Keen: The Vick case could unleash anti-dogfighting bills

House Majority Leader Jerry Keen (R-St. Simons Island) said the Michael Vick case could give new life to efforts to shut down dog-fighting in Georgia.

“It’s horrifying. I don’t know if it’s true — it is an indictment. But if they are, it’s hard to imagine human beings being able to do that to animals,” the No. 3 Republican in the House said today in a press conference at the state Capitol. “I’ve already had calls from members of the [House Republican] caucus, asking if we’re going to address this.”

Two anti-dog fighting bills, S.B. 16 sponsored by state Sen. Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) and H.B. 301 sponsored by state Rep. Bobby Reese (R-Sugar Hill), stalled in the House during this year’s legislative session.

“I would not be surprised if one or both of those bills get some legs,” Keen said. One loophole in the current state law may be a lack of prohibitions against the training of fighting dogs, “rather than the actual act,” Keen said.

Rogers has said much the same thing about the impact of the Vick investigation on animal law in Georgia — but Keen’s remarks are more significant. S.B. 16 passed the Senate unanimously. The antagonism toward tighter restrictions has come from the lower chamber.

FOR ANYONE WHO HAS EVER OWNED A PET…… PLEASE HELP

http://www.hsus.org/

Go to the “Humane Society’s Homepage” to send the NFL commissioner a special note regarding this horrific crime.

Help the HSUS hunt down the pieces of human garbage who participate in this senseless act.

*As humans, it is our responsibility to protect and care for animals……. *

The State of SC has many problems and “warts”, but thanks to humans of conscience and a humane legislature, laws against this barbaric practice are in place and stringently enforced. No Christian or humane community can possibly allow such activity. It breeds contempt for all human kindness and decency and lawfulness. It goes hand in glove with high stakes gambling, drug use, gun use, murder and other assorted felonies. The cruelty involved is unspeakable and is passed from generation to generation. Please act to stop the violence. Thank you. Donna Underwood

I would also like to appeal to all those not affiliated with special interests groups to also write the Commissioner and remind him that animals are not humans and that this is America and due process is afforded everyone under the Constitution, of which, I do not recall, giving four legged animals a Bill of Rights.

WOW! so, the enlightened legislature of GA is going to make dog fighting illegal!!! How impressive is that! once again the state is making great strides to enter the 19th century. About 40,000 people are involved in dog fighting in this country and while it is pretty perverse, priests in the Catholic church continue to escape punishment for sexual abusing children. What a bunch of great Christians they are. That is a real tragedy in this country!

If that story is true that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is going to let this sick individual play football, it will be a cold day in h*ll when I let my 2 son’s go see a person like that play football. Aruther Blank can kiss my money goodbye if he is on the field b/c I am selling my season tickets b/c I refuse to give money to a person and a team w/ no moral values and a complete disregard to life. This garbage about letting the legal system take its course is a bunch of garbage. If thats the case, give Vick a leave of absence, continue to pay him but do not let him play. I would have more respect for Blank than if he did nothing. And if anyone does not think this guy was neck deep in this stuff, white, black, green, it does not matter what skin color you are, than you are a complete idiot!

For Tyger… It’s people like you that have made this world the way it is. We are supposed to be human beings with feelings ( that obviously you don’t have). No the constitution does’nt give animals any rights (that excludes you), but it also does’nt give anyone the right to to torture or kill them for their sadistic entertainment purposes. When I read something like you have written it makes me believe that you would kill humans the same way,but they are protected by the constitution. Let me tell you something, the constitution has nothing to do with murdering low life trash like vick and his cohoarts and you either, because you sound like you would like to be right in there with them. People like you and them don’t belong in America. Go to Darfur or some other place and you can kill all you want you worthless piece of garbage!

First of all, I do still believe that a man is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, not the court of opinion. In deed, dog fighting sounds like a violent an inhumane sport, but so is football, hockey, boxing, mixed martial arts, etc.

But, before you respond as an advocate for due process or “hangem” on suspicion of guilt, or those are humans doing violence to themselves willingly. What truly bothers me about this case is the miss allocation of federal resources. What I mean is, I’m sure we can all think of better ways that the F.B.I. can allocate resources to find drug lords, murderers, terrorist, etc.

Sure, going after Vick makes headlines and might even get a couple of new laws talked about. But will any of us be saver tonight when we drive home from work or tuck our kids in bed tonight??

Oh good grief, cant I care about people not being killed and also care about animals not being abused! Why does it seem that anytime people care that animals are being abused it is perceived that we dont care about humans! It is a crime, a federal crime, when there is dog fighting, there are usually other crimes going on at the site also. Dog fighting is not the same as football, boxing, hockey, those people CHOOSE to get bashed around, dogs do not!

