SCHIP invaded by illegal immigrants? House votes today

With the House set to vote today to reauthorize the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, or SCHIP, Rep. Nathan Deal (R-Ga.) has found a new reason to hate the bill. Illegal immigrants.

All of Georgia’s Republican congressmen voted against a similar bill in August that would have added at least $35 billion to the program, known locally as PeachCare, despite the program’s success and popularity at home. The vote today is on a compromise bill worked out by House and Senate negotiators

Taking their lead from President Bush, Georgia GOPers argue that SCHIP is a first step toward socialized medicine, a wild expansion of governmental powers and no longer doing what it was designed to do a decade ago.

Just hours before the House vote Tuesday, however, Deal warned his fellow congressmen in a “Dear Colleague” letter that the “deeply flawed” Democratic SCHIP bill would allow illegal immigrants to enroll in SCHIP and Medicaid at the cost of $3.7 billion over the next decade.

How would these illegal immigrants get into the program? Simple. A provision in the bill allows potential enrollees to show only a Social Security card - not documents proving citizenship - when they apply at the state level to get in the programs.

“While I am a strong supporter of the SCHIP program, I simply cannot vote for a bill that flagrantly encourages illegal aliens to break our immigration laws and fraudulently enroll in taxpayer-funded public assistance programs,” Deal wrote.

How Unamerican of you to vote in favor of ethics and the American citizens. I’m shocked beyond belief that a goverment rep would side with common sense and Americans. This is not the trend. Watch out LaRaza will be painting your house with slurs indicating you are a racist while others accusing you of hating children. This country is lost lost lost lost. But thanks for the thought and doing the right thing, not that I think there are many of you left, but I do thank you.

Wow, this is a profoundly stupid argument on the part of the congressman.

It is alredy illegal for employers to employ undocumented aliens. The representative is going to limit healthcare to uninsured kids as a way to make this illegal activity illegal again? Dumb, dumb, dumb.

And by the way, rich business owners are welcoming undocumented workers to do jobs Americans won’t take. So, why not punish the business owners and force them to hire Americans and pay a living wage? Ohhh —- right, the business owners are contributors. So much easier to punish the kids of hard working parents who do so much of the work in this country.

Does this representative have kids? If so, I’m sure he doesn’t have to worry about whether they get healthcare or not —- I’m sure the congressional health plan is pretty good.

I agree, thanks so much for the effort and the thought. It is comforting to know that at least one government official has not lost their basic common sense.

Don’t fall for the “racist card” when it gets slapped down on the table or listen when they try to hit you with all the other “politically correct” rhetoric that is sure to follow. Stick to common sense and vote in favor of your state and country as you were elected to

Did you know that there are literally millions of children that the US government denies basic health care to, simply because they are still in Mexico?

Outrageous.

This bill is outrageous. We should not be providing any care for foreign nationals. They don’t take care of us.

Thank you, Rep. Deal for wanting to protect your citizens from the illegal alien chiselers. We need more representatives like you to help us turn this country back over to the legal citizens. Enough of these parasites. They should self-deport and return to their home countries.

You take these jobs not because Americans won’t do them , but because you work so cheap and they don’t have to pay insurance and other payouts for you to work for them. If you where in this country Legal then they would have to pay you a days pay by the law ,which would have to be at a min wage at least. If they had to pay the right days pay for a day of work in this country then then they wouldn’t need illegals that they pay chump change to. There is nothing racist about this this is called working for chump change, What most of us here in America don’t like is when there is more illegals in this country working for chump change then there won’t be any more good paying jobs! That means that you can not get a good days pay which you deserve for your good work. This is just the tip of the ice - burg on this subject that I don’t hear any body talking about, instead all most can every say is your Racist, this is all most can every come up with, oh how old is this line, can’t people come up with a better line by now. Oh yea do the people out there understand how many Americans can’t even get health care for our own kids from our own Government, and we have paid Tax and money into the system and done work for the Government! So don’t expect me to show up for your self pity party on how people that are not even legal cant get help. Also by the way if there was any way to give food ,money and health care to every man ,women and child in this world , then lets do it right now ,I do not stand on any body and hold them down , let us all enjoy what is in this life all that we can.

