More Blogwatch: Edwards headed to Macon

Bloggers are having a field day. Amy Morton of Georgia Women Vote says Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards will be in Macon on April 14.

This is as good a time as any to say we’ve heard some quiet worries expressed about the impact of Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer on the cash-starved Democratic party in Georgia.

John Edwards is the key-noter for the party’s major annual fund-raiser, the Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner, now scheduled for mid-May. Elizabeth Edwards is scheduled to speak at a luncheon that same day.

I just want to ask this one question:

Edwards’ wife is going to die. Her cancer is incurable. In other words, they are just going to make her as comfortable as possible.

Uh, why is he trying to run for President? If my wife was suffering from an incurable disease, we would be travelling to faraway lands and working in villages saving people. The last thing I would want to do is run for President!

I just don’t understand it. It’s all kinda creepy.

Her cancer isn’t curable, but it’s treatable. She’s not on her death bed.

If Hillary Clinton were elected President, and Bill developed cancer that was treatable but not cureable, would you expect her to resign? None of us can anticipate what life will bring our way. What is important is the ability to deal with adversity and stay focused on the needs of the nation. John and Elizabeth have invited the nation to observe them and make our own decision about their ability to do just that.

While Jack Kennedy was President, he suffered from horrible pain that required medication, and FDR governed from a wheelchair. Adversity is not a disqualifier for the office but instead preparation for the tough choices a President must make. Hot house flowers do not do well in that office-look at George Bush. Plus, in this instance, I am convinced that John Edwards is continuing not only with Elizabeth’s full support, but at her urging.

Cancer and politics make for a weird combo of circumstances I agree.

Well Mo, it may be creepy to you, but it is their decision. The Edwards have always keep fighting when responding to tragedy. He ran for Senate after his 16 year old son Wade died in 1996. I am not supporting Edwards this time, but I do have a great bit of respect for him and his wife. It is a family decision that they have made to offer themselves up for public service, which deserves to be admired. By the way, research shows that those who are optimistic about treatments have a better success rate with treatment. So why shouldn’t he run? John Edwards is a great example of the American dream and if he thinks that he has something to offer to the American people (he does just look at his health care plan) then let him run and leave him alone. If you don’t support him that is fine, but to question his dedication to his family is a bit below the belt in my mind.
