Cardwell on YouTube: A plea to ‘everyday people’

Former television journalist Dale Cardwell, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, is out with his first YouTube video, following similar — and similarly underfunded — efforts by rivals Vernon Jones and Rand Knight to take their cases to the Internet.

As might be expected, the production values in Cardwell’s ad are strong. And the spot looks like it’s intended specifically for fund-raising.

Says Cardwell:

“I’m not taking money from Washington lobbyists or the big-money PACs that special interests use to buy influence in Congress. That means I need to count on help from everyday people like you and me. Whatever you can give will help.”

Wow – how BAD was that!! Nobody is going to take this guy seriously until he drops that cheesy local news voice and just speaks to the camera. Problem is, he probably thinks it was great – that he nailed it – because he either memorized it or is good enough that you couldn’t see his eyes reading. But, he sounds like anything but an “everyday person!” He looks like a goofy, local news guy trying to impress folks with his, classroom learned, “see how clearly I can speak” inflection!

“I’m not taking money from Washington lobbyists”

You’re not taking or they’re not giving?

Gee Dale, what a sacrifice in the name of principle.

I always find it hilarious when no-name political candidates, who wouldn’t have gotten two nickels from lobbyists and special interest groups vow not to accept any money from them.

I am so glad to see this at last. I believe that many Georgians are sick and tired of being “served” by people who answer not to the voters, but to the corporations that put them in office. If senators had to wear logos like NASCAR drivers do, we’d all see who calls the shots.

Dale said from day one that he wouldn’t be taking money from lobbyists and PACs. He is sticking to his guns.

I admire Dale. He really is a great guy who wants to make a change.

Dear Mr. Cardwell or Campaign Staffer - Oh, I mean “Fact_Checker”… Nice try!

Dear Mr. or Ms. or Miss., howbadwasthat? I am not a campaign staffer but I have known Mr. Cardwell since he was a reporter in Nashville. He proved himself to be an honest representative of the truth then and he continues to do so now. I respect your freedom to express yourself in this forum. Would you not grant me the same privilege? Respectfully, Fact_checker

You can post anything you would like…please do…but, none of us have a “freedom” to do so. And I still think you are Dale, his wife, or a staffer! Our constitutional “freedoms” don’t apply to either of us in this realm -this is the privately owned website of a private company. They can write what they want and decide who gets to post based on the color of their shoelaces if they so choose. If you’re going to be a US Senator - you gotta get on top of what’s public and what’s private…come on Dale! Also, (for bringingsexyback) although I am very glad that the Democrats are almost certainly going to fall into the trap of nominating Vernon Jones - I do not work with, am not friends with, or in any other way connected to Vernon “pimp daddy” Jones…He’s a thug!

Never EVER underestimate the power of Old Media types to totally screw-up how they use New Media. Happens all the time. I’m going to go check-out “the product.” I’ll report back, with my All Things New Media perspective glasses on, momentarily…

Dear Howbadwasthat?, I bet Mr. Cardwell has better things to do than to reply to your ramblings. Come to think of it, so do I. I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Now, I feel GOOD!, (I knew that I would)

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised to see only eight comments in a 24-hour period on Dale Cardwell, and at least two of them appear to be from the Cardwell campaign staff. That lack of a response says a lot about how little enthusiasm he is generating among those of us who watch these things 8-10 months before the actual primary voting. I believe the AJC reported accurately that the national Dems have written Georgia off next year so those who were hoping for a major candidate like Barnes or Cox will just have to hold their noses as they watch Saxby the draft dodger slide fairly easily into another Senate term.

It wasn’t half bad. Really “too produced” for YouTube though. Too blatant an appeal for money. Too scripty. The lighting was way too nice for YouTube purposes; I hope Cardwell wasn’t charged extra for all that totally unnecessary production value. I kept wondering if someone was going to peep through the overly-prominent window shade. Saxby maybe?!

My unsolicited advice? Get outdoors, move around some, forget the tripod and the slow push, and the chair, and all the soft pretty lighting. Use natural light. Stage something in a kitchen or a backyard. Places everyone really relates to. No reading from telepromoters EVER on YouTube.

Good parts? Cardwell’s on-cam style and voice are great. He came across as quite earnest and honest. Audio was excellent, as would be expected. NEVER scrimp on audio whatever your platform is. NO one knows this better than me, the queen of dubious audio. Running time was perfect for YouTube useage. Not too long. Even a little bit longer wouldn’t have hurt this one, as he seemed to have something to say worth sticking around for. Usually you’d never want to go over 30 seconds on one shot for YouTube, but Cardwell seemed to get away with his one-take, one-shot approach.

Overall? Not a bad kick-off video. I give it a solid B.

And this entire critique is totally free to you PI readers. I usually charge outrageous consulting fees for this kinda advice.

I like the way you think SpaceyG! I too am in the “business”. I didn’t know about this video until I read about it here. I think it is better then his competition by far. I agree that a more “comfortable” setting will be beneficial. Natural lighting when one is young enough to take advantage of it is a plus too. I appreciate your critique.

Fact_Checker. Thanks! Love doing this kinda thing. I too “do video” for a living. Call me. Let’s do lunch, take a meeting.

I do more of the “still” part of the business. Magazines covers and advertisements. Many years ago, I did more video when I worked for an agency. Thanks for the invite. I’ll take you up on it sometime!

What has this blog turned into? A mutual admiration society for political insiders? SpaceyG, your task will be to convince Fact (I’m not on Cardwell’s staff) Checker to convince Cardwell to get out of his office and actually start meeting and talking to voters. I tried to convince Cardwell to do that about two months ago with obviously no success. Good luck to both of you.

Hi George, I really don’t know why it’s a problem for people to be cordial and express pleasant opinions about people and things. I respect your views and I even agree with some of them. I really like Dale. I’m not on his staff nor am I him or his wife. Give me a break.

I just like what he has to say. I am interested in the future of my family.

I fear for my five-year-old little boy when I think about some of the really bad things in this world. I remember a time in my life when I felt more secure about the future. I want to vote for people that will give me and mine a more secure country.

Anyway, good luck to you. I’m sure you have some really good things to say to Dale when the time comes.
