Perhaps a new name in the ‘08 race for U.S. Senate

Over the weekend, a group of Atlanta fans of the DailyKos put up a notice that they would be forming a local chapter, with the mission of chasing after U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the Georgia Republican.

That’s not news.

The juicy item was the survey included in the solicitation, naming seven potential Democrats who might make decent candidates in the ‘08 Senate race.

Most of the names you’ve heard before: Attorney General Thurbert Baker, Columbus attorney Jim Butler, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall of Macon, Atlanta attorney Jim Martin; and state Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond.

Maybe we’ve been under a rock, but the seventh name was new to us: Charles Brewer, the “former Mindspring.com founder and CEO, now an eco-friendly Atlanta real estate developer.”

One big name being heard around our state is Carrollton Mayor Wayne Garner. Strong willed conservative with tough law and order credentials.

The Carrollton Mayor running for Senate? Looks like the Democrats have run out of first and second string players and are now reaching for the third string.

cnote- i take it you don’t know much about garner. anyone that knows him, including the other 7 people on that list, will tell you that how formidable he can be on the trail.

What about “conservative Democrat” Vernon Jones? Please take him to DC and away from DeKalb. Charles Brewer is too smart, too grounded, too innovative, to be a US Senator. Don’t get my hopes up by mentioning Brewer…

I think Jim Butler would make the best overall candidate, besides Marshall running (don’t think the risk of losing Marshalls congressional seat is worth it). He could if he chose be a self-funded candidate, at least till he got some buzz and could keep up. Saxby is going to raise lots of money andbe really tough to defeat. What I would not do is listen to anyone who Kos says to nominate, since he dislikes every Democrat who believes in God.

If Georgia ever had a class act in the congress, it’s Sen Chambliss. None of the names mentioned could even carry his bags. I could really get excited about keeping him in office. Baker should be thinking about running for Governor and the little labor comm is lucky to be anywhere. He’s turned the labor dept into a welfare agency.

How is he a class act? Please enlighten us.

Yes… please enlighetn. Chambliss is a “W” follower who can’t seem to think for himself.

By say what?

Yes, that Chambliss campaign ad that compared a veteran who lost three limbs to Bin Laden was a real class act. And his judgment in supporting Bush at every turn has been pretty classy too. Just an all-round classy guy.

You would not know a class act if one sat next to you. A class act is one who doesn’t support same sex marriages nor abortion on demand. One who holds on to the very strengths which made America strong. Hopefully you can and will change. It’s later than you think, or do you think at all?

Sorry Joe… you are on the losing end of both of those issues. The country is moving away from these divisive wedge issues. They may work in the south for another generation but the Republican party is becoming a regional southern party… face the facts buddy. I hope you like being in the minority because that is where the Republicans will be at the national level for the foreseeable future.

Maybe he should get an idea about what is going on over in Iraq and what was wrong with the strategy before he starts running for re-election. He is possibly the worst Senator in the country and needs to be defeated.

By say wha?

Joe, since you are such a deep thinker, please explain how a relationship between two other people affects your marriage? Seems to me that most divorces are caused by adultery … just ask the former Mrs. Gingrich, Giuliani, etc …

Joe,

Is a class act a person who the DC establishment picks to run for a GA seat? Is a class act one who rubber stamps everything the White House tells him to? Is a class act one who supposedly is soooo smart on a committee that he gets passed over for? Or one whose beloved Farm Bill needs to be completely overhauled? What has Chambliss done on his own? Can he even write a bill by himself without using Isakson as a crutch?

Wow, the Democrats win one midterm election on no agenda and suddenly the Republicans are going to be in the minority for the foreseable future? Look the turnout was low in 2006 and the Democrats are messing up in Congress early on going way to far to the left. You know no more about what is going to happen in 2008 than i do. We will see in November 08 who controls this country. Now go drink your Kool-Aid

Earth to Gary… Earth to Gary.

Get your head out of the south and you will see areas trending more and more blue. It is early you are right but I think Republicans will be lucky if the only lose 3 more senate seats… say NH, CO, MN, OR or maybe ME???

What’s a nice, smart guy like Brewer gonna do with a cracker barrel of Georgia politics? Bless his heart. He must not know no better.

IF JIM MARSHALL RUNS FOR THE SENATE I COULD POSSIBLY SEE A LARRY WALKER, DUBOSE PORTER, ROBERT BROWN, OR EVEN ( IT’A A LONG SHOT ) SAM NUNN RUNNING TO REPLACE MARSHALL’S SEAT AS MODERATE OR CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRAT IN ‘08
