Blogwatch: More from Shafer on the Grady-Emory relationship

Far from backing away, state Sen. David Shafer (R-Duluth) is delving deeper into the relationship between the Emory University School of Medicine and Grady Memorial Hospital.

Specifically, Shafer is looking at the details of an audit of the contract between the two, made public last week.

Here’s the link to his latest blog entry. Why was the audit conducted? Writes Shafer:

Under the 1984 contract, Grady assumed all liability for malpractice by Emory’s physicians at the hospital.

Because Grady is a public hospital that enjoyed a degree of “sovereign immunity” when the contract was signed, this was not initially a costly undertaking. It simply worked to extend the benefits of immunity to Emory’s physicians when they were working at Grady.

But a 1994 Supreme Court decision significantly eroded that immunity, and Grady found itself paying millions of dollars each year defending and settling lawsuits for alleged malpractice.

According to the report, faced with these mounting bills, the Grady trustees felt it important that they make sure Emory’s physicians were actually at Grady, giving proper supervision and preventing financially costly mistakes.

It used to be the newspapers that did investigative reporting. As a Democrat that lives in central Dekalb all I have to say is THANK YOU MR SHAFER!!!

Please continue your search to expose the REAL problems at Grady. You are a true leader. Both political party’s in Ga could use more people like you. Don’t let them silence you. There are a lot of people paying attention to this.

In the meantime WAKE UP AJC. Firing most of your staff and providing fluff is not going to work. Becoming as useless as local TV news will not be tolerated.

These issues should have been looked into YEARS ago. Take off the Emory blinders!!!!!!!!!

I’ve never been a fan of David Shaefer’s. That said, what he has unearthed about the relationship between Emory and Grady is absolutely startling. I am watching this unfold with great interest in what comes next. Shaefar, at least on this issue, has shown incredible zeal and leadership. For that, he should be applauded. You know David, Cynthia Tucker made a point about race and ideology. She was right on how people perceive your motivations for involvement in these issues. She’s wrong to say that you should keep your mouth shut. It is, however, up to you to work beyond the very real barriers that divide us and let the truth continue to lead you. For some reason, I trust you to do that.

David Shafer is asking the tough questions. He has put to shame other state rep’s & state senators like Steph Stuckey, David Adelman, Kasim Reed, Stan Watson, etc., who have shown NO leadership on Grady.

Why is Dave Shafer the only person looking out for both the people that need Grady and the Fulton & Dekalb taxpayers who have had to pay for years of waste & corruption. Awesome work, Shaf!
