Sounds like a crack job for our state Legislature: A ban on droopy drawers

Last night, Julius Stroud of Monroe County, a military retiree, spoke for an entire, baffled generation.

He asked his county commission — think Forsyth, Ga., down I-75 way — for a prohibition on young men who can’t keep their pants pulled up. Stroud wants an amendment to the county’s indecent exposure law, according to today’s Macon Telegraph.

“When I see these young men with their pants down on their hips or lower with their boxer shorts showing, or sometimes the tops of their butts, I tell them to pull them up,” he said. “Most of them do. I’ve done it enough, they see me coming, they pull them up. But some don’t. They just look at you.”

Stroud didn’t say anything about punishment, but I’m thinking suspendered sentences.

Commissioner Jim Ham perhaps had the most pertinent question: “Would this also cover plumbers?”

How soon we forget the “cute” Daisy Dukes the all-American girls are/were wearing - with azz cheeks hanging out.

Are we addressing that as well?

You folks are funny.

Daisy Dukes express sex appeal. “Thug wear” is different. If one has to explain, then you obviously don’t get it. (Battin’ for the other team?)

Has anyone done a study on the relationship between school achievement, unemployment, income level and hanging pants? Offending other folks rarely is the route to success, particularly when you are trying to get a firm grip on the ladder. But, let’s applaud the white tee shirts — some things are just better covered up.

I like the thug look. I have been wearing my pants around my butt with my boxer shorts hanging out the top ever since I got my M.B.A. and started working in Commercial Real Estate. All my clients love it, the other guys at the office are doing it, and I am a real hit at power lunches in Buckhead. I have also learned to talk like I have a mouth full of marbles and say ‘Yo’ as often as possible. I am now doing an easy 6 figures with 8 weeks vacation a year. Perhaps you nay sayers should give this a try.

I think they should ban baggy pants, for one they look stupid, and two, the could conceal weapons. I’m sorry, but I don’t see the guys wearing baggy pants as perfect citizens. They look like they are up to something and they gripe about how they are treated by “the man”. Well DUH! You look like you are about to rob someone. If you can’t walk two steps without grabbing your crotch to pull your pants up, your pants are too low. I’m so sick of the hip-hop/thug thing. GROW UP, get a job and stop trying to get stuff for free. These guys probably don’t have respectable father figures in their lives.

The baggy, droopy pants may be thug wear, but I really look at them as clown wear. And these people wonder why we don’t take them seriously and make them feel disenfranchised. You want to be taken seriously? Dress like a man.

I live in a fairly nice neighborhood, but there is a “lower rent” apartment complex outside the entrance. Every day, we get treated to seeing these … uh … young men … walking back and forth on the sidewalk between the complex and the nearby convenience store, apparently keeping their pants up (does having the too-big hat skewed sideways help?) by hanging on to their crotches, walking with the “pimp roll,” and leering and yelling at cars as they pass. Most often, they’re also discarding junk food wrappers onto the ground as they walk. Of course, this parade continues all day long, which speaks volumes as to their employment status and aspirations. My junior high school aged kids get a big kick out of laughing at them and ranking them on the “ghetto scale,” but I just see an increasingly bleak future for America.

i don’t really see how seeing someone’s boxer shorts is offensive. if it gets to the point where “private parts” are exposed, then there’s reason to do something about it.

why not let people dress the way they want?

Though I HATE it, I do recognize that it is a fad and a form of expression. Most of the young men that are “expressing” themselves through this “thug wear” as you call it are hardly thugs at all. By the time that most of these young men enter their homes their pants have been pulled up to a respectable level - hardly an act of a true “thug.” As for Daisy Dukes they are by no means “cute” little azz shorts that express “sex appeal.” I would no more be impressed to see my daughter in those than I would be to see my son in pants hanging below his behind.

My father, the police chief, loves the baggy pants fad. Everytime one of these thugs gets chased by a cop while they are runnning away from a crime scene, they trip on their pants and fall and roll - the cops don’t even have to try hard to catch them and lock them up!

Steve at 10:43,

“something that people don’t even do anymore”. I was on Marta home from the airport last night (riding home to my ITP house) and 2/3 of the young men getting on and off the train had their pants down lower than their hips. I was rather amused at how hard they had to work to keep them up and the clown walk to keep from tripping.

Julius Stroud of Monroe County, a military retiree, has got to be prepared for this fight. The problem is much deeper than young men who can’t keep their pants up. Children and young adult are pawns caught-up in the very jaws of evil organized forces. Many are prominent people in every area of people activity, economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion sex, and war that would like to see chaos and evil in the African American community and American communities at large.

On one of many problematic occasions during the early 1990s, a friend of mine was employed as a teacher at the local neighborhood elementary school. Several of the children were attending school with their pants drooping. He was determined that none of his students would be attending class with droopy drawers. His determination proved to be fruitful. In less than a month, all of the boys were in compliance; there were no droopy drawers.

The principal of the school discovered that the teacher did not allow droopy drawers in his class. As a result, the teacher was removed from the classroom. By the next year, many of the children were attending school showing their underwear.

Today, we live in a world filled with people who are energized by satanic forces. These forces are legitimized in the minds of people because they are being rewarded monetarily. As a result, they have no ability to determine right or wrong; good or evil.

