The election in DeKrossover County
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Save only for the 2002 Denise Majette-Cynthia McKinney race, we’ve heard more about the impact of crossover voting after Tuesday’s primary than ever before. And once again, it’s DeKalb County where voters seem to have had the strongest urge to pick up the other party’s ballot.
If gays and lesbians in DeKalb who usually vote for Rep. Cynthia McKinney hadn’t defected to vote against Ralph Reed in the Republican lieutenant governor’s race, one of our readers writes, they might have kept her out of a runoff with Hank Johnson.
McKinney got a double crossover whammy, in fact, because at least some Republicans crossed over to vote against her, and with this low a turnout, that could have affected some GOP primary races.
Cathy Cox’s supporters believe she lost a lot of votes to Democrats crossing over to – as one of them put it Wednesday – “drive a stake through Ralph’s heart. But the same voter said she’d also decided she would have voted for Taylor.
Note, in all this, the utter absence of political guile. Is it all that whole-grain bread?

I live in the 4th District and I would cross over a bed of hot nails and hungry rattlesnakes to make sure Cynthia McKinney is sent packing.

Whole-grain bread is much better for you than white bread. Its fiber content helps clear the pipes, and is especially recommended for the white-bread voters who tend to be full of poo. Let’s hope that the trend of healthy cleansing continues here in Georgia, and around the country, so our system can return to the balance and ability to FUNCTION we seem to have lost. Can I get an AMEN?

I have never seen more conjecture in political reporting as I have seen in the AJC lately. Three people say they crossed over and Tom Baxter and Jim Galloway see undeniable evidence. Galloway wrote about a 40 inch story in today’s paper based on one or two people saying that the Religious Right stayed away from the polls Tuesday. If the Right were so ticked at Ralph Reed, wouldn’t they go vote AGAINST him? No, that is only something gay people do. Which brings me to this: How do all this heterosexuals know what gay people are doing in the first place? Hmmmm.

Reality Check: just because you think that crossover votes killed or supported a particular candidate doesn’t mean it actually happened. Even in Majette-McKinney in ‘02, the crossover vote wasn’t what got McKinney anyway, it was poor performance in her traditional “home base”, not Republicans in Dunwoody/Gwinnett.
Soon enough, we’ll get the voting pattern maps and be able to know for certain about cross-over voting patterns. Until then: your candidate won/lost/tied and we’ll still get annoying political messages during dinner.

Oh, yes, and Ralph can now go back to safely swindling gullible Christian drones out of their money for causes he’ll misrepresent to them. The dance of political life continues.

Rest assured, there was A LOT of crossover voting on Tuesday and it was primarily Democrats crossing over and voting against Reed. I do think McKinney was a target as well (and rightfully so) but I think there were leaps and bounds more people voting against Reed’s hypocritical ethics and extreme, activist Christian Coalition views. Just read the numerous posts on this website relating to other voting topics and you’ll see just how large a number there were. As for me, I’m a conservative Democrat and also gay and I voted Republican on Tuesday to stop Reed. He’s one of the biggest threats to Georgia government that I’ve seen in a very long time. I can also say that I have not seen such a strong and concerted effort on the part of the gay community to rally against any one candidate in a very long time too. Beleive it or not, there is a huge gay community in Atlanta but the sad part is that few realize how much political clout they could muster if we all were truly organized and politically active. Maybe this will help rally the troups for November. I guess the good news about crossing over on Tuesday is that I can now cast my vote AGAINST Stephens in the run off. He’s another radical activist Christian Coalition type that needs to go.

Amen to that, Mike. And, don’t forget that Bill Stephens was a co-author of SR595. He’s such a staunch supporter of traditional marriage that his first wife divorced him after rumors of adultery. To vote him out will be very gratifying.

If your church starts dictating how you run your life, you might be a brainwashed CHRISTIAN! Ever notice that these self proclaimed christians are the worst offenders-Pat Swindall-I AM A CHRISTIAN! And then he is guilty of Swindeling or something-then it is Reed and Stephens. I don’t hear anyone proclaiming-I AM A JEW or I am a Catholic! Who gives a damn!? Proclaiming to be a christian means to me that you cannot be trusted because you feel you are forgiven every Sunday for doing evil during the week. I wil not vote for ANY self proclaimed christians based on prior track records. Now is the time to get rid of McKinney-get her out of politics-to whoever wins-take this advice: Keep running for the same seat. Majette could have still been a Female, Black, Congresswoman had she not run against Johnny Isakson. The woman was STUPID! She got the nomination because she was running against McKinney. ONLY reason she won. Let’s put McKinney out of GA politics forever so that the only district she can run in will be Zimbabwe where there are little to no White People and she can run against Mr. Mugabe and Mr. Amin.

i reject the notion that gays and lesbians would have voted for cynthia mckinney. to the extent that the gay vote voted in the gop primary or stayed home, it helped mckinney. and those that did not vote would still be eligible to vote in her run-off primary.

I think lots of people crossed over, but I only have an informal poll among co-workers as my proof. I’m in a N. GA county and I’m not sure what data to look at to prove it one way or the other.

It was ME! And a lot of other folks in the 4th District that went to the polls to cast a vote against Cynthia in the primaries and will cast a vote against her in a run-off…and vote against her AGAIN in the general election.
If Hank wins, I’m hoping he’ll stay in his seat and not let McKinney back in again.

If all these people crossed over to vote against Reed then it makes the Republican turnout look even more pathetic. I guess negative campaigning works. People stay home.
It agree with others that Cagle is in deep trouble. There are lots of folks who supported Reed who will not come out to vote for him. I think he hurts Perdue more than Reed would have at this point.
And the negative Taylor-Perdue race will probably make the Cagle-Reed race look tame.
I think Cagle and Perdue are in more trouble than they think. I plan to sit out this election and could never vote for Cagle.

By all means….sit it out. Then when the liberals take over we can blame the cry babies. I swear I’m living in 2000 FL here. If there were paper ballots, we’d hear election lawsuits and contesting of the results.
Stay home. Cry. Whine. Do whatever. Funny how the “Christian Reed Supporters” are sounding more like far left Gore/Lieberman 2000 supporters. Not too Christian if you ask me. Too hateful and angry to be Christians….sound more like militant Taliban types.

Oh I’m not hateful even though I sounded like it to bloggers when Ralph lost. I just want the best Christian to win even if they are a Democrat or Republican—because both can be Godless—oh how I hate that I read that venom invective by Ann Coulter encoraging me to condemn those who voted against Ralph as “Godless”. I got carried away in the read—please forgive me as God has forgiven me. I love everybody—and that kind taxi driver wnereever you are please read this and let me give you a big hug for not driving me to hug Ralph at the Intercontinental Tuesday nite. My son tells me he took the keys because he knew what was going to happen and I have to prove myself to go party at Georgia Homecoming in the frat house.
