Blogwatch: ‘Gays for Giuliani’ is a big hug for someone trying to keep his distance

A sector of America’s gay rights community is showing its fun, Machiavellian side.

Last week, a group out of New York, “Gays for Giuliani,” put up a 30-second video spot up on some major Internet sites, soliciting funds to have it broadcast on TV in South Carolina, home to some brutal GOP competition for president.

Atypicaljoe.com is making sure it gets Georgia exposure as well.

The video, which originated on the Huffington Post, is a series of a tongue-in-cheek endorsements by characters that appear designed to inflame Christian fundamentalists. All sorts of puns intended.

“I am so grateful for Rudy for the domestic partner plan that he has implemented in this city, because I have had no less — no less — than five domestic partners,” says one character with tinted glasses, swathed in what appears to be a tablecloth.

The thinking, from what we can tell, goes like this:

Rudy Giuliani has angered some in the gay community for backing away from some of his pre-presidential commitments.

But withdrawing support from the candidate isn’t much of an option. Losing even a healthy sliver of gay and lesbian admirers can’t compare with the advantages of securing the Republican base. A loud break-up, in fact, might help Giuliani with conservative Christians.

So instead, the embrace. The jilted group makes sure that those essential to a Republican victory in the South know just how much Giuliani means to gay voters.

Now THAT’s funny! Get the ignorant bigots angry and turn their own bigotry against them. Clever stuff.

The end result will be the nomination and possible election of an anti-gay rights candidate. Real smart!

Anyone the Republicans nominate will be anti-gay rights anyway, to appeal to southern bigots. So where’s the harm in confusing and splintering the lunatics, and making their inevitable defeat even more humiliating?

The positive result could be the election of Dr. Ron Paul, the ONLY HOPE for America!

How ‘bout a RonPaul/Mitt Romney ticket?

Be sure to RE register NON-democrackkk so that you can cast your PRIMARY vote for Ron Paul!!! Register, Independent, Unaffiliated, or Republican !!!

I support Giuliani because he has had a progressive social agenda (gay rights, free speech, pro-choice) but he will also fight the Islamists fiercely. I don’t like this trying to attach him to some kind of “radical gay” agenda. Doing that will sink him as a candidate. An arch-conservative will defeat him in the primaries, and Clinton will win the election which will send this country straight up the creek. Support Rudy! He, more than any other candidate, embodies what America is supposed to be!

since when is someone a bigot for disagreeing with a certain lifestyle that is obviously dangerous and unhealthy to the participants? You people who are all for “whatever makes you happy is OK with me” wouldn’t object to a certain group of people wanting to marry their pets. In other words, you have no principles, nothing you can go to to say what’s right or wrong- it’s all about what you feel at a certain minute. Sounds like building your morals on a sandbar if you ask me.

Sam Miller, maybe you should get out and actually meet some real gay citizens instead of relying on your obviously ill-informed stereotype. There is nothing dangerous or unhealthy about the 18 year gay relationship I am in, in fact I’d say the fiscal, emotional and physical health of my partner and myself exceeds that of the average heterosexual US citizen. My principles are every bit as strong as yours and perhaps better given that I have been able to thrive despite the constant and yes, discriminatory attacks from people like yourself.

As to the topic, I had actually felt Guiliani was fairly progressive towards the issues that gay people face, but like most policiticians he will pander to the people he thinks will put him in power. However, that is not necessarily enough to turn me off…I think he would be a good leader on many other issues besides gay issues. My partner and I, who are both true conservatives don’t depend on the goverment to make our lives easier, and even though we have to go through more difficulty taking care of domestic issues that married heterosexuals take for granted, it is not an important enough issue that we ignore every other one.

JohnF, congratulations on your 18 year relationship! You’ve lasted much longer than pretty much every heterosexual couple I’ve known.

Perhaps the only person less popular than President Bush these days is Mike Vick. If the Reublicans have half a brain left (the jury is still out on the decision if they do or do not)Rudy may be the only shread of hope that the Republicans could muster up some support, widepsread across the country. Face it, Bush is the least most popular President in history and the fleas are jumping off that dog faster than we can count them jump off. Amercia will not tolerate another in your face good old boy type, just like America wouldn’t tolerate another Jimmy Carter type after his miserable term in office; we elected Reagan, a clear anti-Carter type. I never thought Hillary had a chance in the beginning, I saw it as almost a novelty act but the more and more I see her on TV, she is full steam ahead now. Mit Romney will not defeat Clinton, nor will the old John McCain or the no one knows him Fred Thompson. Rudy is your best hope not to polarize your party but you hard line Bush supporters just don’t seem to pocess enough poltical gray matter to notice this fact. The hard liners of the Repubican party, the ones with the faded W sticker on their trucks will get Hillary elected. Amercia is ripe for a change. Gone are the days if you disagreed with Bush, Rumsfeld was ready to be at your door as if your were a threat to your country. Bush is beyond lame duck, he the impotent man invited to the orgy without enough Viagra to generate any interest in him. A woman in 2008, imagine that…. and all because of Bush.

Sam Miller, as a Republican your hate will only drive the other side to the polls in numbers to vote for her. Newt isn’t running because he knows no one will buy into the over the top right wing agenda right now, that boat won’t float. position yourself more in the middle or you’ll have Clinton again. Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.

We heteros ought to shut up about gay marriage until we can figure out how to get the divorce rate for married couples down from the 50% range it is currently in- and I don’t think it is because of gays.

Whenever someone rails against gays, all I can think of are the people in the limelight who suddenly are exposed for having gay affairs- Ted Haggard, the former mayor of Spokane, the FL legislator who was recently accused of soliciting, the gay FL member of Congress accused in the page scandal, etc. It appears those who yell the loudest seem to be hiding something.

Sam Miller: “Non Sequiter Reasoning”. Look it up.

By Sam Miller

August 14, 2007 11:40 AM | Link to this

I find it humerous as to how predictable the responses are to what I said in my original post. A bunch of namecalling, and other puerile verbal tendencies.

Hi Sandi, “Non Sequiter” Latin-‘it does not follow’, I’m well aware, and didn’t have to look it up.

Also, it’s amazing how hate is read into what I wrote. I never said anything about hating anyone. You just cannot tolerate, wait, that’s the liberal’s word- “tolerate”, maybe I should say “put up with” someone having a different opinion than you on homosexuality. I have many gay friends that I don’t hate, even if I disagree with their lifestyle. Anyone interested in reading more might want to visit http://www.exodus-international.org/

Does everyone else reading this blog disagree with me? Is there anyone else who will stand up and speak out with me?

“I have many gay friends”

Do they want to marry their dog? Have you told them their “lifstyle is dangerous and unhealthy”? I think you should - if you’re a true friend - they’ve probably never heard it from anyone else before.
