Georgia pair carries the word about Romney to evangelicals
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In today’s edition of the Los Angeles Times is an article that details GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s growing reliance on two members of Georgia’s religious conservative community.
Says the article: “In the next few weeks, the campaign will take a more direct approach, sending two of its evangelical supporters for meetings with pastors and others in key primary states.”
Mark DeMoss, a public relations executive from Gwinnett County whose clients include Franklin Graham, has volunteered to stand up for Romney, a Mormon, in South Carolina and Alabama.
Jay Sekulow, a Washington insider and chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, an Christian advocacy group based in Alpharetta, is heading to Iowa and Florida. The Sekulow family were big supporters of Ralph Reed’s candidacy in the ‘06 primary race for lieutenant governor.
Polls have made clear Romney has a problem with Christian conservatives who view the Church of Latter Day Saints as something cultish. In the Times piece, DeMoss takes an optimistic view:
“I’m not going to suggest that evangelicals are running to the microphone endorsing Mitt Romney,” DeMoss said, “but neither are they running to microphones rejecting him, which I think is pretty positive.”

We’re not electing a Pastor, we are electing a President for this nation and Mitt Romney has all of the qualities one could want in such a role. His faith in God is strong and his vision for running our country is conservative and right on target. I would hope we could support a candidate with these qualities instead of bickering over where they go to worship.

Mormon bashing is getting old. While Christian conservatives are bickering, liberals are on the move and eroding the moral fabric of this country. Any one who want to profess the name of Christ should be counted as an ally.
Let’s stop arguing, work together and take this country back!

Sorry, I don’t want a man with 5 wives and 27 children running this country.
He practices polygamy and I believe that is against the law.

Fred Thompson is the only one that can hold the Whitehouse for the GOP.

Wow Joseph Have you read a book in the past couple of centuries? He has never practiced polygamy. He has 1 wife, and Mormon’s denounced polygamy over 100 years ago. Idiot…welcome to the 21st Century…

Mitt Romney is a conservative, God-fearing, husband and father with an incredible base of experience in private industry and politics. His years of devotion to public service and to his wife of nearly 40 years are what we should hope for in more leaders of a free nation.

I would love to see a non-christian become president, and not run this country on HIS religious beliefs.
I’d be happy with one as Governor of Georgia.

Mitt is a conservative? Can you back that up with proof besides his newfound values?

I have one main concern about electing Mitt or any Mormon to the presidency. Will it make it easier for people to convert to Mormonism? (Put another way, will it make the ground more fertile for Morman missionaries around the world?) As an evangelical, the answer to that question has to matter to me.

Mitt Romney supports restructuring the tax code, stopping illegal immigration, cutting taxes and spending, seeks a market driven health insurance plan for all Americans and wants to increased investment in education and technology…that’s just off the top of my head. Christianity and Mormonism are not in competition with one another.

Supports? That is really weak. Come on you can do better than that. Hillary can sound southern at a moment’s notice. So some guy sounds good and says all the right things and you’re banking your reputation on the guy? Wow. Amazing how this guy flips more than a Waffle House cook and he’s treated as if he’s Reagan incarnate. Funny how he claimed to want nothing to do with Reagan even when he ran for Senate.
Not in competition with each other? What makes you think that?

Sounds like Tony thinks he has it all figured out. Who needs a President when Tony wants a Dictator. Good luck with your political interests. Mitt Romney has all the qualities of a strong leader, has the resume to back it up and the persona to pull it off. I’m proud to support him.

That’s great. I tell you nothing of what I want but yet you somehow think I want a dictator? I expect more out of someone who claims to be a conservative SC. All I’ve done is pointed out what a flake Romney is and somehow I want a dictator. Wow, the intellect that’s backing Romney these days.
Actually SC I’d just like someone who is honest in their views, has a soldi agenda, and the credentials to back it up. I’m tired of fluff. I’m tired of cute little buzz phrases of the flavor of the week. I want someone who has a history of being strong on his views and not wavering at the first opportunity for higher office. I want someone who tried to once be farther to the left than liberal Teddy Kennedy. Mitt was a Republican then and a Mormon as well. The only difference between then and now is that then he had to look liberal to beat Teddy now he has to look conservative to beat McCain, Giuliani, Thompson, and others. I prefer spines in my candidates and not someone who sells his soul for higher office.

Mitt Romney supports restructuring the tax code, stopping illegal immigration, cutting taxes and spending, seeks a market driven health insurance plan for all Americans and wants to increased investment in education and technology. He can’t do it alone - you seem to suggest that for you to support a candidate they must get-r done with an iron fist, thus the dictator comment. You have to have an entry point and a strong vision - Romney’s career backs up his views and, with his ability to work with Republicans and Democrats, I think he is worthy of the opportunity to back it up. Have a good day.

We need a candidate who can beat Hillary, Mitt may be the best choice.

I suggest an iron fist? No. Tell me where I suggest that. I suggest a spine and some principles that last longer than a primary election cycle. His career backs up his views? Then he is a Rockefeller Republican. Thank you for clarifying for me.
How does Mitt seem to be the best choice? Even Edwards polls better than Willard. If you’re basing this on the “best chance to beat Hillary” then settle for Giuliani or McCain. At least you know what you get with those two. Willard’s liable to put on a dress to win over Hillary supporters.