By JuliousLary

To BV. My argument is not that you or anyone else should not care about animals. Save every stray cat, dog, bird with a broken wing and beached whale that you can. But it still does not change the fact that are federal law inforcement agencie has much bigger fish to fry. By the way, if you want to see inhumane treatement of animals check your freezer.

mychelfromatl your idiot to begin with to make that statement. To even equate someones color to a barbaric activity like dogfighting and to say its alright, hes black. If Tom Brady or Peyton Manning was caught with 30-40 dead dogs, they would have had the same backlash that Vick is getting. It’s called its illegal, and anybody to think its alright needs serious mental help. I will bug my congressman to please pass ANY dogfighting laws. Its time is come and it just showed the state of Georgia up that they need to come in the times. And mychelfromatl I hate you too.

Jerry Keen has a bit of a problem. A bit of a “Matt Glavin” problem, if you know what I mean. He and Florida State Rep. Bob Allen have a little something in common. Jerry can distract everyone with proposals to restrict dogfighting, but those in the know are more worried about how Jerry likes to “dog” his way around certain well-known meeting places. More will be “coming out” about this soon.

To the comment about wasting federal money on this case: you obviously know nothing about law enforcement. Every officer worth their salt will tell you that dog fighting and other under world activities- DRUGS- to name one, goes hand in hand.

And to Galoco_lee: I realize from the content of your comments this will not make any difference to you, but I will say it anyway. These dogs do something that most of the fetus’ you refer to aren’t able to do - breathe on their own outside of the womb. Your point only carries weight if you believe life begins at conception.

And to Tyrone: Don’t paint us all with the same brush just like I assume you don’t want to be painted. I can’t stand the idea of shooting an animal and then further having the audacity to stuff it! This isn’t a white/black issue, it is a human being issue!!

Or the fact that the value of human life has been cheapened over the last generation due to a loss of values, morals, religion, etc. It is pathetic that today as a society we focus more on animal cruelty than child abuse which includes abortion.

Is it any wonder why Islam believes that western civilization is corrupt and should be destroyed?

Attitudes of CNN, viewers:

Should Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick be allowed to continue playing professional football while he answers charges of sponsoring dogfights?

If the Atlanta Falcons have no concept of the meaning of compassion toward innocents that cannot protect themselves from cruel, heartless, creeps like Michael Vick, then they should let him continue. There are no excuses, justifications, nor any good reasons to protect this guy. They should cut him loose ASAP! -Patsy, Salado, Texas

Jack, this monster (and I’m being kind here) should be permanently banned from ever playing professional football again. I realize you are innocent until proven guilty, but this isn’t Vick’s first run in with the law… When federal prosecutors get done with this criminal, Michael Vick is going to find out what a dog-eat-dog world this truly is. -Larry, La Mesa, California

Should the NFL suspend Michael Vick? Yes, and maybe he should be locked in a pen for a few minutes with a pack of angry dogs. -James, Vancouver

From what I’ve read and seen so far, I believe to a ‘reasonable’ person, there’s enough evidence to evict him from humanity, not to mention, some football team. What a waste of a human being. This whole matter has just made me ill. -Ann, Signal Mountain, Tennessee

I find this man sickening and I’m ashamed of the Atlanta Falcons for not suspending him. He should be in jail along with his cohorts. -Lucy, Tampa, Florida

Vick and Blank, should divorce themselves from the city of Atlanta immediately

Face it people without MV7, the Falcons are gonna totally suck for the next 5 years. Think about what you’re asking for. Releasing Vick, or isolating him from the team will cripple this franchise for another 10 years and we will quickly revert back to an empty dome and our normal place at the bottom of the NFC….,,,

Oh yeah, there have been numerous callings for Blank to step down, sell the team, suspend Vick and so on. I have followed these AJC blogs for some time now and it seems as a concensus that many don’t like the job that Arthur has done. I totally disagree with you. I think that Blank is the best owner the Falcons have ever had. He consistently puts a competitive team on the field. Though he is a little “hands on”, I can appreciate that a little. I mean he is new to NFL ownership and he is learning quickly. He will soon bring a SBowl to Atlanta, that is if he still has MV7 at his disposal…Get it….

Idaho and Wyoming, the only 2 states where dog fighting is NOT a felony, have a lot to answer for.

And for those of you who are “worried” that animal cruelty is a minor issue compared to serious crimes… animal abusers inevitably turn their violence toward humans, too.

So dealing with them now makes us all safer—if you need convincing that the dogfighting itself isn’t sufficient reason to act.

