Very useful topic to take up here in 2007! It should do wonders for present-day issues like black on black crime, children out of wedlock, and a lingering apathy in some sects of the black community. I left work early for lunch and drove down Boulevard Monday morning at 11:00am and asked several folks what they thought of the apology. They said it was long overdue and added that Coretta needed a portrait in the Capitol. Some even said that Hartsfield-Jackson needed to be changed to King-Jackson International Airport. I got to thinking, why are there so many people hanging out here on a Monday at this time?

What good would it do for people who have never owned slave to apologize to people who have never been slaves? This makes sense…to whom? I think both sides of the issue have much bigger fish to fry than this, this is a token lame gesture of pandering to a small group of people who want publicity.

SW, don’t forget the money. This is a lead in to reparations. They want to get paid so they don’t have to go out and get a real job.

Didn’t intend to open the door to some extreme points of view here, but I do think it is a useless venture to seek apologies today from Governors or Legislatures for slavery. My hope is that before I die, black civic/community leaders will spend all their time inspiring the community to excel and move forward, rather than waste time on divisive, unproductive issues like these apologies, etc. Maybe it will take Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharpton’s of the country who have made too good a living off of race-baiting-years after the civil rights movement-to pass on into history. I just hope they haven’t inspired new generations of “Reverends” to take their place.

England removed themselves from the slave trade long before the United States, and those living in England now have never owned any slaves, yet last week they had a national day where they apologized for their nation’s role in the slave trade. There is nothing wrong with recognizing that the U.S. played a negative role in slavery. I do, however, agree that an apology would in no way improve the psychological, socio-economic conditions of blacks in America. I would prefer to see preventative remedies to the lingering effects of slavery.
As for “They want to get paid so they don’t have to go out and get a real job.”, who doesn’t want to eventually get paid enough to not work anymore? Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Sam Walton, and other truly wealthy people do not teach their children to “get a real job”. Instead, they teach them to manage the family business and increase the family wealth by employing all those people who want “a real job”. There are people running our corporations who have never worked a day in their lives; should they also go out and “get a real job”?

I think the state should apologize to African-Americans, Native Americans and women of all races for its participation in legal, moral and cultural inequality and brutality. I also think the church (all denominations) should apologize for the injustice it has done to people, and women, in particular, over the centuries.

I want to say to all of you obviously racist “kkk—as” on this board, and yes that’s what I said, because obviously from your posts that’s what you are. Listen and listen CLEARLY..I NOR ANY OF THE EDUCATED, STRIVING, HARD WORKING BLACK PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY NEITHER WANT NOR NEED ANY APOLOGY FROM YOU.!!
It is bad enough that you in your IGNORANCE constantly broad brush all Black people with your silly little stereotypes. Why in the hell would I want to give you yet something else to be bitter about and throw in my face? Take your apology and shove it up your fat @sses! You have been from the beginning in denial about the building of this country and how you stole it in the first place. Yes, we and everybody else got the short end of the stick, but slowly (and surely) we are claiming our share. While you sit and remain focused and therefore blinded by the small minority who are overhyped by images in the media, the rest maneuver around you as productive contributing members to society.
I love it.

Dearest Sean,
I don’t have any of the issues you mentioned in your opening post. Thousands of us do not. Why didn’t you ask me what I think of the apology?

I believe an apology is in order. Blacks would not be the dregs of society today had they had an even playing field to start with.
I would support reparations so long as only whites whose families directly owned slaves are required to pay the full tab. I believe $500,000.00 per black man, woman and child would be a good starting point. Should that not rectify the situation then we could revisit the issue for further necessary payments until blacks are equal with whites financially in this country.

When is the United States going to apologize to the state of Georgia for what it did to the state’s people at then end of the War of Northern Agression and during reconstruction? William T. Sherman should’ve been tried and hanged for the war crimes he committed against the citizens of Georgia. Men, women, and children were brutally murdered, raped, beaten, shipped off and never heard from again. Union soldiers destroyed and stole personal property from citizens. When do the people of Georgia get our reparations for what was done to our ancestors?

Sorry and then what? If they were sorry it would be an issue for them to do so. Sorry does nothing for me, they can keep it, just give me the profits this country made off the backs of the people they enslaved.
