Ask Santa for a new pair of kneepads, or the ability to use paragraphs. Preferably both.
Thuglovers keep saying “it’s just a dog.” You don’t want to admit your object of desire was deliberately cruel, he enjoyed making animals suffer. If it was “just a dog” he would have just killed them in the most efficient and painless way possible. Making them suffer was the point. Why else would you drown a dog? Or lift it over your head and throw it to the ground repeatedly?
And yes, that’s a hallmark of serial rapists and killers. Deal with it..you’re unable to let go of a freak’s jockstrap out of frustrated desire to be a sports hero, or psychopathic inability to understand causing suffering for enjoyment is sick behavior. Thank goodness you’re a rarity. Most people understand why Vick is in jail; idiocy and evil acts.
Despite your boring illogical, and ill-constructed rant, your thug is already up doing menial labor like cleaning toilets for 20 cents an hour, because of his choices. You really hate that, don’t you? Again, deal with it.
Along with SharonH, enjoy your ghetto weekend. And the aftertaste of your yummy breakfast.

I think the mayor of Atlanta should resign or else get fired. She obviously doesn’t know right from wrong. Vick is a convicted felon for ILLEGAL dog fighting and gambling, let alone his inhumane, immoral, barbaric treatment of animals. I would be ashamed to live in Atlanta knowing that my mayor “stuck up” for such a low life piece of crap. He deserves more than what he got and I hope the State of Virginia and the NFL tack more time onto his sentence.

dk- I am a black woman from Atlanta, love my Falcons, and my family once looked up to Michael. While I can’t say he is never due forgiveness, I can tell you that a person who commits the acts that he now admits to, does have some serious mental health issues on top of a very violent nature bubbling underneath. No amount of athletic talent, throwing money at causes, and going to church is going to change that basic fact.
I also don’t consider myself to be an “Animal Rights Activist” in particular, but I do believe that our ability to nurture and care our animals and children is what seperates us from Third World Countries. Dogs are unique in that they are loving, social animals by nature that crave human companionship, and as someone said earlier, they are completely dependent on the kindness and compassion of whoever the end up with in this world to give them that. Stop trying to compare what Michael did to everything under the sun, because there is no comparison. He was a grown man, who is solely responsible for the violent choices he made. He caused great suffering when he could have chose differently, and he needs to pay for that. Our children need to know that it is NOT ok to so willfully abuse dogs like that, and that you just can’t get out of your sentence because you happen to be a talented athlete.

dk- Seriously. Before you rant like that, you need to do yourself a favor, and read a detailed report of what Michael has actually admitted to. Honestly, I am a person that believes in second chances, but this is a person that I would NEVER see as a role model for anyone, let alone children, EVER. Yes, he will get out of jail, and yes, he will go back to his life, but I think there is really something mentally wrong with a person capable of such brutality. Remember, he lied about it continually, and only told the truth, when he was forced to. To think of him back on the street, smiling and waving like nothing ever happened, gives me chills. I will never watch another football game if he were playing.

I find it shocking that other athletes are so willing to attest to his “Moral Character”. Have they not bothered to hear the details of what he perpatrated against those poor dogs? Also- I own a pitt. He is the nicest, most loyal, loving dog I have ever known, and he was thrown away before a rescue group picked him up and I found him. Dogs should be considered as nothing less than a member of your family—I don’t know what I would do without my Jaxson. He is my best friend and to look into his eyes and imagine him suffering a fate like those other poor dogs did, it just eats me up inside. The man must do the time. If indeed you are a graduate of Notre Dame and are not African American then I can only assume that you are totally unenlightened. Why else would you find the thought of curelty to animals a menial topic of no big deal? It only goes to show that no amount of money can buy humanity. Male, female, black, white - those are merely labels our society uses to make quick identifications of it’s people. What really matters, what really counts is how we choose to walk the walk of our lives. Michael had oportunity, money and fame. The things that most of us only dream of achieving. Most importantly, he had choices. He could have choosen to marry the mother of his three children whom he claims to love. Yet he chose not to honor her. He could have choosen to enlighten and educate instead of deceive. While he was making his commercials, posing for pictures, signing autographs and playing ball he choose to break the law. Laws that finally are bringing this society out of the dark ages and holding it’s citizens accountable for their actions towards it’s animals and humanity. I feel that the only thing Michael is sorry for is getting caught. Black, white or purple our nation and it’s states inact laws to protect and defend those who can not for themselves. Unfortunately it takes a tragity for those voices to be heard sometimes.