Vick and OJ show us that no matter how many guilty black men are supported by their community and eventually allowed to get away with awful crimes, that it won’t bring back one single wrongfully treated ghost from the past. if the black community continues to support this guy even as more evidence will come out, and do everything they can to make this into a racial situation, they will get more of a backlash than the one that came after they kept kicking Imus ‘til he was down on the ground begging for mercy. more than ever the black community has no choice but to turn the looking glass back on themselves, and good people from every other race are so tired of being blamed and mistreated by angry race-baiting blacks, that are just using the invalidation of others as a tool of manipulation so that they can special treatment. case in point, if this was that Caucasian-American Joey Harrington, he would already have been suspended. it’s time to stop making everything about race. it’s like if a black person burns their toast in the morning, somehow a white person must have caused it. and this weekend, the black arts festival, why do we need to keep promoting separation along racial lines, why can’t we just have an arts festival? we can’t get past race, because black people won’t let us, and I don’t think they know how they would go forward without the race card. it’s kinda scary, but it’s gonna happen. just 5 years ago white people were unable to defend themselves in racial situations. that has slowly started to change. and all the old guard from the civil rights days are dying, when they are gone, and no black alive will have lived under Jim Crow, then what will they say? at this point the race card is losing most of it’s value, and for black people to continue to use, will only discredit them and make them look like a group that can’t be taken seriously. Bill Cosby and others are right and whitey doesn’t want to fight with you anymore. just think if the black community went out of their way to reach out to the white community and do everything they could to diminish racism. it would work, you’ll neveer completely get rid of bigots, but we have a lot more than we need right now, and racists come in all colors. just think if when black people gave to a charity, it didn’t have to be a black charity, sure that doesn’t happen all the time, but it happens a lot. could you imagine a white person saying, I want to help others but let’s look for people that look like us before we do, that would be racist. black people control their own destiny, you can start working with other groups of people that don’t look like you, or you can hold on to that race card until it pulls you down with it.

releasing Vick doesn’t have to hurt us for 10 years, kind of like a relationship where you love the other person but together you’re just destructive. and even if you love that person, you can’t be with them anymore. and that’s what this is like. Vick and the Falcons need a divorce. the Falcons need a fresh start, even if it’s going to be hard. and Vick might need even more than they do. to start all over with anther team and city would be the best thing for Vick and it would help Atlanta and the Falcons too. Vick has had his chance to make it, and no matter how many other people are blamed for his failure here, Vick had a chance, and to me, he’ll never be a real NFL QB. but as Roethlisberger showed, it doesn’t take ten years to find a QB, you just have to pick a QB that doesn’t want to showboat first and throw second.

how is that Republicans have been the ones to stall this much needed legislation? how is that people that go out of their way to tell everybody they are Jesus’ chosen people, are the ones that are unwilling to do what Jesus would do in this situation? why is it that Jesus was so much in favor of caring, compassion and kindness, but Republicans imply that is a weakness, if you try to save that spotted owl or stop that dogfighting you’re a wimp or a liberal? how is it that the chosen ones are the ones that would devalue a word that means: freedom and generosity. a word like liberal. how is it the supporters of Jesus would support dogfighting? we are supposed to hunt and kill for food, we are supposed to eat animals or nourishment, but we aren’t supposed to torture them and then just wastefully toss the animals carcass into hole in the ground.

We need to stop making sports players our heros or our children’s heros. This is what happens. They think they are invincible. They can do anything illegal and attempt to get away with it. Cruelty and violence is just that. Towards anything and everything. Oppression is oppression whether you’re human or animal. Get a clue. We are all included in the “circle of life” and hanging a dog to death or throwing it to the ground to kill it because it didn’t “fight well enough for you and make you money” is sick, wrong, twisted and Vick deserves to be bitten right back in the a* for this. No matter what happens, he will always be scum in my eyes for this. Always.

Elijah— I just want to thank you for telling us how the black community feels on this issue. I have been a proud Michael Vick fan and love to see him play. However, I have also been sickened by his off the field antics. This latest issue is more than that. As an African-American woman (and owner of a signed MV7 jersey), I am ashamed for him. If convicted, he should get all six years of federal time. When I think of the substantial difference his position and wealth could have made and to see it flushed away with a series of bad decisions, I am upset that young black boys may have veiwed him as a role model. I don’t expect to see him on the field again, but I’ve got to tell you I wouldn’t stay around to watch it.

