Obama makes an Atlanta date
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
At the end of last night’s post about Gov. Bill Richardson’s visit, we mentioned the ATL might be seeing more Democratic presidential candidates by the end of the month. Since then the cat has jumped out of the bag and into our email box.
Illinois Sen. Barack Obama has scheduled a March 26 fundraiser at a location still to be announced. Tickets for a 5:30 p.m. VIP reception will be $2,300, with a $500-a-ticket kickoff reception to follow.
We’ve also heard, but haven’t confirmed, that New York Sen. Hillary Clinton will be here March 19.
It would be interesting to know, by the way, where Atlanta ranks both in terms of the number of fundraisers by ’08 hopefuls and the money raised here. We think it would be pretty high on both lists.

At $500 a plate, Obama ain’t coming to see the poor folks or the working folks. This leaves the fat cats and it’s safe to say the fat cats ain’t forking over the big bucks without getting some commitments from Obama and I’m sure those commitments have little or nothing to do with poor folks or working folks. I think the Senator from Illinois would do much better to host a box-dinner fundraiser in Piedmont Park! Ah, how the newly minted innocent are quickly corrupted by the need for mountains of cash to run for President!

Leon - how right you are! I’ll bet Gov. Richardson and Sen. Clinton are seeing the same big shots with the fat wallets. Oh, they might stop the limosine afterwards for a photo-op at the Hosea Feed the Hungry Foundation but their hearts and minds remain committed to those with big bank accounts!

Senator Obama will more than likely have a free rally in Atlanta, too. That has been the practice of his campaign in most of the cities he’s visited - he’ll have a free rally open to the public during the day and at night he’ll have a fundraising dinner. I don’t see what the problem is, you can’t become the nominee without raising huge amounts of money - he didn’t enter the race to lose!

If the likes of Leon and Sandra would demand clean elections (publicly-funded elections), then our politicians wouldn’t have to sell their souls to win. Unfortunately, while they complain about the hypocrisy of Democrats seeking to raise money from large donors, they condone a system that requires it and are thrilled to see Republicans succeed at it.

Thank you Colin for helping Sandra and Leon understand what running for office, especially on that magnitude means. We can all demand and get commitments from the presidential candidates if we would just channel our energy into being pro-active and not a part of the same complaining and letting others decide our fate. You vote (with or without money) you get to have your list of commitments addressed. If they don’t provide the answeres you want, don’t vote for that person!

Sandra & Leon, Also keep in mind; this campaign will cost each Party close to 500 million for their final candidate. This is not the type of money that can be raised by a couple of dollars here & there. 500 Plate is standard in this type of situation; you will see this from more than just Obama. Try a search on election fundraisers and go from there, this may both surprise & enlighten you.
