How real life sometimes creeps into the state Capitol

At 9 a.m. this morning, an employee walked into a northwest Atlanta furniture story company and shot a co-worker dead.

Not the headline you want to see on the day the Senate is to engage in a volatile debate over S.B.43, the bill to permit employees to keep guns in cars parked on company property.

The bill’s at the bottom of today’s calendar, so expect a late decision. Read the news story here.

If SB43 had been law, this woman could have magically dodged the bullets from her coworker’s gun and ran out to her car to get a gun to defend herself.

Whatever the arguments for and against this bill, a gun in the car does nothing to help a person who is being shot inside a building hundreds of feet away from their car. The only way it might help would be to allow other coworkers to go out and get their guns so they can shoot the fleeing gunman but it still wouldn’t save the victim.

I’m sure there are scenarios that can be thought up in which employees with guns in their cars could save someone’s life, but today’s shooting is not one of them.

I mean… if a Senator’s AIDES can enter senate office buildings in DC with loaded handguns and TWO EXTRA CLIPS, I see absolutely nothing wrong with the average law abiding citizen going to work with one.

This makes the Cynthia McKinney incident look like CHILDS PLAY. You don’t just FORGET these things you know. I’ll bet it happens ALL THE TIME, this is just the time someone got caught.

Had SB 43 been law, the employee who shot the co-worker and the co-worker who was shot could both blame the boss for not preventing what he knew could have been a crime.

If two employees don’t get a long, is an employer supposed to take precautions to ensure that a crime doesn’t occur with the gun one of them may or may not have in their car?
