A somber note from a campaign

Jim Martin, one of five Democratic candidates for governor, is closing his campaign with the emotional grabber of the season. It’s a 30-second TV spot in which he recounts the 1980 kidnapping of his 8-year-old daughter, Becky.

She was walking the two blocks home from Morningside Elementary School in Atlanta, when a man pulled up to her and asked her for directions. The man grabbed her and drove off — but threw her out of the car shortly afterwards.

“I’ll never forget the way she trembled when she faced her kidnapper in court. That’s one reason I fought so hard for crime victims, and to lock up violent criminals,” Martin says to the camera.

GREAT AD! I liked it. It shows Jim Martin to be sincere, understanding, and take actions kind of guy. Is he the only candidate keeping it positive? Hecht sure isn’t.

Wonderful Ad- thanks for keeping it positive in this negative political climate. Too bad others don’t follow Martin’s lead.

AMEN! A politican with a heart, soul, and a brain. Wish the other candidates had half of what Jim Martin ( and his wonderful campaign) has done! Positive is so much better than that crap going around by Hecht.

Out of sight! Thanks for showing politics that you stand on the moral, ethical, and spiritual high ground. That is exactly what we DEMS need to have to beat Ralphie boy Reed

First he had polio over 50 years ago. Now is poor little girl was kidnapped for all of 15 minutes way back in 1980. Give me a break. This guy is scraping the bottom of the barrel and searching for things to drum up some sympathy and compassion for his ailing campaign. Why won’t he talk about TOPICAL and CURRENT issues that voters actually care about. Why does he keep dredging up tired stories from antiquity to bolster is approval? Sorry and sad. This guy would have no chance in a battle against either of the two Republicans. At least Hecht and Terrell have the gumption to state what is on their minds.

The ad you are referring to says that Jim Martin has always stood for victims and fought to protect us from criminals. Jim Martin is a criminal defense lawyer by trade, he has fought to put criminals back on the street and got paid to do it. I find it amusing that people are outraged at Greg Hecht’s mail that while it may have a shock value is true and completely footnoted but no one is outraged that a guy who has defended vicious criminals will get on a TV ad and say that he has always put victims first and fought to protect us from criminals — talk about the height of hypocrisy!

Lets all applaud for Jim he is keeping it positive while lying to us with a smile on his face — I for one am not buying it!

I will finish by asking how can the Martin campaign complain that Greg Hecht is trying to benefit from the deaths of children at DFACS (while ignoring that children did die that the agency Jim ran was charged with protecting them) and then use an event that happened with his daughter 30 years ago for political gain - she was a child at the time too - correct?

I have yet to see any serious positions or statements from the Martin campaign about the things that matter to everyday Georgian’s maybe that is because he doesn’t have much to say?

Jim Martin is proving that he has personal experience with the issues of debilitating diseases and community crime. Greg Hecht is grasping at straws when he slings this mud. His campaign HAD been centered on Greg trying to throw out as many policy initiatives as he could to make him sound like he was smart and important. In fact, he just sounded like a kid trying to get a seat at the grown ups’ table. Jim Martin’s ads and he statesmanship reflect qualities I think many Georgians miss in their leaders. His progressive voting record never conflicted with his willingness to work with members of both parties.

Greg Hecht should be ashamed of his campaign.

I think it is very interesting that the AJC has commented not only once, but twice on Mr. Martin’s commercials and never, to my knowledge, on any of the commercials of any other candidate. It is also interesting that you comment on Mr. Martin’s commercial about crime and you have never commented on Mr. Hecht’s commercial vowing to get tough on child molesters, a commerical that he has been running for 5 weeks. Mr. Hecht proposes a specific solution to a specific problem. Mr. Martin just says he’ll protect victims’ rights in some general amorphous way. And do you at the AJC ever judge the credibility of these commericials? Mr. Martin, a criminal defense attorney, suddenly seems concerned with victims’ rights, contrary to his entire professional career and immediately prior to an election. Hmmmm. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Actually Hecht flat out lied, mislead, and misquoted Jim Martin. The way Hecht’s team is playing-this nasty ad has already backfired! Blogs are 90 to 10 for Jim Martin and shaming Greg’s tasteless lies.

Truth is Georgia is better off today with Jim Martin. He is truthful and honest, and gets the job done. The nasty ad’s Hecht sent show how really REPUBLICAN Hecht is (or at least like Ralph Reed-dirty politics). We want a Real DEMOCRAT not another one in sheep’s clothing.

I’m a liberal republican that will be voting for Jim Martin. I know both Hecht and Martin. I don’t agree with either on many issues. But Martin has character and treats others with respect. Hecht is a nice guy, but his campaign strategy comes off as short man syndrome.

I think Martin’s humbleness will allow him to defeat the republican nominee.

Also, being a criminal defense lawyer and tough on crime is not hypocritical. Defense lawyers assure due process is followed. Martin was chairman of the senate judiciary committee and his actions in that position support his statements in his ads. To suggest otherwise is to engage in advertising and rhetoric more akin to the Reed/Cagle race than intelligent discussion.