I worked for Mitt. The man is impressive to no end. we are lucky to have such a leader running for the Presidency. Will he win? I have no idea and neither does anyone. But he can. He has pleny of campaign cash and a lead in the NH primary polls.
Pol. Active Christian I am stunned that you would vote against Mitt in order to prevent the progress of the LDS church. That’s your basis for your vote? Would you not vote for a Jew for the same reason? And if LDs beliefs are inferior as you seem to believe then won’t an LDS president make that more apparent not less?

I’ve seen one poll with him on top in NH. And cash doesn’t buy the White House.
When did you work for Mitt? And where?

Mormon bashing is old. Funny how the libs are playing the ‘religion’ card to such apparantly great success.
Wake up people - you’re being manipulated by the left… Once enough of you wake up to that fact, the left will scream as the conservatives UNITE!
Isn’t Mitt the only top contender (McCain, Guilani, Romney) that has been married to only one wife??
By Tony
May 7, 2007 10:22 PM | Link to this
So does being married more than once make you less a person? I guess flipping on your deepest held beliefs and ones you’ve sworn up and down to protect makes Willard better? Manipulated by the left? Sounds like that is what you’ve been…manipulated by Willard. And using UNITE! Sounds like you’ve been trained by Jesse Jackson and leftist unions. That is the only time I have seen that word used in such a manner. Seems Mitt’s Northeastern liberal influences are seeping into the campaign. Married to one wife but husband to both the left and the right. Multiple Choice Mitt.

So, if someone who is a jew, buddhist or islam runs to become a US president, no christian should vote for him/her automatically? What kind of country is this? I am a immigrant and I am a christian. Before I came to US, I voted for a buddhist, catholic, atheist president for my previous country. Lighten up, guys! Vote for the person who will lead the country best, not to appease your religious appetite.

Tony,
Sorry, Rudy already tried the “putting on a Dress” thing. I doubt Mitt will make that mistake too.
By Tony

Mike,
Mitt’s already made that mistake. Supporting gay scoutmasters and Boy Scouts to now being against gay rights…being more pro-choice than Teddy Kennedy to being more pro-life than the rest of the GOP candidates, etc. etc. Willard might as well put the dress on. He’s done the opposite on everything else.

Whereas Mitt Romney believes sexual orientation should not preclude joining the Boy Scouts, he supports the right of local Councils of the Boy Scouts of America to decide and enforce their policy regarding homosexuals in their organization and leadership. Romney served on the Boy Scouts of America’s National Executive Board from 1993 to 2002.

I am voting for someone who can lead this country with good conservative Christian values. I want a leader that loves God and his fellow citizens. I don’t want a dude like Gulliani who wears a dress in the evenings or Hillary who’s liberal plans and cheating-husband are an embarasment to our nation. The more I research Romney the more I like him. He reminds me of Regan. I am on the bandwagon and have already been telling my liberal friends to vote for him :)
Mitt Romney has my vote! Let’s not let the left tell us to shot down a conservative Christian. This is exactly what they want. Let’s vote for someone with moral character that will defend our rights.

I agree that many people are being “worked” by the liberal media. For example, the media was all over Romney’s Great Great Great Grandfather’s polygamist past until a blogger mentioned that Obama’s grandfather was a polygamist. Opps, can’t talk about polygamy anymore, we might hurt the liberals. Since then you’ve hardly heard the media mention it. They know just which of the conservative christian’s button’s to press. Romney is really a great guy. Some of that came through on Jay Leno. You Romney bashers ought to watch that on YouTube. Just do a YouTube search using “Romney Leno”. How many know what Romney did when one of his co-worker’s daughter went missing? He closed down Bain Capital and sent the staff to New York to find her. It cost the firm big bucks and they found her and brought her hom. This guy is not a flake, he’s the real deal. I can also find some faults with him but not anywhere near enough not to vote for him. How many of you consevative know that Fred Thompson support abortion? Check Drudge report today.

To any so-called Christian who bashes Romney on the basis of his Mormonism, or Mormonism in general: Get a life already. Grow up and get real. And learn the facts from someone who isn’t biased
True Christianity isn’t about accusing others of being cultists, or denying that they believe in Christ. It’s about believing in Christ, doing good works, forgiveness, building faith in others, taking care of the fatherless and the widow. (James ch. 2)
How many of you knew that the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter Day Saints (the proper name) contributes more to the Red Cross than any single other donor on the planet? Not just per capita, but IN TOTAL. I thought so. That’s just one example of the many fine things Latter Day Saints do for the good of people in our country and around the world, without seeking regognition or glory. Their clergy is strictly voluntary, and unpaid. At Katrina, local leaders were first on the scene with food and supplies, for members but mostly non-members. The list goes on.
Now, if you profess to be such a real Christian, go out and do something useful, like build others, rather than hatefully tearing them down. I know you can do it. (by their fruits ye shall know them) If you already do, bless you. If you need to improve, (and we all know who we are) let us follow the example of our common Master, the Good Shepherd.
Oh, and elect a candidate with the same values. The attitude of our political leaders can have a positive effect on how we all treat each other. Not through mandatory socialist policies that the left would support, but through voluntary efforts in our homes and communities. This is how America once was, and can still be, one nation under God.