Marge calls it ethical. Lilathe calls it common sensical. CheshireCat tries to drum up business for a red herring!

Is this GOP-code for non-whites?

To deny health insurance to millions of poor children on the basis that illegal immigrants (who’ve already broken the law) may fraudulently apply is worse than lame - it’s preposterously outrageous and you folks are nuts!

What are the pro lawless illegals suggesting? That you let the illegals fraudulently obtain medical benefits, and then prosecute and jail the illegal parents and kids?

How about voting against this incomprehensible give away, then passing a law to cover American kids?

Or does that make too much sense? Only if you have non-Hispanic Americans interests at heart, rather than only Hispanic American interests, like the Dem Party. Talk about racist!

Let’s be realistic. We don’t really have the money for the AMERICAN kids, let alone illegal alien children too. And by the way, this bill would cover children from families making up to $83,000 a year. We should cover America’s poor children now and deal with illegal alien children and their families separately.

My wife and I got laid off from our job after the contract was underbid. Our roots go all the way back to the Mayflower and our three kids cannot get any type of help from medicaid because our oldest son and my mentally disabled sister-in-law’s social security check somehow count as our income. The thing is that the place we went to apply as well as the charity clinics were filled with predominantly and overwhelmingly Hispanic. I hope the U.S. GOVT. COMES BARKING AT MY DOOR WHEN THEY NEED BODIES FOR A MILITARY DRAFT BECAUSE THEY WILL GET NADA FROM MY THREE SONS!!! MY FATHER AND NEARLY EVERY MAN IN MY FAMILY HAS SERVED INCLUDING MYSELF, AND IN FACT I LOST MY FATHER AS A RESULT OF VIETNAM. HE MUST BE SPINNING IN HIS GRAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just dont get it JUNE.

To deny is not wrong.

For a Dem Senate to propose a bill with such a loophole is wrong.

Put a proper bill with no provisions for criminal aliens if you want a yes vote.

Why should republicans support a bill that is 75% good and 25% flawed.

How about presenting a bill with no loopholes in the first place.

well said, just like our military personell go off half way around the world to fight and leave their families behind, these perhaps deserving kids should not have the option of sponsoring their parents in some back door amnesty scheme since they are adults by this time. They for sure can visit them in Mexico with or without proper documentation as I see no one on the other side of the border stopping people from going to Mexico, or visa versa for that matter.

I agree…….

When will our leaders start working for America? Even though we expressed our opinions on the amnesty bill, the Democrats continue to shove these illegal immigrant issues down our throats!!! After 35 years, I will no longer call myself a democrat.

Americans are blinded by the fantasy that “everyone” wants to come live in this country and “sponge” off of our taxes. It is well established, however, that the influx of Mexican families in this country coincided with our get tough at the border measures. In fact, the workers (men) would prefer to leave their families at home while they come here to work to make a nest egg. By making border crossings difficult, we made it too risky for them to visit their families in Mexico; thus, they brought the wives and kids here. Not surprisingly, they are loath to die in the gutter, so they take advantage of what few health programs this country offers, and that may cost you a few dolars a year extra. (Oddy, no mention is made of the huge amount of money the illegals pay into Social Security by using fake SSANs, with no possibility of ever recovering it). If Congress would do the sensible thing and create a valid and enforceable guest worker program, most of this mess would be solved to everyone’s benefit: the workers who could take money home and the schlubs like me who just want our houses reroofed. In the mean time, it takes a pretty hard heart to look at a kid of any color and deny him or her basic health care simply because you hate the family’s ethnicity (come on, at least be honest here). Clearly some of you fit that description, but money simply doesn’t seem that important to me.

