When there’s nothing to talk about, don’t
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The announcement that Rep. Charlie Norwood has returned home to receive hospice care and give up cancer treatments has created a delicate situation for those who might be interested in the seat. There won’t be much time to gear up a campaign in the event of Norwood’s death, but no one wants to appear to be rushing things.
In an interview with the Gainesville Times, Sen. Ralph Hudgens is obviously making the attempt to be sensitive to the transitional situation. But in this case, less might have have been better.
“My prayer for Charlie has been that he would get well and continue to serve and thereby keep me from having to make a decision (about running),” said Hudgens, R-Comer.
“When there is a vacancy, my intention is to run. But right now there is not a vacancy and there’s nothing to talk about.”

Hudgens is a JOKE! His comment shows that he is an opportunist and not a statesman. Charlie deserves more respect than what Ralph Hudgens is giving.

I thought Hudgens was scum before this. What a cold-hearted SOB.

In the unfortunate situation that Norwood be forced to leave office before his term is up, would the governor not appoint someone to fill that term? What provision of which constitution (U.S. or state) would that be in?

Drew, The gov only appoints someone to fill a senator’s unexpired seat (six year term). He calls for a special election to fill a representative’s unexpired seat (two year term). Its ironic that Charlie whipped Hudgens in his first campaign.

Thanks for the info. It seems like it would be the other way around, governor calls for a special election for a Senator and not Representative just due to the length of terms. But maybe I’m off in my way of thinking. I’ve never voted for Norwood, haven’t really agreed with him on much, but at the end of the day, you hate to see anyone in the condition that he is in. Hopefully he will get better. His service is appreciated.
