Whitehead: It’s all about Athens versus Augusta

Jim Whitehead, the Republican front-runner in the run-off for the 10th District congressional race, says the contest is a regional tug-of-war between Augusta and Athens, the Augusta Chronicle reports today.

Whitehead, a former state senator from Columbia County just north of Augusta, said he knows which side he’s on. And by a strange coincidence, his opponent in the July 17 election is Paul Broun of Athens, also a Republican.

“I don’t think you realize that the people in the middle of this state that are trying to win this seat will tell you up front - that we don’t need somebody representing this area. We need somebody in the Athens-Clarke County area, so they can get things moved there,” Whitehead said.

The newspaper said Whitehead has heard this said so many times that he’s “frankly sick of hearing it.”

Said Whitehead of his poor treatment by Athens and its editorial voices: “If I was somebody who went just by newspapers, I would swear Jim Whitehead was Satan reincarnated in Athens-Clarke County,” he said. “And I wouldn’t vote for me, either. It’s unbelievable the things they will go to and the things they will say just to try to get somebody in this position for Athens-Clarke County.”

Regionally, Augusta usually serves up slightly more voters in an election than Athens. But Athens’ voter roll has more Democrats, who may not show up.

Hey idiot, when you talk about bombing a town off the map, they tend to take it personally. Perhaps not declaring war on Athens and labeling it some far left hellhole will get you better feelings from the area. Once again, your foot is inserted in your mouth. It’s your own stupid actions that cause your misery. Try shutting up some time. The best thing for you to do is have others speak for you.

@Tony: You are the idiot. He said they should bomb UGA and just keep the football team. Athens-Clarke county is more than just the college. Take out the liberals and the Herald-Banner, it’s a nicer place to be. Apparently you aren’t getting the message of the article. Broun, the Herald-Banner, and even Marlow have made this election about Augusta vs. Athens. He was relaying that point to the people he was speaking to. Jim’s message has been lost in Athens and that is sad. He supports the “Brain Train”, expansion of the Medical school program in Athens, and bringing growth to the area. Have you read that anywhere in Athens? No. You have to go see him speak. You sheep really need a reality check and stop listening to the press. Go get it from the horse’s mouth.

Mrs. Whitehead - er, I mean Kepper,

You apparently didn’t get my comment. But what do you expect from the low intelligent crowd out there at Whitehead Tires. Whitehead started off by making this all about his particular section of the district. Listen to people like you and other Whitehead supporters talking about the election results. It’s all about Columbia County this and that. So seeing the minions talk about this means the talking points come from the master.

Kepper, if Whitehead’s message is lost in Athens don’t blame the paper. If he’s relying on a liberal paper’s coverage of him to win a GOP seat, he’s more ignorant than I first thought. Seeing the numbers of people voting AGAINST him in the ‘metro’ counties of Athens, I think his message is lost there because there is none. Bombing the flagship of the town is a stupid comment. People in this area still hold a loyalty to the school. I guess loyalty is something he clearly doesn’t have. Stupid comments, oh how numerous they are, are not the best way to win an area. If he wins, they are not the best way to win the faith of those in the area.

The low intelligent crowd? What the hell does that mean? Whitehead wasn’t the one who made this Athens vs. Augusta. It’s been thrown at him. All he’s doing is providing a wake-up call and a warning. That warning is the powers that be in Athens want the seat to be controlled there, not in Augusta and he’s right. Paul Broun Jr. is trying to use that to his advantage which is just sad. I never said Whitehead is relying on the liberal coverage in Athens. My argument is that there is no objective journalism there. Whitehead doesn’t need those idiots. He’s doing just fine either the way things are. If most people didn’t confuse Paul Broun Jr with his dad, he would not have gotten half the votes he received on 6/19. Be that as it may, lighten up some about the bombing comment. PSSST….(whispering): He was only joking……