Good luck Julius Stroud in the ongoing struggle between good and evil.

I think if the community leaders told the young men what this fad actually meant it would stop in no time. From the way it was explained to me it is a fad from prison. When a prisoner is walking around the cell block if he is wearing his pants low he is advertising he is open for buisness. If you get my drift. Now if this is what this generation is trying to say we are in even worse trouble than we thought

Diogenes, I don’t care what your opinion is on this topic but I believe letting your children mock the children who live in the “lower rent” apartment complex and rate them on the “ghetto scale” is abhorrent. What you are teaching your children is far more detrimental to our society than baggy pants. Why not be a role model to not only your children but perhaps some of these “lower rent” children who could benefit from your guidance? You are what is wrong with society!!

They have a right to wear their droopy pants, gold teeth, bling, hats side-ways, piercings and to mumble their way through life with a vocabulary from the ghetto —- but I also have the right not to hire them to represent my company.

After spending time standing unemployed on the street corner, maybe they’ll mnake the connection.

Probably not. My guess is they’ll not make the connection and being unwilling to do without what they cannot afford, will rob or steal your stuff.

Of course, the companion piece to this is the “prone” driving position that’s so popular. How many times do you see the $600 Honda or Toyota with the $1200 rims pull up next to you, and hear the open-windowed pounding bass beat that is so grossly distorted you know the speakers are about to blow … and when you look over, all you see is the top of a head (usually with the skewed, too-large baseball hat) looking like it belongs to someone lying in the back seat? As someone very familiar with auto crash scene investigations, do you have any idea what happens to a person in a frontal impact when their seat is reclined that far??? Darwin at work, I suppose… .

This fad is a sign of the decline of our society. It came from watching criminals get arrested. Police removed their belts, the pants sagged and the thugs began to imitate the beltless criminals getting arrested. In their community, it is a rite of passage for males to go to jail. They have high expectations of themselves (sarcasm). This “fad” needs to stop. Nothing good has come from it, just negativity and they don’t even realize it. It’s a shame.

Oh arb, get off the high horse. I carefully counsel my kids (who, by the way, have many, close African American friends) that NO one is EVER to be criticized or put down because of their economic status. SOme of the finest people I have ever known are poor, and most of the worst have been wealthy.

BUT, this has nothing to do with that — it has EVERYTHING to do with personal behavior and choices. NOTHING about being poor dictates that people dress like clowns or throw trash on the ground. In fact, my kids mock the RICH rap and hip-hop stars the most.

Get real … .

James Russell Lowell, in the Boston Courier, December 11, 1845.

Once to every man and nation, comes the moment to decide, In the strife of truth with falsehood, for the good or evil side; Some great cause, some great decision, offering each the bloom or blight, And the choice goes by forever, ’twixt that darkness and that light.

Then to side with truth is noble, when we share her wretched crust, Ere her cause bring fame and profit, and ’tis prosperous to be just; Then it is the brave man chooses while the coward stands aside, Till the multitude make virtue of the faith they had denied.

By the light of burning martyrs, Christ, Thy bleeding feet we track, Toiling up new Calv’ries ever with the cross that turns not back; New occasions teach new duties, ancient values test our youth; They must upward still and onward, who would keep abreast of truth.

Though the cause of evil prosper, yet the truth alone is strong; Though her portion be the scaffold, and upon the throne be wrong; Yet that scaffold sways the future, and behind the dim unknown, Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.

I didn’t realize that if someone wore baggy pants that it made them automatically “low income” or that they would “steal your stuff”.

Look back at the original post. There were no over-generalizations about the background of the individuals the prohibition would target. Y’all added that in their yourselves. As ‘arb’ put it, you are what’s wrong with society.

Mr-I have also learned to talk like I have a mouth full of marbles and say ‘Yo’ as often as possible. Please keep in mind that the group of people that you chose to unsuccessfully mock, are the same ones that your children, brothers & and sisters try to emulate. And before someone makes the remark that I must be this or that or they are referring to my brother , sister or child..No I myself am also not a fan of the sagging pants but I am very tired of reading day after day the many ways that this so called “cutural melting pot” has used any means necessary i might add, these blogs as a way to vent the many many prejudices and major misconceptions of the the many classes of people that reside here as well as across the country. Understand that the remarks are not going to make anyone dissapear as badly as you’d wish that to happen. Look at yourselves and the ignorances that you bring to light. In my opinion the comments, and characteristics some of you have are far worse than a young man walking around with no belt. Try your best to degrade the next man woman or child is not a quote I’m familiar with. However Each one teach one is. So rather than stick your foot out to trip a person so they fall. Reach out and lead them in the right direction.

Thank God, thank God, thank God. Where can I send my letter of thanks and gratitude to Mr. Stroud for ridding our society of this outrage? Every night when I lay in my bed, I think of all the war and famine in this world, the poverty and the crime in our very backyards, the drought, the heat wave, hunger and the sick and the elderly I see everyday while practicing my profession of nursing. Then I ask myself: what are going to do about these kids and their droopy pants? It overwhelms me. It is the first thing I think about when I waken and the last thing I think about when I go to sleep. If only it could be stopped, then all would be right with the world. Thank you Mr. Stroud for using your power to take care of it for us.

May I suggest that we criminalize this offense with prison terms, stiff fines and a registry of the offenders? Please?
