His calendar just opened up. Like magic.

After ducking two of the final broadcast debates in the run-up to Tuesday’s vote in the 10th District congressional race, Republican front-runner Jim Whitehead of Columbia County now says he’s in the mood to talk.

In his first post-election press release, the loose-tongued scamp has committed to three confrontations with his yet-to-be-named run-off opponent:

— One on Friday, June 29, from 5 to 6 p.m. WGAC 580AM in Augusta;

— A televised debate sponsored by the Atlanta Press Club and GPTV on July 9;

— And a third in Athens on WGAU 1340 AM, on a date to be determined.

Spineless…I guess the press aren’t as scary as debating your opponents.

What a juvenile attack on Whitehead. The last debate he “ducked” was so he could serve as mediator for a meeting between Gov. Sonny Perdue and Augusta officials - in his hometown - concerned about the loss of funding for the Medical College of Georgia. From our perspective, we’re glad in his hometown that he skipped another pointless whizzing match that was useful only for kooks trying to get traction by attacking the actual leader in the race - and for smarmy leftists in the media following their mislead.

Barry,

Bad news. Whitehead was a non-elected official acting in no official capacity. So exactly why could he not debate his peers on a wide broadcast? Don’t give me the crap about “still available on Comcast” because most people in this district don’t have access. The man flat out ran. He was afraid all of his peers would draw out the real Whitehead, the bumbling idiot. Now he’s in better control of a one on one situation and he thinks he’s less likely to screw up.

It’s grand that in Norwood’s district, Norwood’s chosen successor could not even win even the minimum of what was required. Even Athens Republicans dropped him. Maybe it’s a telling sign that either there was some resentment here at a hidden level or people just don’t think Whitehead is anywhere near the level of Norwood. If the annointed Norwood successor cannot even win Norwood’s district, there is an issue with the candidate. Or maybe those illegal Al Qaeda guys flocked to Athens to vote for Broun?

@Tony, What the heck are you smoking? Jim Whithead was elected to the Columbia County Commision as well as to the State Senate for the GA 24th? He is an elected official, and a well-respected on at that. You should get your facts straight before you call someone a bumbline idiot. If you knew the whole story behind the Athens Herald-Banners left-leaning disdain for Whitehead, then you would understand why he wouldn’t want to participate in any debate held by those clowns. They continually take his comments out of context. They refuse to use all of his comments from a given interview. They have the luxury of piece-mealing a story from “selected” quotes and generate garbage that people buy into because they just don’t know any better.
Before you ponder why Whitehead won’t debate in Athens, talk to someone from Whitehead’s staff. Ask them about the class act that Jim Thompson (of the Athens Herald-Banner) portrayed when he called Whitehead’s campaign headquarters, cussing and berating staffers. All because Whitehead would not show up for the debate.
No, thank you. The GA 10th will do fine without any input from Athens, or the idiots of this blog.

Is it not news worthy to note that the Democratic candidates received less than 25% of the votes in the 10th district’s special election?

Democrats didn’t come close to winning this election.

So much for the theories voters are abandoning the GOP over the war in Iraq and other issues such as the President’s domestic policies.

Voters in the tenth will send a very qualified Jim Whitehead to Washington.

Kepper,

Probably the same stuff you’re smoking my friend. An elected official does not make one smart or somehow immune from making outright stupid comments. But why am I surprised you’d like someone like Whitehead? Did I even say anything about the ABH? They are not the Press Club so what’s your excuse for that? And you’re telling me that just because they have a bias against him, he won’t confront them? I hate to tell you this Kepper but Congress is held by the Dems. They’re biased. Is Whitehead going to avoid Congress now? Will he run and hide from them? If he cannot handle the little ol’ local press how can he handle the Dems? What a coward.

As for taking out of context, what was out of context about blowing up a college and his alma mater? Or illegal Al Qaeda terrorists being registered by libs? Or Iraq not being the important issue in this district?

So before you only pick one little item and defend your man, why not look at his history during this campaign? And please get Whitehead to put on paper your comment about input from Athens. We know that is truly the feeling of the camapign. When Norwood represented the district, he took Athens and represented everything. You’ve just admitted Whitehead cares less about Athens. Pretty sad for someone to use old memories from Athens in his campaign but won’t even give the city the time of day. So he runs from Athens and the media because they hurt his precious ego. Whaaaa! He’ll do WONDERFUL in a Democratically controlled Congress.

I thinks all of you are smoking something because Whitehead resigned his senate seat in April.

p.s. United States election laws do not allow you to hold more than one position at a time. (slight exception with U.S. Senate.)

prediction: Whitehead loses by less than 1.5% if Broun gets the run-off spot. Whitehead wins in landslide otherwise.

Hey Moe um news flash…the heir apparent to the throne missed out on victory as well. Somehow I’m a little perplexed how Norwood’s annointed candidate can’t even win in Norwood’s district. Strange thought but shouldn’t Norwood’s staff and wife jumping on board the Whitehead train be a clear sign to all that his district needs to overwhelmingly support Whitehead? Um, meethinks either people were not listening to that or they saw Whitehead for who he truly was…some empty suit a little group holding on to hopes they could keep their job and all the perks that go with it.

Oh and my favorite? The strategy they’re going after Broun…Jason Pye has it right. Whitehead sounds more like the Dem in this race. He’s defending the status quo and big government and attacking the guy who is actually sticking to smaller government.
