It’s April 20 or bust.

House Speaker Glenn Richardson threw down a gauntlet of his own on Tuesday, declaring that Day 40, the final day of the session, would be April 20. That’s Friday week.

A statement like that is intended to pressure the other side — i.e., the Senate. And that means the two chambers probably still have some distance to close before they reach agreement even on the first — and smallest — of two budget bills.

“Time is starting to run very, very, very short,” Richardson warned. “I believe next Friday is it. I see no reason to continue to perpetuate this session.

We’re told that Gov. Sonny Perdue has informed both sides that, should they gavel down without the proper budget agreements, he’ll call a special session for the next Saturday, requiring the attendance of all 236 lawmakers.

I’m embarrassed Republicans can’t manage a legislative session better than this — today is the 34th legislative day, yet it has been 92 calendar days since Legislative Day #1 - please don’t tell me those 92 calendar days were wasted putting all that pork and pig waste in HB 94.

Mr. Speaker - if the House majority (Republicans) would honor their long-held pledge to be fiscal conservatives and watch-dogs of the public purse, then this 40 day marathon could easily be over by Wednesday - April 18th!

Cut the pork - cut the waste and get on with the public’s business!

PS. Please explain why the House (in HB 94) had to add on another $494,000+ in per diem expenses for House Members - was that to cover legislator’s personal expenses during these many delaying recess days?
