A coming together, ever so slowly — but loquaciously

Gov. Sonny Perdue and House Speaker Glenn Richardson appeared on the same public stage last week in Paulding County — the first time they had done so since the colorful ending to the legislative session in April.

Tuesday produced more evidence of rapprochement.

Richardson has proposed a dual funding mechanism to establish an emergency care network — and help Grady Memorial Hospital. One source would be hefty fines on “super-speeders” — which the governor proposed, unsuccessfully, last year.

A bigger source, as Richardson has pitched it, would be a $10 fee on license tags.

In a press conference on another topic, after the governor congratulated the speaker for finally agreeing with him on the increased speeding fees, Perdue made news. He didn’t reject Richardson’s idea of increased tag fees.

“I certainly agreed with the speaker that I would be willing to consider that. I don’t know that I gave him an acquiescence of agreement at that point. I’m not prepared to do that today,” Perdue said.

Acquiescences of agreement are hard to come by, as anyone knows. But we must have faith.

Baby steps. Baby steps.

I would think that a more common sense approach would have all accident prone traffic violations subject to fines that go directly to police, ambulatory services, jails, and emergency care. If these people choose to fight their fine then they can have it increased - if they lose in court - to cover all court costs as well. Now if we only had a republican that thought smaller government, reduced waste, and the corresponding less taxes was a good thing to acquiesce.

More tax increases from Georgia’s ruling Republicans.

These proposals are further evidence of the fact that Republicanism today is more about talking points and soundbites than core beliefs. What a disappointment!

There was simply too much news today, don’t let this one get lost.

The Christening of GDOT’s $300 million now $500 million later:

“William Tecumseh Sherman I16-I75 Interchange”

in Macon & Bbib County occurred this evening against a backdrop of swearing in ceremonies of our new Mayor & Council, which will soon be a very entertaining swearing at ceremony, every 2nd & 4th Tuesday.