How can you be so willing to brush the torture, starvation and murder of these dogs aside? (The “But Judge-He is a nice guy”) approach makes no logical sense whatsoever. Are you star struck? Hope he wore a condom, cause you don’t want the gift that keeps on giving.
No one brought him down, he brought himself down. Where are your standards? Obviously, you have not bothered to read the indictment to which he has pled guilty!!
He wont be returning to the NFL for the following reasons- 1. The fans are done with him 2. No ethical franchise would ever be desperate enough to have him as the face of their organization. 3. Endorsement deals? Also finished. What corporation would EVER want to be associated with a Herpes-carrying, bird-throwing, Dog Killer?? Seeing his face alone, gives millions of Americans the serious heeebie geebies!

Dearest “God Hates” 1. You obviously know nothing about Pitt Bulls, which is typical of anyone blindly supporting Michael Vick.
They are one of the most intelligent, loving, loyal dog breeds ever known. It is because of those traits however, that they are prized by idiots and thugs everywhere, they are easily trained, abused and mis-used by “Rednecks” both black and white.
When you grow up feeling powerless in the world, I guess owning a mean dog just makes you feel like you do have some sort of power…again, sorry for how you grew up…my family had nothing to do with that, and neither did anyone elses.
When certain groups of people begin to take RESPONSIBILITY for their own direction in life, then and only then will they stop inventing such ridiculous excuses for their violent behavior. Lots of ethnic groups in this country and the world have had it harder, but they helped each other along, WORKED HARD, prioritized getting an education and taking care of their families.
Think, just THINK about how that sort of “taking responsibility in your life might have helped you and yours.
NO MORE EXCUSES—they are old and tired……..

It is Bush’s fault that Trash knows nothing about pit bulls. It is Bush’s fault that Trash thinks that all evil in the world comes from the South. Bush is from the south and made it evil. I hate Bush.

Folks, let’s face it - your beloved Southrons are mostly criminals and carnies, filthy lazy drunken men and whorish slutty women. Perversion, debauchery, incest, and STDs are the cornerstones of your culture. You murder and rape each other at a rate three and four times that of other regions of the country, and this is what you animals consider normal. This has been true as long as there has been a South, long before liberalism, public education, and the mobile homes y’all are so fond of. Karl, you really can’t blame it on anything else but the general low morals, low intelligence, and general ignorance of the population there.
So, given the depraved diseased culture you live in every day, I just wonder why you are all so concerned about the death of some dogs.
Let’s face it, you southerners are trash, from a long long line of trash.
Let’s start a dialogue, but let’s start with the truth.

God Hates— Are you a comediene?
Who said anything about loving the South? I live in Boston. Also, if we are going to look at racial STATISTICS of the REAL kind, you probably don’t want to go there, because you will be horrified and so will I-it’s dismal and I will spare you the carnage.
Don’t listen to this dumb old Chinese man that knows nothing, listen to some of your own leaders and what they have to say…they are tired of the excuses too, because only getting an education and taking personal responsiblity for the choices you make every day are going to lift you out of your current situation. Plan for your familiy after you have been educated, and stick around to raise that family and support those kids in being the best they can be…only you can stop the cycle of poverty and powerlessness. Listen, stop the anger, and move forward. Stop defending violence and apathy and just reject it!! You can do it- I am rooting for you.
Good Luck

Karl, there is nothing funny about the gutter culture of the South - it is a land of violence, criminality, insanity, incest, debauchery, drunkenness and depravity, a land where rapists and murderers go about their evil business with impunity. Let’s face it - any place where so many lazy uneducated people congregate with easy access to guns is a potential powder-keg.
I am not defending Michael Vick - just given all the other perversion and filth that makes up southern family life, why focus on the killing of some deformed inbred mongrels?
(I am surprised you live in Boston - my guess is you were Southern educated, given all your spelling problems. Are you in the septic-tank draining business? I know southerners naturally gravitate to those sorts of occupations…)

Yes, arguing with some people is like talking to a brick wall, especially Vick supporters, who would find it convenient to believe that all people that care about animals are also KKK members.
You have to understand, it’s just all they’ve got. An athlete that has made it out of poverty is like a God to so many people, regardless of the crimes he has committed, they will put blinders on and try to defend him the only way they know how. It is much like listening to an absolutely insane person try to reason. I especially got a kick out of the guy defending him as “a father”…as in, “How can you put a father in jail over a couple of dumb dawwgs”? Haaa Haaa! With over 70% of black children brought into this world by single parent families, it is no wonder society is so screwed up. Being a “sperm donor” does not equal being a responsible, loving father by any stretch, and Vick is proof of that..only using them as bait in his letter to the Judge, in an effort to garner sympathy after lying, lying and lying some more.
The whole sordid story is just stomach turning.
