It’s all about the sheriffs

Over at Hotline on Call there’s an interesting analysis of party politics in Georgia and Arkansas. It makes an argument that a lot of old-timers would say amen to: That sheriff’s races, or in this case sheriffs’ endorsements, are the truest measure of where party politics is at the grassroots level.

There’s also a list of the 15 best down-ticket races in the country. We’d argue about Georgia: our choice would have been the ag commissioner’s race between Tommy Irvin, the state’s longest-serving Democrat, and a well-funded Republican opponent, Gary Black. But that’s what fun about lists.

Gotta role with Irvin in the GA Comm of Ag race. I just can’t vote for career lobbyist Black. Besides, Black’s lobby organization is a good preview of the corporate interest who’ll pull his strings. Irvin’s got a proven record of standing up for consumers, why would we ever change that?

The Ag Commissioner race is the best of all of them. Gary Black has never been on a ballot prior to 2006 and because of his great reputation and respect among the ag industry he defeated two former republican nominees for this job and a sitting state senator. Gary Black will win in November the same way he won the republican nomination - ideas and respect. Irvin ran out of ideas years ago and respect for him has been fading for a long time. Congratulations to Gary Black for running a positive campaign about what he will do as Agriculture Commissioner. Georgia is fortunate to have him!

Tommy Irvin has served as long as he has because he’s been an upstanding individual respected by both Democrats and Republicans.

There is a vocal and well-funded minority of Republicans who want Gary Black, their corporate-backed candidate to get into office to strip consumer protections regarding food products, as well as reducing enforcement of laws barring illegal aliens from working low-paying farm and food processing jobs.
