Pelosi’s intelligence problem: Is Sanford Bishop the solution?

House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi has decided against naming Alcee Hastings of Florida to the chairmanship of the powerful House intelligence committee. He’s been handicapped by the 1988 impeachment that drove him from a federal judgeship.

But neither will she name Jane Harman of California, the senior Democrat on the committee.

The Washington Post has named three alternatives.

First is Silvestre Reyes of Texas. Next comes Norm Dicks of Washington state. But third is “Sanford Bishop (D-Ga.), a conservative African American with Intelligence Committee experience.”

Trust me, the word “intelligence” and Sanford Bishop should NOT be used in the same sentence!!

Bishop has at least a good history or working with other members of the Georgia delegation (i.e. the Republican members from Georgia).

Most importantly, the Intelligence Committee should be more or less non-partisan. For example, I remember how California liberal Dem Jane Harmon and our own Georgia Conservative Republican Saxby Chambliss worked together on numerous occassions on intelligence issues post 9-11. Cong. Bishop could be a similar statesman in the same vein.

Most people seem to forget what committee Sanford Bishop currently serves on. He would be a fool to leave appropriations to chair the intelligence committee. Believe me…he knows that. Appropriations is the most sought after committee on the hill.
