To Saxby, Iraq progress “truly amazing.” To another Republican eyewitness — well, not so much.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Democrats, via Daily Kos, are marveling at U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ view of the Iraq war, expressed on Tuesday in a telephone conference talk with reporters, following a just-completed jaunt to the Middle East.
“Every time I go over there the improvements in the conditions are truly amazing,” said the Republican senator.
Kos notes that U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, a moderate Republican from Maine, was on the same trip. “The good news is mixed; the bad news is downright troubling,” Snowe said.
Both are members of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Other than geography — Maine isn’t known for its large military population — part of the difference in eyesight may be the fact that Snowe isn’t up for re-election in ’08.
She’s joined with U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh, a Democrat from Indiana, in a bipartisan attempt to create a series of benchmarks for progress in Iraq.

Has Saxby ever, EVER, expressed an opinion or voted in a way that was not laid out for him by his handlers at the White House?

Chambliss is an embarrassment. It’s more embarrassing, however, that the only person running against him is Vernon Jones.

It is pathetic that GA Democrats can’t come up with a better challenge to Chambliss. There really isn’t much of a Democratic party left in GA.

A chicken hawk like Chambliss will never lose his enthusiasm for war as long as other people are doing the fighting and dying.

Has puppydog Saxby ever come out of master W’s shadow? I mean how much can you pretend to see things that don’t exist just to return the favor for handing him this seat? Saxby, try representing your state rather than master W. Loyalty is great and all but when your this blatant, people see right through it. Better watch it or the Ladies’ Man might send you to the unemployment line.

Saxby is saying the things I am hearing from Troops that are coming back. There has been great progress made.I have talked to soliders that were over in Iraq when we first went in and just this passed week that are saying the same thing that Saxby is saying. The only thing they wished would happen is that American supported them. To understand that they want to stay and get the job done! Do we want to become a Paper tiger and give the Terrioist another victory!

Oh, Saxby, the “Support of Our Troops” handle is really cleaver. It doesn’t seem to me that your talking to the same troops I am. I would love to post the last e-mail I received from my brother, but will not for privacy sake. But, it is safe to say that not one soldier in Iraq stands around with their head down, worried that American civilians do not “support” them. They want to do their job and get home. If you really want to suppport the troops, then join the military and take my brothers place. He would love to get home and see a Braves game. The place IS a mess and just because Sax got the Green zone tour (They sent him before Chaney to see if he could get in/out OK) doesn’t mean that anything is better. Remember, the side with the helicopters always losses.

Hey “Supporter” (is that the athletic kind?):
Who’s “the Terrioist”? That’s a new one. If you want to go to war with somebody don’t you think you should be able to give a clearly recognizable name for the enemy?

Jim - Apparently you have no valid criticism for the content of Supporter’s argument, so you chose instead to lambaste him for a typo. That’s pretty childish.
Supporter - It would be nice to believe that rebuilding Iraq is W’s biggest mission for the troops at this point. I certainly support them in that, and I’m sure most other Americans do as well. If that is, in fact, what they are spending the majority of their time doing these days, then the media had better start doing a better job of reporting that.
