Perdue raises possibility of special session — but is it a threat or a last-minute cattle prod?

The Associated Press says Gov. Sonny Perdue is signaling that he might veto the 2007 midyear budget, raising the possibility that a long and tortuous session of the Legislature might have an encore.

“Every day the papers are filled with story after story about the shortcomings of this budget,” the AP quotes Perdue spokesman Dan McLagan as saying.

“This governor is unlikely to sign a budget that fails to meet the needs of Georgians,” McLagan said. “This certainly appears to be such a budget.”

The article noted that the timing of the comments seemed designed to give lawmakers an opportunity to fix the problems before they leave. Friday is scheduled to be the final day of the 40-day session.

Is this a joke? It can’t be April Fools day again?

HB 94 passed both chambers of the General Assembly unanimously. HB 94 promised us taxpayers a $100 check. We want our $100 tax refunds. We don’t want a credit - we want our $100.

I can think of nothing more bizzare than a veto of HB 94 with the sole exception of the General Assembly failing to override a veto of HB 94.

This is not funny anymore and no one is laughing!

If Perdue won’t “sign a budget that isn’t good for ALL Georgians…” I wonder if he’ll ever begin paying law enforcement wages that can sustain life? Go fish!

HB 94 did away with $35,000 for the Big Pig Jig in Dooly County…..

Is Dan McLagan saying the Big Pig meets the needs of all Georgians? Maybe the $18,000 for weightlifting equipment…nope, guess it had to be the $100,000 for the municipal golf course in Warm Springs…perhaps those $70,000 Roman Arches in Floyd County!

Naaahh….on second thought, working Georgians like me need the $100 check the General Assembly promised me last week!

Governor, what all of Georgia needs is a steady diet of less and less legislative pork!

Why is it that people and organizations come up with ideas on how to spend the people’s money. I believe the legislature should put down in writing what is necessary and start dealing with pork. Local governments need not apply for stuff that is not necessary. If they want something, fund it themselves. Isn’t the main function of government is to protect the citizens? I guess some of the legislators want to see their name in the newspaper and say, “I did this for you.” Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

EastPointGOP - no e-mail; I hope you’re working. Since we are on the same team, let me clarify:

I’m afraid you’re not focusing on the wider more important questions:

  • Why would any GOP General Assembly appropriate any pork in any budget since we railed against prior General Assemblys for the same thing?
  • Why would any GOP Governor threaten to veto any tax refund?
  • Why would any GOP General Assembly even give two seconds of thought to upholding a veto of a tax refund?
  • If your focus is to remain narrow, then ask yourself this:

  • Aren’t you concerned that $35,000 was wasted on the Big Pig Jig Site. I drove down there two weeks ago and I can’t see where one penny was ever spent for improvements. The Big Pig building itself is faded and needs painting.
  • Aren’t you concerned that $100,000 was given to a municipal golf course that is undercutting the privately owned competition?
  • Don’t you think the General Assembly needs to be more transparent in how it conducts the people’s business and wouldn’t it perform a greater public service by fully disclosing what’s in the budget and when it was actually spent?

You’re missing the point. I have a pet peeve against people who can’t get their facts right.

PS another fact check they never said it was going to be a “Check”. It was stated that it would be in the form of a check or credit on your tax bill, Bill.
