Blogwatch: Al Jazeera comes to Macon
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Amy Morton, who maintains the Georgia Women Vote blog, reported last night that an Al Jazeera news team is in Macon to interview Mayor Jack Ellis, who has become a Sunni Muslim and is in the process of changing his name to Hakim Mansour Ellis.
She’s got no details, but those may come later today.

So Christianity isn’t for everyone. Religious choice is very personal, and I suspect that the mayor’s personal search has been quite difficult. He should be congratulated for finding his connection to the divine and having the courage to declare it publically given the gross intollerance our society shows to anything associated with the Muslim religion.
People may question his political integrity in being non-christian, but if other elected officials are any example, he couldn’t be any worse than the ones who call themselves christian.
Look around at our laws and how our governments are organized. Every bill is paid for through theft from the citizens (taxes). Property taxes and even school taxes based on value, rather than on fair distribution of costs to everyone exemplify none other than covetousness (and of course theft). Murder is legal so long as you wear the government approved uniform (as is theft). Certainly there are more examples that I could come up with.
Congratulations Macon. Maybe now the example of a normal, caring Muslim in your community will help some of you realize that they hate us for our foreign policy, not for our freedoms.

It’ll be great to have a Muslim in some faculty of government. That way he’ll have a platform with which to decry the violent acts and atrocities committed by Muslims almost daily
He better act fast because no way on Hell, Hades or wherever Muslims to when they are bad, that he’ll be re-elected… regardless of his performance as Mayor

He is not eligible for re-election as he has already served two terms as Mayor. He will, however, continue to be besides Vernon Jones the most entertaining figure in Georgia Politics.

If you are counting on Mayor Ellis to improve the perception of the Islamic faith in Middle Georgia, don’t hold your breath. Sure, there are plenty of bigoted people in Georgia who are just upset because Mayor Ellis has become a Muslim, but, the reaction in Middle Georgia has far more to do with this Mayor’s track record in office. Let’s just say that he has not inspired a great deal of good will among citizens. He has a habit of landing in the spotlight for not-so-flattering reasons. Given the problems that have plagued his administration, I don’t think that he would be a great public relations person for any organization. But, I agree, he is entertaining.

Mayor Ellis will continue to embarass Macon Citizens even after his term ends this December. They say he wants to run against Congressman Jim Marshall in the next election. What a hoot.