As a Black person living in Atlanta.Let me bring to everyone’s attention, the fact that not all Black folks support M Vick. I recognized a long time ago that he is a want to be thug (as is his brother). This broad paint stroke that I am reading, assuming that all blacks support dog fighting is absurd. The same individuals that are running to his support should ask how much of the 130 million + salary is used within his community. What I see is OJ being replayed all over. OJ had nothing to do with Blacks before or after his case. Yet you saw so many vocal young black men and women running to his defense. We have so many Black sports figures who are making a difference (Warwick Dunn)in our community. They are the ones that need our support. Because someone can run fast does not absolve them from doing the correct things that make them a good human being.

the black community could do more to diminish racism, and right now, it’s up to them, others have decided to stop trying and we’re all tired of getting blamed for things we haven’t done and being labeled racists just because we didn’t happen to be born black. when you see something as horrible as this, once again being turned into an OJ situation, what are others supposed to think? the black community needs to move back to the ways of Martin. and this is the way, if this is made into a racial thing, in the end it will only hurt black people.

there will never be another Oj kind of thing. that was a one shot deal. people have had a lot of time to look back on that one. if this turns into a Oj type deal, God help this country. because nobody and I mean nobody will benefit from it. it would be like saying the DC snipers were being picked on because they were black. look out, slippery slope ahead. the best thing that could happen now would be if Mike Vick asked to be traded. it would benefit him and this franchise. if this was his first screw up he might have a better chance. if he had more wins (sad but true) he would have a better chance. but the evidence is there, and even if there are other crimes out there that also should be taken care of, they stumbled on Mike and now he’s busted. it’s like the guy that tells the cop after being pulled over for speeding, ‘look at that guy, he’s going faster than I was’….and what does the cop say to that? ‘yeah, but I caught you’ all of this was only possible because they had a financier…Mike. this has happened and mike was involved, it isn’t about whether or not he gets convicted, but how blacks and Mike handle this situation from this time forward. racism of any kind is a crutch and a weapon used to hurt others. it’s 2007 it’s time to look on the bright side instead of always focusing on if the racial boogeyman is out to get anybody.

When Mike Vick first hit the Atlanta scene, I considered him an Atlanta Falcons’ savior, as well as an incredibly gifted athlete. He had everything this team needed! I was so proud that he was a Falcon! It DID NOT matter what color he was….he had my respect. However, any person of any color that is convicted of these horrific crimes/actions, deserves to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. I can not believe that some of you are saying that it is “only a dog”. What is wrong with you?! Do some of you really believe in these despicable acts of torture to a defenseless animal….because if you do…GET HELP right away! I am disgusted with the “act” of animal cruelty, not the fact that Mike Vick is an African American, but the act of cruelty itself! So please STOP making this a race issue …it is NOT! To all the indviduals that say race isn’t an issue, you’re in denial. This country’s makes their laws based on fear and racism. Look at all the drug laws from the 1900’s on. They all are racially motivated. In the USA the whites are galvanized into a feeding frenzy when the cause/witch hunt involves a Black man, especially a dark-skinned rich one. Look at the money spent on Barry Bonds…..why…..because he’s polarizing and Black. Tom Brady was connected to BALCO but we hear not a peep. Benoit killed his wife and son but we hear not a peep. Kearney had a rape take place at his home but we hear not a peep. Blank just left an African where I’m sure he did some sport hunting, but we hear not a peep. This is a very racist society we live in, you can hide your racism behind a bullcrap cause all you want. The fact of the matter is, a dark-skinned Black guy that runs really fast, reflects the environment from which he was raised, and plays the QB position is a threat to all the slow, lethargic, pocket passers coming up now. So do what you’ve done for centuries, destroy another Black guy that’s idolized by his people. Even better get a hard nosed judge that thinks just like you. Jim Crow will never die, he just changes his tactics.

Houston we have a problem The law , and race . From the 1600 till now 2007. Black people do wrong every day and white people do wrong every. check the number . They make money from locking black up we are now a cash cow for the prison system all across america. when it come to court system in america the law for most black people the only fair we get is ” fair come’s in October and leaves in Novenber. that is the fair we get . look at the numbers! If you get a felon charge as a black man your life for the most part is over. no one hires any body in a real jobs most time that has a felon charge. Even when you clean up you life it Over in america. when you do your time your record should be clean. And that is by far killing black men in fact any man. The system after you do you time never for gives and that is WRONG. Vick as a young man has done some dumb thing, but name one of us that has not done wrong thing that broke the law just did not get caute. But reading this and other blogs they are so self rightious and are hipocrite. Vick I forgive you , but you must change . But men hearts has no forgiveness they just want your head and blood. Land of the free . no matter how you look at it blacks brown and poor whites are second class the facts speak for them self. The system that sucks if you of color!
