Disabled kids, an accusation from one ex-governor, and a ‘no comment’ from a sitting one
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tip of the hat to Peach Pundit for this one: A video clip by CBS-46 reporter Wendy Saltzman, taking a look at Medicaid cuts to disabled children, is making Democratic rounds as a campaign talking point.
Expect Mark Taylor, the Democratic nominee for governor, to make use of it at Thursday’s fairground debate near Perry.
Former Gov. Roy Barnes and state Sen. David Adelman of Decatur, both Democrats, are featured in the Saltzman piece. Perdue refused to be interviewed. (See our Sept. 16 blog, “Signs that you have a 20-point lead in the polls).

Taking money away from disabled children and giving wealthy senior citizens a tax break is an example of reverse robbin hood. Now the poor & disabled are being robbed & the same time Perdue is trying to claim credit for increased tax revenue thanks to the higher gas taxes coming in. I am not surprised that Perdue is not talking about this compassionate conservative act. This is not his finest moment & CBS-46 did a great job on this story.

As a divorced mother of a daughter with cerebral palsy, it is disgusting that we give tax breaks to the wealthy while we take from children with disabilities. I have been waiting for services for over 4 years and it is difficult because I worked and went to school to better our life. Her father is retired military and they do not even cover very much for military dependents. Corporations try to fire you over you trying to care for your kids. Where is this country going and where is decency.

Since taking office Sonny has cut public school education by 1 billion dollars and provided 1 billion dollars in tax cuts to corporate interest(which has not produced a net job gain). One of his re-election ads promises to untax retirement income for seniors. Upon doing the math you will discover that his plan will benefit only those in the higher retirement income bracket. Sonny’s policies clearly favor the big shots. Had enough? Vote for a change!

I have been trying to get Perdue’s admin to address this issue for 2+ years. Apparently in Sonnyland, there is no such thing as children w/ disabilities and grandparents wouldn’t have to put all their savings into saving their grandchildren’s lives.

The Governor’s election ads boast a surplus in the State Treasury. These ads fail to point out that this surplus was achieved at the expense of benefits to our disabled children. Shame, shame!

Georgia’s current Governor runs election ads saying that he is a Foster Parent. How can he be a Foster Parent and NOT take action to restore benefits to our developmentally disabled children? These children too often end up in Foster Care because their families do not have the resources to care for them. He must only accept children from the Foster Care System who have no developmental disabilities. Had he ever cared for such a child, he would surely have more compassion for them and their families.

Governor Purdue seems to have given little consideration to how changes in Medicaid would affect other programs serving children in Georgia .The changes he has made have seriously threatened early intervention services from Babies Can’t Wait. While cutting Medicaid may have saved $$$, those costs shifted to Babies Can’t Wait..
There is a growing fear that BCW will be unable to comply with Part C/IDEA and that Georgia will lose IDEA Part C Federal Funding. Without federal funding, EARLY INTERVENTION WILL CEASE TO EXIST IN GEORGIA.
SONNY NEEDS TO FIX THIS! IF HE DOESN’T, THEN GEORGIA NEEDS TO FIX IT ON ELECTION DAY!!!!!!!!!

As a retired senior, my resources from SS benefits and retirement are adequate for my needs — though I am not in the upper echelons of income. However, I do not need special tax breaks, etc., for my own needs (AND FOR SONNY’S POLITICAL GAIN). I need for my disabled grandchild’S BENEFITS (paid from our years of taxes) to be given priority over special perks for upper income seniors.

Perhaps we should give up on a person who will not respond and get to work on securing sincere and certified promises from Mark Taylor that he would/will provide correct care to the helpless little ones who are in need??

By Private Fund? Where?

During a report by WXIA-TV Atlanta NBC Channel 11 on October 18, 2006 regarding the Medicaid issue, a spokesman for the Governor claims that his administration has placed $7.6 million in a private fund for these children. This is the first the families of these children have heard of such a fund. Where is the fund and how do the families get access to it?
