Begala: Hillary and Mitt in the final chase, and Zell is still the best
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Democratic political consultant Paul Begala, who partnered with James Carville to make a governor out of Zell Miller and a president out of Bill Clinton, is teaching a course at the University of Georgia law school this semester.
Over the weekend, Athens radio talk show host Tim Bryant of WGAU (1340AM) sent us this sound clip of Begala’s thoughts on the ’08 presidential race. Hillary Clinton’s a sure thing on the Democratic side, Mitt Romney (who knew?) has the edge among Republicans.
And Zell is the best governor Georgia ever had. That came right out of the fellow’s mouth.

Zell Miller did do some good things as governor, ie. the HOPE scholarship, but he did some terrible things as a Senator, namely his blind support for Bush’s rush to war and his support for the surplus-killing tax cuts for the rich.

Begala is on point about the Democratic and Republican nominees for President. However, with respect to Zell Miller he is delusional. By any objective measure, Zell’s tenure as Governor is wrought with ineptness. His transportation policies resulted in the feds witholding billions, his juvenile justice policies resulted in federal oversight, his hard core criminal justice policies gave us a warm feeling but did nothing to reduce crime. He stirred racial tension for his own political end and after milking the discord as much as he could, walked away. Zell returned $120,000.00 of State funds only after it was exposed that they were ill gotten.
Any objective assessment of Zell Miller’s governance will reveal that he simply did not have the requisite administrative experience and skills that were so desperately needed at the time.
Zell’s tenure as Governor provide support to those who believe that administrative preparation, through training and experience, ought to be a requiste for being Governor.