Rep. Nathan Deal I would like to THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Illegal aliens have no education to speak and come to our state with an average of five different diseases like TB, lice and hepatitis A, B, & C and they have approximately 5 children per illegal woman. This is causing the taxpayers in our state to absorb all their school costs, food stamps, medical care and housing assistance to take care of them. Illegal criminals also use their false SS cards to qualify for Welfare payments and Medicaid. All the criminal activities results in about 15%-20% tax increases every year for the last five years to our property taxes. The national illegal immigration problem to us is not just another issue, but a fight and struggle for our survival and that our standard of living is being lowered every year. As you all know, Georgia’s population is only 8 million people and they have over whelmed us and are living 25 to 40 people per single family home. What would you have Representative Deal or the taxpayers do??

By cris

Jerry, it cost $10,000 a year per child for educating a child in the U.S., I hardly think there is an illegal immigrant at the wages they earn (even though much more than what they claim because contrary to the notorious punch line they do jobs that many of us would gladly and have always done) or what they pay into social security (especially at an average of 3 kids per family) that even comes close to paying in what they cost the taxpayer.

H.R. 976 (the SCHIP and Medicaid bill referenced in the article) does not require that you have a Social Security card. The bill says that you only have to have to give a Social Security Number, and if that number matches the name you give, then you are eligible for Medicaid or SCHIP. Under this bill, you don’t even have to show a picture ID as evidence that you are the person you are claiming to be. An illegal alien would just have to borrow your name and SSN and use it to get thousands of dollars in taxpayer-funded benefits.

Say this is your home (our home is America ) you come home one day and there is thirty people that have moved into your home with your two daughters one son plus your wife? (now stay with me here this is a lesson in math !, I will not say anything about race , because race has nothing to do with it, it is all in the math!!) You only have one bathroom, three bedrooms and a small kitchen, your bills for every thing to live in this house is say 1,800.00 You only earn 1,500.00 a month your wife only brings home $800.00 a month making a total of $2300.00 a month after your bills of $1800.00 a month this leaves you $500.00 a month for Food , clothes, Gas for transportation and whatever… Now you have 30 people that are living in your house eating your food ,using your water and every thing else running all your bills up to more money then what you earn a month so you go broke, homeless and evry thing else that goes with it. Wait you say every body helps with the money and the bills on your part is less, well we are legal so we have to live by the law that says only so many people can live in a certain size home, just as only so many people can be in a church or any other building as per say fire codes. So if all these people stay to help since we are legal then we would be fined and loose our home. Just as if you are legal American you have to have a home that has all the bedrooms you need for no more then two kids per room ( just for the say so because this is how the HRS does things ,if you don’t then they say you are a unfit father or mother, and take your kids away. Yea being Legal American is a great world, but you have to pay your dues. And there is still no easy street. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Nathan Deal’s reason for voting against SCHIP is about as smart as voting against a highway bill in case any illegals might be driving on the roads.

We certainly don’t want to flagrantly encourage wanton illegals to benefit from the taxpayers’ largess when it comes to concrete and asphalt.

It’s simply outrageous that the government provides ANY public services that might benefit illegal aliens.

Why, we should even consider closing down the defense dept. If someone tried to invade us, well, a military defense would certainly benefit all those horrid, free-loading illegals here within or borders.

No, it would be much better to just let al quaeda overrun us.

If I lived in almost any country south of our border or an impoverished country in Eastern Europe or Africa and I had children, I’d beat feet to get here if this bill were to pass.

When are our elected officials going to learn that any bill that ENCOURAGES illegal immigration is a BAD bill! I guess, sadly, the answer is never.

I am a middle class mom with 2 kids in college. Every year our insurance covers less while our out of pocket increases. I work for a social service program that provides free food and formula to women, infants and children. 95% of our clients are illegal hispanics and they can qualify with as little as a handwritten letter stating their income which I am sure many of them simply write themselves. They can also qualify with no documentation under the “Katrina policy” Many of the mothers have lots of babies back to back. Most of these families are also on medicaid getting free medical coverage on everything with no out of pocket expence. This is crazy and frustrating to me. Is there a cut off somewhere??? Carter
