House Appropriations is a mighty fine place to stay
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Responding to some buzz back in his Southwest Georgia district, U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop has taken himself out of a statewide race next year with this release:
“It has come to my attention that rumors are circulating that I am considering a run for the U.S. Senate in 2008 against Saxby Chambliss (R-GA). This suggestion is absolutely false.
“While I am pleased that my work on behalf of my constituents as an advocate for their needs, values, and concerns has resulted in positive reaction and comment, I believe firmly that as a Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I am now in an even better position to serve the people of the Second Congressional District of Georgia and our nation.
“It is therefore my intention to continue my service as U.S. Representative for the Second District of Georgia, as long as God gives me strength and the people of the Second District deem me worthy of their trust.”

I was excited when I heard the rumor Sanford Bishop may run against Saxby Chambliss. I voted for Chambliss in the past, but will not vote for him again. His voting record has been a huge disappointment, especially on illegal immigration and education.

When Governor Perdue signs SB 15; emphasizing the jailers duty to verify nationality; then Governor Perdue is well on his way to becoming Senator Sonny Perdue (R-GA).
Run, Sonny, run!

Casey, you are a moron. Perdue can’t run because he is our Governor, and he would need to finish his term first. But, in Casey’s little dreamworld if he did run, he wouldn’t win. Look at what he has done for Georgia. Squat. Snap out of it buddy, Georgia is going back blue!

Amazingly, I keep hearing rumors Sonny may be tapped for a U.S. Vice President slot. I don’t think he’d consider a Senate run at this point.

Governor Perdue can indeed run for U.S. Senate in 2008. There is no legal impediment should he so desire. There are many recent examples of Governor’s going on to be U.S. Senators.
There are many good reasons, the least of which is Governor Perdue would only have two years remaining as Governor and the U.S. Senate term is for six years.
More importantly, a U.S. Senate seat provides Sonny Perdue with an excellent opportunity to gain Washington, D.C. “experience” plus foreign affairs experience; thus, positioning himself well for a national ticket spot in 2012 or 2016.
Sonny is that young.
Run, Sonny, run!

Perdue’s an idiot! He can’t even run for pizza!
Today is supposed to be his big day as Governor - the 40th day to sign or veto bills! Someone with a little intelligence would have controlled the news day and controlled the news cycle and done a live cut-in at 12 Noon and another live cut-in at 5:00PM. What is Perdue doing downstairs. Sitting on his fat backside!
He should be publicly signing SB 200 promoting responsible growth in Georgia; publicly signing SB 15 vowing to rid our highways of illegal aliens; publicly signing HB 214, preserving Jekyll Island and the environment; publicly signing HB 772 and HB 773, the Speaker’s two pieces of local legislation for Paulding County. Instead, he’s play cutsie games downstairs sitting on his fat backside!
If Perdue was serious about anything, he would have signed the big budget by now instead of keeping 180 school systems in utter suspense and wreaking havoc in their ability to hire and fund programs for the upcoming school year.
Why is Governor Perdue playing this cutsie little game of waiting to the last possible minute of the 40th day?
What the hell has and his little minions been doing for 40 days?
He’s an idiot!

Sonny isn’t the Washington type. He appears to be dedicated family man who likes to be home. Being a Senator means traveling back and forth between DC and being away from family. That job ain’t his cup of tea.
I’m hoping one of the Reps or Senators in the General Assembly will try.

State Representative Tim Bearden (R-Villa Rica) would be an excellent candidate for U.S. Senate!
Another excellent choice would be U.S. Rep. Lynn Westmoreland!

You goobers show an incredible lack of knowledge about government and elections. It is absolutely scary that you people are voting on our elected officials.
And JOe, no, Westmoreland would be a horrible US Senator, just like he has been a total loss as a Congressman. He’s the one who proposed a $500 limit on fines to employers of illegal aliens.

I’m afraid that the Reps will stand behind Zaxby (mis-spelling intentional) and then Dems put up a “Zell Miller” type conservative candidate. If that happens, Zaxby is gone. Good riddance to the Globalist.

Bishop would have been the ideal candidate to go against Chambliss. He would have made south Ga very competitive & would have attracted independents & moderate republicans. Everyone keeps talking about perdue as a senator. There’s no way in hell I would vote for a man who doesn’t know how to run a state & who do not like to work hard. He would’nt last in D.C.

To “casey is dumb” - While I’m on your side politically (hoping for a blue Georgia)I think you have your facts wrong. Governor Purdue, who is in his second term as Governor not his first, could run for Senate if he wanted to. Hopefully, he’ll serve out his current term as Governor and then go into retirement. And a Democrat can retake the Senate seat for Georgia and get some real work done.
